9 - The Casket Girls

Davina, Josh and I were at Cami's apartment

I was still siphoning the compulsion from Cami's mind.

Cami laid on the floor, screaming in agony

Josh and Davina stood next to each other, a few feet away, watching worriedly.

"Oh, God, it hurts!" Cami told us

Davina knelt in front of Cami, apologetically "I'm sorry, Cami. It's the less hurtful way to break Klaus' compulsion. If I were to do it, my magic would hurt you even more"

"Believe me, I know what's it's like" Josh told her "You're okay. And, hey, all these notes that you made? It's very momento of you. Nice work"

"We've been at this all night" Cami told us "I don't understand what's happening to me, I don't understand any of this-"

"But you will" I told her "I will unlock every stolen memory, undo every piece of mind control that any vampire has ever done to you. When I'm done, you will understand all of it, and you'll be free. I can stop if you want me to"

"No, don't stop" Cami told me "I want to remember everything"

I nodded in understanding

~8~

I was still working on the siphoning.

Cami screamed

I knelt in front of her, allowing her a moment to breathe "I can feel a break through the compulsion. It's slowly fading"

Davina knelt next to me, in front of Cami "You should start to feel, like, a weight lifting"

"And your cheat sheets are about to make a lot more sense" Josh told her

The sunlight streaming through the window burned Josh's hand. He winced in pain, quickly jerking his hand back

Davina looked at him guiltily "I promise, as soon as the world stops hunting me and my siphoner best friend, I will find the daylight ring spell"

"I know, just... don't worry about that right now" Josh replied.

I picked up a photo, holding it up for Cami to see "Do you remembered why you wrote this?"

Cami nodded, "I found a picture of Klaus and Marcel from 1919. Klaus compelled me to go out with Marcel, to spy on him. That's what he said yesterday, before he told me to forget. I'm remembering"

I scowled "Klaus, what a dick" Davina and Josh nodded in agreement "Let's take you back more"

Cami nodded

I placed my hands in Cami's temple gently, giving her a reassuring look as I began the siphoning again, my hands starting to faintly glow red.

Cami's nose suddenly started to bleed, breathing heavily as she trashed in my grip for a few seconds before starting to relax, looking around.

I dropped my not longer glowing hands, looking up at Davina and Josh nodding

~8~

Cami was finally free from compulsion, and now we just had to make sure her mind was no longer 'compulsion allowed'

Davina poured water into a glass, setting it on the kitchen table in front of Cami. "Keep drinking. You need the vervain in your system so you can't be compelled again"

"Hey Cami, you don't have any like... human blood in your fridge, do you?" Josh asked

Davina and I exchanged a frustrated look.

"For crying out loud" I told him, offering him my wrist "Here"

Josh hesitated for a moment before taking a hold of my wrist, transforming, bitting my hand.

I winced slightly at the pain

Davina was watching us before blinking, starting to look dazed, staring off

Cami stood, concerned "Davina?"

"I know what's going on" I told them. Josh let go of my hand. I focused the stolen magic from the compulsion to heal my bleeding wrist, smiling in satisfaction, turning to face them once it was healed. "Someone's practicing magic"

Davina blinked, returning to us, nodding nervously "They're trying to find me and Beth"

Cami looked worried and scared, "Then we have to run"

Cami rushed to her room, returning back after a few minutes with belongings underneath her arm, shoving them into a bag

"There is no way to sneak us out of the Quarter" I told them, nervously "By now, everyone's looking for us. The witches, Marcel, Klaus"

"My uncle will know what to do" Cami told us

Davina sighed, "Cami-"

"I mean, he has to know some of what's going on in this town, right?" Cami asked

Davina looked at her guiltily "Cami, stop-"

"Unless he's been compelled" Cami told us

"He knows" I told her bluntly

Cami stopped, looking at me in confusion "What are you talking about?"

"He knows" I repeated, softly this time "He works with Marcel. They're practically friends. I hear them talk. He knows everything"

Cami was shocked, looking between me and Davina.

Davina nodded sadly.

I sighed sympathetically.

Cami shook her head in denial, "No. He would've told me if he knew the witches put a hex on my brother" Davina nor I answered, looking at each other, turning to Josh. Josh remained silent as well. "He knows?"

"Cami-" I started

"Oh, my God" Cami told us "He knows"

Cami sat down.

Davina walked over to her to comfort her.

I watched them sadly.

Josh looked from me to Davina, urgently "Hey, you guys seriously need to go, like, now. Plane, train, automobile, whatever. Take my car, it's parked down at the docks. I'll text you the where"

"Put your number in Cami's phone" Davina told him, walking closer to us, overwhelmed and frustrated "Most of the Quarter is shut down right now, we'll have to walk. And the sun is taking forever to go down"

"Hey, no tears" Josh told us, wrapping an arm around us, comfortingly

We pulled back

"Promise you'll met us as soon as it gets dark out?" I asked

"Yeah, don't worry about me" Josh reassured "Just don't let them find you"

I smiled, nodding

Davina looked at me nervously.

I returned the nervous look, smiling reassuringly

Davina took my hand, squeezing reassuringly

We were in this together.

~8~

Davina and I infiltrated at the Casket Girls festival, wearing masquerade masks. We walked hurriedly among the full swing festival, walking through the street with Cami in tow.

"There's people everywhere" Davina told us nervously

"Just keep walking" Cami told us "No one knows its you"

I stared ahead, stopping worriedly "Cami...."

They followed my gaze, seeing Klaus searching for us nearby.

Cami looked at us in slight panic "We have to get off this street"

Davina and I linked our hands, following Cami as she quickly walked down a side street.

~8~

Davina, Cami and I sneaked inside St. Anne's church to hide from our search party lead by Klaus

"We should keep moving" I told them "How long do we have to wait?"

"Give it a few minutes, then I'll check to see if the coast is clear" Cami answered. Her phone vibrated, picking it, answering it "Josh, sorry I missed your calls" She paused for a moment "What?"

Cami put the phone in speakers, listening to Josh, glancing at us worriedly

"Look, I didn't want to tell you, but I know Klaus" Josh told us "If Davina and Beth don't show up, he'll kill Tim and Lucas"

Cami looked at us worriedly "We'll think of something. Make your way to the Quarter. Stay hidden. We'll text you when we have a plan"

They hung up.

I bit my thumbnail, anxiously

Davina started pacing frantically "We have to go"

I nodded, worriedly.

Davina and I made our way toward the entrance.

Cami stood in front of us, blocking our path, "Girls, wait"

"We can't let them die" I told her

Davina suddenly grabbed my arm, gasping. The sudden contact made me connect with her magic, sensing the same she did every time she sensed magic. It wasn't a very pleasant feeling.

"What's wrong?" Cami asked

I shrugged off Davina's arm, immediately looking for her to see if I had hurt her.

"The witches" Davina answered, seeming not hurt at all. I looked at her wide eyed. Davina grasped my arms, reassuringly "You connected with me only. You didn't siphon me at all, Beth"

I sighed in relief, though it didn't last long.

Suddenly, the front doors of the church bursted open and three witches, -dressed all in black- led by another witch named Sabine, stormed into the church, chanting the incantation to a spell as the walked closer to us, "Gadyen nan balans. Gadyen nan la foi. Se pou nou fe sa yo dwe fe"

I could feel the power of the spell, sensing it being so powerful. The witches threw Cami backward across the church, knocking her out

Davina and I locked hands, furiously "No!"

I threw a hand in front of me, using the stored magic inside my locket and carefully using Davina's unstable magic against the witches. The church's foundation began to shake. Davina threw a hand up, realizing thanks to me she wouldn't get out of control, levitating the witches high into the air. Sabine looked down at the two of us in fear as we violently flickered our free wrists, snapping the necks of all three of the witches. As soon as we dropped them to the ground, we unlinked hands, rushing over to Cami, kneeling in front of her

"Cami?" Davina asked

I shook her shoulder gently, "Cam?"

Cami remained unconscious

Davina looked at me in anger, "We can't let them get away with it, Beth"

"No, we can't" I agreed, just as angry

We stood, stomping out of the church, furious and ready to face those witches and everyone in our way.

~8~

Davina and I hurried through the still-full streets of the Quarter when Josh suddenly pulled us into an alley

"Hey, it's just me" Josh told us, holding up his hands innocently "Don't, like, melt me"

I relaxed, closing my eyes "What are you doing? You're supposed to be hidden"

"Yeah" Josh agreed "So are you, remember? But you two are kind of working that whole 'girls on a mission' look that makes me nervous" Davina and I exchanged a look. Josh sighed "Are you sure that you really want to mess with, like, the baddest dude in all of history?"

"He messed with us when he took Tim and Lucas" Davina told him "I'll kill him, all of them"

I passed a hand through my hair, anxiously "You forget about one little detail, Dav. We haven't found a way to kill them"

"I have so much power inside of me Beth" Davina told me, "You more than anyone knows about this. I can find a way. This power is growing, gathering inside me. I haven't felt anything like this before. I'm strong. But I need you to stabilize me, B. I can't do it without you"

I looked into her determined eyes, considering. Even if I was nervous, I wasn't letting down my friend. I was willing to help her after all we went through. I nodded, seriously "You can count on me, then. You're my best friend"

Davina smiled a small smile

If you kill them, then--" Josh trailed off, sighing

We looked at him curiously

"What?" Davina asked

Josh sighed "If you're gonna do it, don't hold back. You hit them with all you got"

We smiled

I pulled him into a hug, startling him but hugged me tightly. I pulled away, "Be careful, J"

Josh smiled slightly

Davina and I walked away, leaving, a mission in mind

~8~

We returned to the Compound, walking inside the courtyard, listening to Tim playing.

Marcel, Elijah and Klaus were talking. Lucas was nowhere to be seen which made me more nervous

"When Davina and Beth get in here, you two need to let me do the talking" we heard Marcel tell them

Klaus looked up, as if sensing our presence "Well, I'm sure you'll have your chance" He turned to us "Hello, loves"  He looked up, "Silence is golden, Timothy" The upbeat music played suddenly stopped. "Thank you"

"Davina?" Davina and I heard Tim's confused voice, following the noise, seeing him sitting in a beam on the roof with his violin.

"Where's Lucas?" I demanded, looking at Klaus, Marcel and Elijah.

Klaus smiled, "Lucas"

"Eli" Lucas walked from behind Tim, eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "You know these dudes?"

I didn't answer, seeing the knife in his hand, nervously.

Davina noticed that, pursing her lips, turning to the vampires, "You got us here. Now let them down. And make him drop that knife"

"Well, first, we have to have a little chat about you returning to the fold" Klaus told us.

Marcel looked at Klaus, "What did I say, Klaus? I got this" He looked at me and Davina "D., B., what happened? Why'd you run? Talk to me. Hey, I can make it right"

"How, by threatening our friends?" I asked

"Actually, that was my idea" Klaus told us. I clenched my fists "Apologies. I've been known to go too far to make a point, But I do always get results"

"You pretend to be so confident, but I know the truth" Davina told told him. "You're afraid everyone can see what you really are. An animal" She grabbed my hand, torturing Klaus with her magic, breaking his bones, making him fall to his knees in agonizing pain. Our hands glowing as I made sure to keep her magic in check. "A beast. Why don't you show us your real face?" She used her magic to force Klaus transform into his werewolf side painfully slow. "That's enough of you"

Davina used magic to snap Klaus' neck, letting him fall.

"Davina, you don't have to do this" Elijah told us.

I snapped my head toward him, angrily. "You!" I pointed at him with my free hand. "You looked us in the eyes and lied to our faces. Pretended you wanted to help us, told us you would keep my siphoning a secret"

"Elizabeth, listen to me-" Elijah began

"You call yourself the noble one, but you're a killer just like your brother" I told him. "For 1,000 years, you've fed on innocent blood. Why don't you choke on it?" I took advantage of Davina's magic to use it against Elijah and luckily for me, she was used to my siphoning it no longer hurt. Elijah started to choke, blood spilling out of his mouth and chin, falling unconscious. My eyes met Marcel's "And you. We trusted you. I loved you. Since you saved me that night"

"Beth-" Marcel began, nervously

"No" Davina snapped, stepping in front of me. Our hands no longer glowing. I made sure to siphon her only when she used magic. "You have no right to talk to her or me. Not after everything you've done! I loved you too but you were just using me to stay in power. You don't care about me" She looked at me. "You don't care about Beth. Never have"

Marcel looked at us, pleadingly "You're wrong"

"When you lost to Klaus, you handed us over like some trophy" Davina told him. "Maybe I should boil you in bronze"

"I care" Marcel told us "I took you in like you were my own blood"

Suddenly, Marcel chocked for a moment, falling to the ground, unconscious. Rebekah was revealed to be behind him, holding an iron poker she used to stab him through the chest, looking at us.

"Come on now, loves" Rebekah told us "Don't tell me you were falling for that. Isn't it time for us girls to have a chat?"

~8~

Rebekah looked at bodies of her brothers and Marcel in the ground, raising her eyebrows "Now, that is impressive, and well deserved, in my opinion" She looked at me, "More so coming from the girl without magic of her own" I crossed my arms, not trusting her. Davina looked at her suspiciously. "Now, before you turn on me, I have a surprise for you"

Josh walked into the courtyard.

"Josh, what are you doing?" Davina asked, worriedly "Get out of here"

Rebekah walked closer to Josh, grabbing him by his throat.

"What are you doing?" Josh asked.

"Now, if I were Klaus, I would rip Josh's head from his neck, feed it to a nightwalker, and that would be the end of your friend" Rebekah told us "But hurting people is such a boyish thing to do, like how Klaus compelled Davina's fiddler on the roof and Beth's friend to possibly slit his throat, and while I am many things, I'm certainly not my brother. It's okay, Timothy. You can come down. No one is gonna hurt you. Lucas you can drop the knife and come down too"

"He told me I couldn't climb down off this beam" Tim told her

Lucas glanced at the knife in his hand, "He said the same to me. Told me to keep the knife too"

"Then don't climb, sillies!" Rebekah told them "Am I the only smart one in the room? Jump"

Lucas and Tim exchanged a look. Lucas shrugged at his friend. Tim jumped down first. Rebekah caught him, setting him on the floor. We looked up at Lucas. Lucas nervously jumped down, still holding the knife. Rebekah caught him, immediately disarming him. Lucas stared at his hand in a daze, looking at the knife in Rebekah's hand for a moment.

Tim grabbed Lucas' arm, nodding slightly. They both began walking closer to us

"Davina, Beth, how did you two do all that?" Tim asked

"How did we even get here?" Lucas asked.

"We'll explain everything, I promise" Davina told them

I looked at Rebekah, "Why are you doing this?"

"Seems to me that you're the one holding all the cards, but you don't know who to trust" Rebekah told us "I've just proven that you can trust me. Now I'd like to show you one more thing. Won't take long. You can bring your friends"

~8~

Rebekah lead me, Davina, Tim, Lucas and Josh down into a place downstairs called the Garden

"Oh, don't worry" Josh told us "They're not really dead, just really hungry... and I'm not helping"

"You think my brother Nik is awful?" Rebekah asked "Marcel learned from the best. This is how he treats his so-called friends who betray him. Most of what these poor souls did is no worse than what Josh did. Take Thierry, for example. He was Marcel's most trusted friend. Klaus tricked him into breaking one of Marcel's rules. Marcel knows this, and yet he keeps Thierry locked in here day after day, suffering"

"This is insane" Tim told us

"This is a psycho lair" Lucas told us

"Why are you telling us this?" Davina asked

"Because you both need to know who you're dealing with, who you can trust" Rebekah answered

Tim looked at Davina, "Hey, hey, it's gonna be okay. I mean, you're gonna be all right. Here. Drink something"

Tim handed her a bottle of water

Davina drank from it.

Lucas glanced at Tim.

"Davina, Elizabeth, we all have been lied to and taken advantage of by Marcel and Klaus" Rebekah told us "Maybe together, we can get a little payback"

Tim started coughing and fell to his knees

"Tim?" Davina asked worriedly

"It was Klaus" Lucas told us unblinkingly.

I looked at him worriedly.

"He made me do it" Tim told us "I didn't even know what I was doing until I made you-"

"Made her what?" Rebekah asked

"Drink" Tim answered.

"Tim?" Davina asked

"He poisoned the water" Rebekah realized, horrified.

"Tim?" Davina asked worriedly, starting to cough.

"Dav?" I asked

Josh stepped forward worriedly, "Oh, no"

Lucas stepped next to me, "I'm sorry"

I looked at Lucas in confusion.

Lucas had in his hand another knife, suddenly stabbing me in the stomach making me gasp in pain.

Josh and Rebekah turned to us in alarm.

Josh vamp sped to Lucas, pulling him back. Lucas pulled the knife away from me, taking it with him. I immediately pressed the stab wound to try and stop the blood.

"What the hell man?!" Josh snapped, rushing to my side, helping me stand.

Lucas breathed heavily, looking at me in guilt "I'm sorry Eli. He told me to do this once Davina fell. I never wanted, never wanted to-" Lucas shook his head, in guilt. "I'm sorry. I hope you forgive me one day. I love you, Eli"

Rebekah widened her eyes in realization, "No-"

Lucas slit his throat, falling to the ground dead.

~8~

Josh fed me his blood, allowing me rest against him as we watched Davina worriedly. My eyes were puffy and red from the crying and Josh didn't let me go, his arms around me as we sat next to Davina.

Rebekah's phone rang, pulling it out, answering "I'm with Davina and Elizabeth, and Davina's dying because of your treachery. We actually managed to save Elizabeth from a stab wound"

Rebekah put the phone in speakers

"Well, I tried to talk to them, out of respect for Marcel, but they made it quite clear they are not our friends" Klaus told her from the other line "My apologies if you thought they were yours. And as to Elizabeth, apparently I wasn't very specific in my compulsion. Glad to know she's still alive"

"Asshole" I murmured under my breath, glaring at Rebekah's phone, glancing at Lucas' body, my lip trembling in sadness and guilt.

"Stop taunting the poor girl" Rebekah snapped. I glanced at her, "She just witnessed her friend killing himself. Just tell me how to cure Davina. Vampire blood isn't working"

"No" Klaus told her "It wouldn't. You see, the poison I compelled Timothy to feed her is quite potent. It's just a matter of time for her"

"For both of them, you diabolical bastard" Rebekah told him "They're children. We could've dealt with them fairly"

"There is no dealing with those who threaten us" Klaus told her "Davina and Elizabeth sealed their fates when they stood against me. This was their choice, not mine"

Rebekah hung up in anger.

I had Davina's hand in my own, tears falling down my cheeks. Josh held me close comfortingly as I cried as she died.

~8~

Klaus called Rebekah with news about Davina recovering. Marcel had gone to a witch to make her put on a spell on us as a failsafe in case Klaus did something like this, killing us. However, it only was for Davina and myself. Sadly, Tim wasn't going to make it.

And I knew she'd be devastated and full of guilt. Just like I was with Lucas' death. I couldn't believe Klaus had compelled him to kill me and then kill himself in front of me. I had thought at first Klaus of a bad person but with this.... He crossed the line of myself ever forgiving him or thinking he could be redeemed of his acts.

Suddenly, Davina revived, gasping back to life

I closed my eyes in relief, resting my head on Josh's shoulder.

Davina looked at us "Beth? Josh?" Her gaze fell to the blood in my dress, gasping "What happened? Where's Tim? Lucas?" I looked sadly at Tim's body next to Davina, tears filling my eyes. Davina followed my gaze, "Tim?" She shook Tim's body, trying to get him wake up "Tim? Tim, Tim, wake up. Tim, please wake up. Open your eyes. No, no. Please wake up. Please don't leave me alone"

I looked toward Lucas' body was, Rebekah having taking him away after Klaus called her and left us alone. I tried to fight her but Josh restrained me, allowing me to cry more.

Josh wrapped his arm around me, looking at Davina sympathetically.

I looked down in guilt.

~8~

I lead the way back to the courtyard slowly, my steps slow as I refused to look up from the floor. Rebekah had a sleeping Davina in her arms, offering to take her to our room after she got back.

Marcel walked closer sadly, "Beth. You okay? Davina?"

"Don't" I told him, without looking at him "We are exhausted. Davina died and got back just to see her friend dead next to her. My friend tried to kill me and then killed himself in front of me. I almost died too if it weren't for Josh. We need to sleep off our devastation"

Rebekah sighed sadly, "You heard her" She looked at me, sympathetically "Where's her room?"

"No" Marcel told her, "I got her. I got her" Marcel took Davina. Rebekah placed a hand in my shoulder, squeezing softly, walking out of the abattoir. Marcel looked at me. "You should get some rest too"

"I know" I snapped weakly. "I can rest later"

I turned around, walking upstairs without another word.

Marcel sighed from behind me, following after me.

~8~

We got inside Davina's room. I watched intently at Marcel laying Davina on her bed. He caught me looking. I looked away

"B," Marcel started.

"Don't talk to me" I told him.

Marcel sighed, "You okay?"

"I said don't talk to me" I repeated. Marcel stared at me sadly. I sighed, slowly touching my healed stomach, coming in contact with the dried blood "I almost died. My friends died in front of me. I thought my best friend was going to die too. How do you think I am?"

Marcel stayed silent.

Elijah was watching us from the doorway. I managed a small glare, taking Davina's hand in my own. Elijah looked at some of Davina's charcoal drawings and sketches, "These drawings, what are they?"

I followed his gaze, "She drew those the whole time she was in the attic. She had some done before I met her, said they're different than what she draws when she senses magic" I hesitated, looking toward the darker, maniac ones. "These ones. She once allowed me to get a sense of them whenever she began to draw them" I gulped, nervously and in fear. "These, she called them evil" Marcel and Elijah exchanged a look. I looked back at Davina, "And for what I felt. She was right to do so"

~8~

A while later, I made sure Elijah and Marcel were gone, opening the door, looking both ways, retreating back inside, closing the door. A small smile played on my lips, turning around to Davina

Davina was still laying on her bed where Marcel left her. She opened her eyes. "They won't know what hit them. They're gonna pay"

We exchanged a look

I smirked, nodding, walking out of her room, stopping in the middle of the hallway. I picked up my stash of magic locket, sensing it still had some of Davina's unstable magic inside it. I let it fall back to my neck, looking up.

"They won't really know" I murmured, nodding slowly, walking toward my room.
