Assurance of Salvation (Part 3)
F. What Happens if I sin?
This is important because this is what makes most Christians feel defeated – that they are not saved!
1. Is it possible for a Christian to sin?
YES
Look up 1 John 1:8
"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us."
2. Does God want a Christian to sin?
NO
Look up 1 John 2:1
"My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:"
3. If a Christian sins, what is the one thing we are to do about it?
Confess it to God.
Look up 1 John 1:9
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
4. When I sin, Who appears before God the Father in heaven on my behalf?
Jesus Christ.
Look up 1 John 2:1
"My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:"
5. What does a Christian lose if he sins?
Fellowship with God and other Christians.
Look up 1 John 1:6-10
"If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us."
G. Can I Ever Lose My Salvation?
1. We shall NEVER perish (John 10:28)
"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."
2. No man is able to REMOVE us from God's hand. (John 10:29)
"My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. "
3. God will NOT cast us out. (John 6:37)
"All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out."
4. The responsibility of keeping us saved is the Lord's, not ours and that Christ can lose nothing. (John 6:39)
"And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. "
5. The kind of life I now have is EVERLASTING. (John 5:24)
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."
6. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. (Romans 8:38–39)
"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
7. We are kept by God. (1 Peter 1:5)
"Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."
8. God keeps us from falling (Jude 24)
"Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,"
9. God will continue His good work in us (Philippians 1:6)
"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:"
10. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13)
"In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, [sealed with the Holy Spirit]".
11. Our salvation is a gift of God. A gift taken back by a giver is not a gift.(Ephesians 2:8)
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:"
12. We have done nothing to gain salvation. If we have done nothing to gain it, we can do nothing to lose it. (Ephesians 2:9)
"Not of works, lest any man should boast."
Before we were saved we were under the control of Satan: (Ephesians 2:2-3)
"Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others."
God is our heavenly father. (Romans 8:15)
"For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. "
Christians are the Sons of God (1 John 3:1)
"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not."
In our Earthly family, when a child does wrong, his parents do not cast him out of the family and disown him. They correct and chasten their child... but the child is still a member of the family.
When a Christian sins, they are not cast out of God's family, thus losing their salvation. However, like any loving father, God will chastise the erring Christian to restore them to fellowship (Hebrews 12:6)
"For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth."
Therefore REJOICE!
Because ONCE SAVED, you are ALWAYS SAVED!
Memorize: 1 John 5:11
"And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life."
