Sound the Bugle

Rain's POV

we laid beside Silent that night. And I think it's safe to say that both myself and Spirit were praying that somehow she would be alright.

We managed to move her without hurting her... much. she was now lying on her left side curled up close to Spirit, and I was in front of her, nuzzling her head now and again whenever she started to get scared. The mustang looked as if he was nailed to her side with his head draped over her to shelter and keep her warm despite us all soaking wet.

I couldn't understand how her husband could be so cruel when she had been a kind soul. I would never understand how a lover could shoot his partner in the back without hesitation. She saved my life and Little Creek's, but now she's... no, she will live.

Silent spoke of a woman named Rhaella, her mother, and how she died when she was six years old, which was relatively young for two legs. "she was a kind woman," Silent would say, "who loved all animals. and me." I genuinely wish that her mother was still alive. If she were Silent would've never been mute. Of course, she probably would never have come to us, but that would be fine as long as she was welEarly the following day when I suddenly started to hear terrifying sounds—the sounds of the two legs that destroyed Little Creek's house and killed many of his people.

"Spirit... Spirit!" I whispered, trying not to wake Silent, "they're coming. I can hear them!" he almost immediately jumped awake and looked to hold Silent a bit tighter with more tears welling up in his eyes. she was calm, and her breathing was too, but it was raggedy. I felt Silent start to sir from the noise of the cruel two legs as I heard them get closer. I turned to her and nuzzled her head again, gently trying to keep her warm. she feard those two legs just as much as any of Little Creek's people did... and just as much as I did.'

"Hey! there's a couple of horses over there!" I heard one of them shout before seeing a group coming over. Silent was starting to wake up.

"Spirit, act like you're hurt!" I told him, but he didnt listens. His only concern was Silent. she looked at me for a moment with a terrified desperate look in her eyes which were already dull with exhaustion and weakness. Then she turned to Spirit as he held her closer. But when she spoke, her voice was quiet and raspy, feeble. "S-Spirit... please.." was all she said before I felt something warp around my neck. I gaged and was dragged onto my hooves and away from her.

Suddenly Spirit was also dragged to his hooves and away from Silent. Again, it was the pale two legs, but her husband wasn't with them. They saw Silent laying there wounded and bleeding, her blood staining the ground in multiple places, but none of them seemed to care. "ain't that the Colonel's wife?" one of them, the one who had me, asked. Hope was lifted in me slightly, thinking they just didnt know it was her.

I turned my head aorund to look at them all, praying to see a good reaction to the one's question but no such thing happened...

Third Person POV (back with Silent)

she felt so weak. She was now freezing without Spirit at her side. And she was scared without Rain's gentle whispers and soft nuzzles to keep her calm.

"oh, Silent.." a familiar voice caught her ears before someone picked her up and set her on their lap. It was human, no doubt in her mind. And suddenly, the realization hit her like a trunk, and she knew it was Little Creek. Then another voice came. "Creek!" it was a female's voice "you found her?! is she okay? Is she... oh no.."

Pocahontas.

"come on, Silent, open your eyes," said the princess in a soft, sad voice. Somehow the white-haired woman found enough strength to push her eyelids open. Pocahontas gasped in relief just as Little Creek smiled in comfort. "okay, okay,.. you're going to be okay," the princess assured her, sounding sincere "Innoko would fix you up. She will," Little Creek spoke up "let's get her to Innoko. Time's running short" Silent saw Pocahontas nod to her cousin before the native American woman picked Silent up in bridal style by herself and held her securely but carefully not to hurt her.

"you saved my life.." Silent heard Little Creek whisper, but she wasn't sure if he meant her or something else.

Silent let her head fall back, allowing her eyes to close. Pocahontas sighed, but didnt say anything. as long as Silent was still breathing, she was okay. And she didnt want to take the bullet out. It was the barrier that kept most of Silent's blood in her body. "do you think Innoko will be able to heal her?" she lost most of her things in the attack," Little Creek said as he ran up to his cousin's side.

Pocahontas nodded in response "she always makes the best of everything," the native woman said. "Silent fought her, so we should too" Little Creek nodded to his cousin before they began the trek back to their village. The white men had destroyed almost everything they had out of the cruelty in their hearts.

Most of the villagers knew Silent and knew how kind she was. So most of them were still trying to figure out how such a lovely sweet woman could've married such a cruel, heartless spawn of the race of men.

Rain's POV (back to the horses)

tiny snowflakes were starting to fall from the grey cloudy sky.

The two legs had led Spirit and me to a big mental thing. I hhtink I've heard Little Creek call it a 'train' before. I knew many other horses were being loaded into the big thing and mere horses from my village. Three home them were Brown Eyes, Mistracer, and Bigred, three young stallions who were born on the same hour of the same day of the same month of the same year.

They were best friends... they should never have to deal with all this trouble.

"come on, girl," a different two leg gently patted my back as he pushed me into a compartment of the train with three other horses who happened to be Mistracer, Bigred, and Browneyes. Spirit came in soon after me looking tired and broken-hearted. I sighed and joined his side, trying to ignore the hopeful gazes of the young stallions with us.

"you blame yourself, dont you?" I asked. Spirit didnt answer right away, but he sighed and forced himself to answer me "it is my fault," he said, "if I were with her... if I hadn't left her... s-she wouldn't be..." he trailed off as his voice started to break. I hung my head slightly, sighing. "Spirit, it wasn't your fault. You know she would say the same thing too if she was here," he swung his head up, "but she isn't here! She's dying o-or dead!"'

I stepped back at the sudden outburst but then calmed myself. I was worried for Silent, too, and I couldn't believe she was... dead. But I guess Spirit could only assume the worst he loved her. "you can't lose hope so easily!" I exclaimed, laying my ears back "she wouldn't have given up on you; I know that much! she believed in you, so now you have to believe in her!" I was angry at the stallion for giving up on Silent so quickly.

He just huffed and turned away from me, letting his head hang and sulking. I rolled my eyes and went over to Bigred, Browneyes, and Mistracer, but they kept their mouths shut.

this would be a long, long ride.
