10. Remorse
Who will tame this wind? The one that rises
From the raging flames of disgrace and shame.
Who can quench the guilt that agonises
And singes your soul, as you, yourself blame?
How do you justify what you became,
In the stormy race to achieve your dreams?
You trampled lives to attain glory and fame
How could you never hear their pleas and screams?
The colour of remorse, pitch black it gleams
When you learn victory isn't what it seems.
10 line poem for Day 10 - A Decuain (pronounced deck won), is 10 line (Decastich) form created by Shelley A. Cephas, and can be used for any subject.
The convention is to use 10 syllables or iambic pentameter, and there are 3 choices of rhyme schemes:
> a b a b b c b c a a
> a b a b b c b c b b
> a b a b b c b c c c
I used the third option.
Ten Line Poetry Forms
According to Turco's "Book of Forms", the Decastich is any whole poem of ten lines.
There is no reference to meter or rhyme pattern and perhaps it for this reason, (lack of regulation) as to why it has been the subject of so much experimentation of poetic ideas lately.
Whilst researching this form under "ten line poetry forms" quite a lot of information emerged including two alternative names used for the Decastich, the Sonnetina and the Tritina. It was also found that the Australian poet, Alex Skovron had published a book titled "Infinite City" consisting of 100 ten line poems in which he called the form Sonatina.
Later it was discovered that several other poets had also had the idea of a mini-sonnet and were using already established forms ie. couplets, quatrains, quintains, and sestets of various types to construct poems they called Sonnetina. Quite logically it was assumed, if forms are used similar to those of sonnet forms, then why should they not also be labeled as miniature sonnets or Sonnetina.
As stated previously ten-line poetry is not new and conventional library, as well as internet research finds ten line poetry forms fall into three general groups, free verse, (Decastich), miniature sonnets, (Sonnetina), and Tritina.
