"What the hell are you doing here Mr. Abhishek Prem Mehra? And how on earth did you manage to come here anyway?" asked a stunned Pragya with a considerable amount of curiosity in her voice. She was sitting before a gigantic mirror in a circular room filled with festive finery.
Abhi uncertainly looked at the window to his right from where he had climbed in after managing to balance his body on the water pipe that ran adjacent to this window. Pragya followed his gaze and flipped when realization dawned on her.
Pragya - Are you mad? What if something had happened to you? Why are you always so reckless?
But Abhi wasn't paying any attention to what she was saying. Instead he fixed his gaze upon her appearance. She was wearing a heavy vermilion lehenga thickly embroidered with elaborate golden threads. She wore heavy traditional golden jewellery around her neck, which covered her fragile collarbones, and to add to those were heavy golden bangles in her wrist. Her hair was done into an elegant bun and covering her head was a red piece of embroidered cloth. Abhi recognized this dupatta'. It was the same she had worn on her wedding day with Abhi. It was a gift to her from his daadi, she chose to wear it again today, for her second wedding.
Pragya - Abhi, are you listening to me? Why are you here?
Pragya shook him lightly and Abhi jerked awake.
Abhi - Chasmish? So it is true? You are --- I had heard rumours but I have always rubbished them.
Pragya - So now you know? Great. Please leave and never drop by again in my life.
Abhi - Do you love him?
Pragya - I don't think you are significant enough in my life to discuss my feelings for my husband with you. Besides, if anyone sees you here, it will be a mess. Please leave.
Abhi - Would-be husband' chashmish. Would-be'. You are not married to him yet.
Pragya - And the yet' will last for another fifteen minutes Abhi. After that I will be called to the mandap for the wedding. Why am I even telling you all this. I am starting a new life and I don't want the dark shadows of my past to hover around my future in the form of you. So before anyone spots you and causes trouble for you, let me call Purab, he will guide you outside safely.
Abhi - So this yet' that is about to last for fifteen minutes are the last fifteen minutes of our relationship, and I would like to utilize it well. Please listen to me chashmish.
Pragya - Nonsense. We are divorced a little more than a year now, and we have had no other relationship with each other after that. Not even that of an acquaintances. So nothing between us is left to die tonight Abhi. Please go.
Abhi - No, I wont go. We had married for my daadi and she recognized our social marriage not our marriage registry documents. So a silly signature on a piece of paper cannot count the end of our wedding - neither in daadi's eyes nor mine. It will only end, when you take the seven holy vows of marriage with someone else, and as you pointed out, that is not until another fifteen minutes.
Pragya - I don't have the time or the patience for this.
Abhi - How many times will I apologize to you before you take me back in your life? I know I have wronged you in the worst ways. I know I am the reason for all your miseries. But I have realized my mistake and repented for months now. I have lost count of the number of times I have begged you for forgiving me and coming back to my life. When you made me promise that I shouldn't contact you till you contact me, I kept my words - I kept it until tonight. Chashmish if not for me, at least for daadi, give me another chance?
Pragya - Do you recognize this dupatta Abhi? It is the same one from our wedding. It was daadi's gift to me. You know why I wore it today? It is because, daadi gave it to me today again. And she said, it was a gift for me such that I bring good luck to my in-laws house. She had gifted it to me before your and mine wedding got fixed. And it had indeed brought good luck to your house, now that I am restarting my journey, she thought it is only fair I take the goodluck to my new home as well. You know what that means Abhi? It means daadi has accepted my decision and she supports it with all her heart. That is all I care about - as for you, I don't care whether you accept my wedding or not, as long as you stay far away from me for life.
Abhi stared at her silently. He was out of words. His chashmish had really moved on in life. She wasn't looking back and she didn't care if Abhi was waiting there with his hand out stretched for her. He wanted to make her realize that he truly loved her and no one else fitted his dreams other than her - it was always her - he was too arrogant to realize and today when he did, he was too late, she had gone too far.
He was making up his mind to leave her with a happy future and never return, but before he could leave he looked into her eyes one last time - he was going to preserve the sight of her mesmerising eyes deep in his heart for the rest of his life, that was when there was a door knock.
BB - Di, open the door, you are being called for the pheras now.
Abhi was about to turn around and leave the same way he had come in, like a bad dream for chashmish, but in that moment he saw it in her widened eyes - a sudden fear of the unknown future and soft escape from her mouth, of one word - Abhi. It seemed like in that name she found solace from the fear that rooted her on the spot and refrained her from responding to her sister. Abhi knew Pragya wasn't calling him. She probably didn't even realize what escaped her mouth, She probably would have uttered the same even if he wasn't around - it was an expression that gave her courage when she faltered, she didn't realize, but it was her support - her feelings for Abhi was what helped her sail through all the tides and kept her together.
A grin came across his face and he realized, he wasn't going anywhere, he was here to stay!
BB - Di, what is taking you so long? Please open the door! Di?
Abhi - BB give us a moment, your di is deciding whether she will elope with me or go face her would-be husband in yet another lifetime' and tell him she is sorry but she can't marry him.
There was a stunned silence from outside and Pragya shot Abhi a panicked look. She hurried to open the door and let a scandalized BB walk in. BB walked in and shut the door behind her. She looked at Pragya intently for a few minutes.
BB - Di, run away. I know you love Abhi still. I know you may compromise in this marriage and lead an average life, but why would you do so, when you can live an extra ordinary one with the love of your life, Abhi? You guys go, I will handle everyone here. I think if you go down now, looking at mom and the impending societal disgrace you may change your mind, but everyone deserves to be happy di, I will handle Varun and explain why you couldn't make it.
Pragya - BB! What are you saying? Elope from my wedding with Varun with my ex-husband Abhi who treated me like material possession? Are you---
BB - Oh Shut up di, we don't have time for this. I have a hundred valid points to counter argue on this and you know them too- but for now I give you one - there has not been one night in the last one year where you didn't take Abhi's name in your sleep and whimpered. Di please don't argue, this is not the right time, if mom sends someone else to call you, or worse she comes herself, it will be very difficult. I was always hoping that you see it for yourself that you belong to Abhi, and I was sad to see you never let that realization dawn. But if it has aroused, however late, I wont let you waste it.
Pragya - BB, okay I admit I may still have feelings for him, but I don't trust him, I cant ---
Abhi - Chashmish, I guess I don't deserve your trust, but do you believe the fact that if I love someone, I would do whatever I can to keep her happy?
Pragya remembered her first wedding with Abhi, how he had taken that horrendous step purely for the love of his sister and daadi. She stammered a yes'.
Abhi - For now the fact - that you love me and if I ever love you, I will be as caring and trustworthy - Is it good to elope with? Once we are out of here, I have the rest of my life to make you believe how much I love you. Do you love me enough to take this plunge chashmish? I promise you wont regret this.
Pragya knew if Abhi had said these same things before she was called for the pheras, she wouldn't have relented, but that moment, when she was called for the pheras, it was too overpowering - she felt she was finally going away from Abhi forever - she realized she was wagering her life for another unknown man she didn't love, fear groped her. At least with Abhi, she knew she loved him, and somewhere she felt he did too - if not love there was comfort and definitely no fear. Abhi felt like her safety haven at that point, hence she couldn't disagree to him anymore.
Pragya - Abhi if you break my heart this time I will die.
Abhi grinned- In that case chashmish, you have just signed up for immortality!
BB - Thank you di, for saving yourself from this marriage, you always belonged with Abhi. Just get married first and then come back, I will handle all this until then.
Pargya and BB hug, when there is a soft tap in the window. Abhi turns around sharply, but BB assures it was only Purab setting up a ladder for them, as BB had already texted him.
As Abhi and Pragya climbed their way out, BB called after them to come soon. Hearing this Abhi's daadi who had come up to see what was taking Pragya long danced in joy - Her Abhi had finally made the right choice and her Pragya will be hers forever now. Yes it was going to be a difficult situation they would face while informing everybody she thought - a lot of questions will be asked, but if it ensured her Abhi and Pragya's togetherness - well then bring it on!
