6 - Fruit of the Poisoned Tree
We had let Elijah go, trusting in his word.
Davina was sketching with charcoal on her easel while I was drawing.
Elijah arrived, leaning against the doorway, knocking on the door.
Davina and I looked up
Elijah held up several pages wrapped in a cloth "I made you a promise"
Davina smiled, "Come in"
"I hope we don't regret this" I murmured, biting on my thumbnail

Davina spread one of the pages of Elijah's mother, Esther's grimoire on the table "It's a spell of unknotting?"
Elijah held an elaborately woven knot of rope toward her. "This is a sanguinum knot. The witches use it as representational magic. If you can unknot this using that spell, you will have taken a step towards learning control. This is one of my mother's later spells. It requires much more power than you realize" He placed some kind of pendant in the table in front of me. "Now, I know you require a source of magic to use your abilities. This is not much, but if you work on this pendant with this spell" He placed a page of the grimoire in front of me, "You can use this magic to make it your own container of magic" I looked at the pendant and the spell in interest, smiling "If you two can perform this, then I shall return with another page. And then two of you can practice together" Elijah walked toward the door, stopping, looking at us "A spell of your choosing, next time"
"Did you kept my existence and what I can do a secret?" I asked
"I haven't told anyone" Elijah told us.
I sighed in relief, smiling
Elijah smiled back, turning around, walking out of the room.
Davina looked down at the spell and the knot on her table
I looked at the pendant curiously, sensing magic inside it, eager to siphon it.

Davina was working on the unlinking spell Elijah gave her.
I was slowly siphoning the magic of the pendant, careful not to take too much out of it, even if I knew it wouldn't hurt me. I could hear Davina reading the incantation from the page, clearly struggling.
"Isn't that supposed to sound like Latin?" I asked, lowering my own spell. I didn't understand Latin very well and was trying to learn the words first. Translation later.
Davina groaned, looking up. "Yes" she answered simply. I shrugged "Say yours if you're feeling confident" She told me. I opened my mouth, closing it after a moment, shaking my head. Davina chuckled "See? You can't pronounce them either"
"Who said I didn't?" I replied, closing my fingers around the pendant, letting my hands glow a faint red, failing and trying to pronounce the words of my spell correctly. "Okay, I can't either"
Davina smiled, shaking her head. "Oh, Beth" She laughed, placing her hands over the knot again, reading from the page "Phesmatos omnio legares coldate sangorium"
I looked back at her, staring at the knot
The knot didn't move or changed.
Davina exhaled in frustration, running her hand through her hair angrily. "I can't do it!"
I lowered my hands, "Easy, D. Calm down. I know you can do it, you're a freaking awesome witch. The most powerful of all. I know you can do it"
Davina closed her eyes, nodding slowly "You're right. I can do it"
I smiled encouragingly

Once I did manage to pull away the magic of the pendant, I was completely sure there was nothing left, I began to read slowly the spell to transform this necklace into a container of magic. I didn't know that much what it was about but as long as it helped the magic being stashed in there and instead of me to prevent my body to crash with so many magic then be it.
Davina still seemed to have trouble with the spell, reading it intently. After a moment, she began to read the spell again, this time picking up the knot with both hands, taking a deep breath "Phesmatos omnio legares coldate sangorium"
I watched Davina repeat the spell in awe as the knot in her hands began to levitate in the air, beginning to unknot itself.
With her as an inspiration, listening to the way she pronounced each work, I began reading my own spell, watching the pendant levitate in the air with a glow before lowering in my hands.
I looked back up at Davina, seeing the knot was completely unknotted, still floating mid air.
"Dav" I called out. "Told you you were an amazing witch"
Davina opened her eyes, looking at the unknotted rope in complete surprise, "Oh God!" She giggled, turning to face me, "I did it!"
I smiled widely, raising the necklace Elijah gave me "You did. And so did I"
Davina grabbed the rope from midair, turning to me happily. "We did! Oh, my God!" She wrapped her arms around me, "Now, we can actually learn magic together!"
My smile grew even bigger of possible, returning the embrace, looking at the necklace with misty eyes. Now that I had a way to conserve magic, I didn't need to siphon from Davina every time. The magic from the necklace was still there inside me, I could feel it. Closing my fingers around the necklace, I watched happily how it reacted to me.
Now I could be a proper witch. A good one, a better one than what my family ever was.
