AWKWARD FLIRTING
I look up to find the owner of the arm and am startled to see mr. Styles. I try to move, but instead his arm tightens.
He doesn't acknowledge me though, he's looking at Roan and striking up a conversation. I nearly swoon at hearing his voice again.
"Aww mate, let her live a little."
He has an accent. I haven't noticed this before. I can't immediately place it, so I frown, trying to focus on the sounds until I realize, he's from the UK!
Roan is looking at mr. Styles' arm around my waist, but he doesn't say anything. I wonder why, but I decide to let him out of his mysery by requesting mr. Styles to remove his arm myself, even though I don't really want him to let go of me.
"Uhm, mr. Styles?" Darnit, I sound so awkward. "Could you maybe, uhm, let go."
I don't even dare look up at him, frightful at what I might find.
"Buttercup, you can call me Harry."
He squeezes his hand slightly, but lets go of me a few seconds later.
"I shouldn't." I answer, finally looking up at him. He's so tall!
"I insist." His tone is final and I don't dare refuse him any more.
"Okay," I relent, not wanting to make a scene or draw any attention to myself. I take another sip of the champagne to calm my nerves.
"Well sweetheart, I still have to mingle a little bit, but I'll see you soon."
Okay? I want to reply, not sure where this is coming from all of a sudden, but all my thoughts are interrupted when I feel his lips brushing my cheek slightly, but very deliberately. What, the actual f - never mind.
He leaves me standing then, but not until he sends me one of his signature winks, or at least they're familiar to me. Over the years I've seen him do them at me quite often, but this time, the butterflies in my stomach are ten times magnified.
I swear to god, it's as though my legs are turning into jelly or something and I can't help but squeal until I realize how much of a fool I'm making of myself. I quickly cover my mouth with my hands, looking around to see if anyone has noticed and I swear I see mr. Sty - Harry's mouth twitch a little as if he's trying to contain laughter. Shi - ps.
I look at Roan who's scowling at me and mumbling something under his breath that sounds a lot like 'shouldn't have brought you here'. This results in me scowling at him and quickly downing the entire glass of champagne to spite him. The sparkly gold liquid tickles my throat as I swallow it and I giggle. It's my first glass of alcohol ever. I've never had the opportunity to drink before nor has it ever sounded appealing, but tonight I'm feeling adventurous.
Roan's frown deepens.
"Rose." he says, distaste clear in his voice.
"Roan." I answer playfully, with a giggle.
"You shouldn't have done that."
"I know, but I already did! So too late to change anything about it!"
"You're such a child, I knew I should have left you at home."
I open my mouth, but shut it again, his words hurt too much. I take a step back, swaying a little on my heels and turn my back towards him, I feel like the whole room has just witnessed our squabble and I feel utterly embarrassed.
"Rose."
He says with an apologetic tone, as I start putting distance between us.
"I know I'm embarrassing and you're ashamed of me, but just please, give me a few minutes." I interrupt, without looking at him.
I walk away further, unsure of where to go. I don't know anybody here and I'm too socially awkward to engage in conversation. I decide to just head over to one of the little lounge areas and observe the party. That's what I'm good at, blending into the surroundings and staying invisible.
As I watch everyone in their beautiful evening wear, I start to feel more and more out of place. The women are so elegant, but still they manage to look ruthless. The men look pristine in their suits, although some look uncomfortable, reaching up to their collars from time to time as if there's an itch. I start to look closer, after noticing this, trying to find details about their behavior, while my mind swirls out of control with possibilities. Suddenly, I don't mind being invisible any more, I am finally starting to see the benefits.
"Hey."
A menacing voice whispers near my ear, sending goosebumps all over my spine. I immediately know who the voice belonged to, although I haven't had the pleasure of hearing it that often. I close my eyes briefly, trying not to look startled, even though my heart is trying to beat out of my chest.
I turn my head slightly, finding Harry's face incredibly close to mine. Startled, I scoot back a little, but bump into Harry's arm, which he has apparently placed around me.
"Woah there cutie, where'ya going?"
"Just, no-where, I mean, I was, .."
God, I just can't help embarrass myself, can I? I cover my face with my hands to shield myself from his burning gaze.
He chuckles, so I peek through my fingers to see what's so funny, but find him still looking at me. Great, now he's laughing at me. He raises his hands towards my face and pulls my hands away from it.
"A girl as pretty as you, should never hide her face."
I blink, once, twice, a couple more times. What?
This man keeps throwing me curveballs and I'm the most unathletic girl in the world.
Harry proceeds to pushing a lock of hair back behind my ear and I'm nearly swooning because of the electrified feeling of his fingertips brushing against my ear lobe.
"Dance with me?"
He doesn't wait for a reply but pulls me up from the lounges, leaving no other option than to follow. Not that I don't want to follow him, but from what I've heard about him, you don't say no to Harry anyway.
When he's content with a spot, smack in the middle of the room, when barely any people are even dancing, he wraps his arm around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest. I gently place my hands on his chest, feeling the soft defined muscles underneath my fingertips. He starts swaying us around and I can't help but notice how we've got nearly everyone looking at us. It makes me want to crawl back to my corner and be invisible again.
When Harry notices, he gently grabs my chin and turns my face towards his.
"Don't look at them. To me, you're the most beautiful girl in the room."
It's a good thing Harry's holding me up in his arm, or I would have been a mess of limbs on the floor by now. The effect he has on me..
So I keep my gaze locked with his and find the rest of the room disappearing.
"You know, you've always interested me, but Roan keeps such a close eye on you, I've never managed to get some alone time with you."
Again, what?
New York's most notorious playboy, has had his eyes on me all along? I'm just a school girl.
But this is what I've wanted for so long, for him to notice me and here we are, dancing the night away.
I'll cherish this moment forever.
My thoughts nearly make me miss how Harry's gently leaning in, but I close my eyes just in time for his lips to meet mine in that perfect Hollywood movie, world-shattering, embrace, but -
I'm yanked away from the warm embrace and find myself staring into Roan's raging eyes. Around me, people are laughing and when I look to find Harry, he has already disappeared from the scene.
What happened?
My bottom lip starts trembling as I begin to realize how much I've been played and Roan's eyes soften, pulling me through the crowd with his arm around my waist, back to the car.
My cinderella night didn't end with me losing my glass slipper, it ended in heartbreak.
