19. Words

Sometimes only paper will listen to you,
That's the way to get thoughts out of your mind,
When you write like that's what you need to do.

Put the pen to paper and you will find,
The words stumble and then rush out,
That's the way to get thoughts out of your mind

Write questions, answers, many a doubt,
Seek the daring truth or a simple tale to tell,
The words stumble and then rush out.

Trapping you in an enchanted spell,
The inked words take a life of their own,
Seek the daring truth or a simple tale to tell.

As you write, see how the story's grown,
For worlds emerge and adventures are born,
The inked words take a life of their own.

So keep writing, even when weary and worn,
Sometimes only paper will listen to you;
For worlds emerge, adventures are born,
When you write like that's what you need to do.

Day 19 is for Terzanelle.

This is a marriage of the Italian Terza Rima with the French Villanelle by Lewis Turco in his "The Book of Forms and can present a challenge to the serious poet. It consists of five stanzas of three lines (tercets), and the final stanza having four lines (quatrain).

The middle line of the first stanza is copied and becomes the last line of the following stanza and the first line of that stanza rhymes with it, thus making it an interlocking form. The final stanza follows the same pattern as previously, with the first line of the first stanza becoming the second line of the last stanza and the last line of the first stanza becoming the last line of the last stanza also, completing the link back to the first stanza.

As an alternative, Turco also suggests making the repeat line be the second line still rhyming with the first forming one couplet and the interlocking lines from the first stanza making another couplet. The two final schemes that make up the last stanza that could be either: .f. f. .a. a ... or: .f. .a. .f. .a.
