Chapter 13: Miku at the Mall

(A/N: And now!!! A huge thank you to the first ever person to add my book to their reading list!!! Thank you Sugakookies446!!!)

Len's POV:

Soooooooo......there's a girl sleeping on me. My phone was completely dead so I put it on the charger upstairs. I can't play games on it so now I have nothing to do. Great! I just realized my phone won't even be charging since the power's out! To top it off it is kind of dark down here.

Oh...never mind...Rin just got the generator working. I waited for ten minutes to hear any sounds of screaming or flames and then decided that Rin was fine.

My headphones had fallen off of Miku a while ago, but the thunder doesn't seem to bother her while she's sleeping. I am super incredibly BORED. I don't think I ever understood what actual boredom was like before.

I heard the alarm that sounds whenever the door is open sound upstairs.

"RIN! LEN! WHERE ARE YOU!!! IS MIKU OKAY!?" I heard my mom yell. My mom opened the basement door and practically ran down the stairs.

She stopped when she got to the bottom and saw me and Miku.

Rin appeared behind her. "Did the headphones fall off?" She asked me.

"Yeah." I said pointing to the headphones next to Miku.

"To block out the thunder? Oh that's so smart!" My mom said. "Okay I'm going to get the groceries put away, and maybe eat one of the delicious looking cupcakes that are on my counter."

Rin looked at me. "Weird...how did she know that Miku was scared of thunder?"

Hm...that is weird. Miku's soft breathing faltered and she stirred a little bit. Then her eyes opened and she jumped up.

"Good morning." Rin laughed.

"Ah! Did I fall asleep!? I'm sorry!" She said bowing to me.

"It's alright. I didn't know you were scared of thunder." I replied.

"Oh...uh..."

"Len don't put her on the spot!" Rin yelled at me. Then she gave Miku a big hug. "It's okay, you should see me when I see a spider."

Miku shivered. "Spiders are the worst. Any other bug is fine." Then she looked at me and blushed. "Uh, what time is it?"

I feel bad that she's embarrassed, but I understand; I've fallen asleep on Rin before and my mom took pictures. I glanced at my watch. "It is now...twelve o'clock."

"I should get home." Miku sighed.

"Hey I have an idea! Let's all go out for lunch!" Rin cried clapping her hands together.

"But..." Miku started.

"I'll go ask mom!" Rin yelled running up the stairs.

I shook my head and Miku started twisting some of her hair. "Rin seems really nice." She said.

"Seems." I stated.

"No! That's not what I meant! I meant I think she's nice!" Miku tried to explain waving her arms.

"No, I know what you meant, and I'm saying she only seems nice." I replied.

"Oh." Miku started twisting her hair again.

Rin came back downstairs. "Mom says yes! Let's go!" She yelled running back upstairs. Then she came back down when she realized we weren't following her. "Come on you guys!"

"But I didn't bring any money..." Miku explained, which made sense since she didn't really expect to be forced to have lunch with us, but there is NO stopping Rin when she gets an idea.

"That's okay! Len's paying!" Rin called running back up the stairs.

"WHAT! Hey! Rin get back here!" I yelled chasing after my idiot sister.

Miku followed us into the mudroom where we keep our shoes.

"Len go get your money." Rin said waving me away while putting on her shoes.

"But..." I started.

"No it's okay! I'll just go home and eat! My dad went to the grocery store but I think I have just enough bread to make a sandwich, unless Mikuo ate it..." Miku reassured us. (It wasn't very reassuring though...)

"Alright fine..." I said heading to my room.

Miku's POV:

I don't want them to waste their money on me when I can just go home and eat something! It will make me feel terrible.

Len reappeared, stuffing something that I assume was money into his pocket. "So where are we going?" He asked.

"Oh! Oh! How about the mall!!!" Rin yelled. "Then we can go shopping after!"

"But I don't have any money." I reminded her.

"Well we can go looking and then we can go back one day and actually shop!" She replied gleefully.

Mrs. Kagamine came out with her keys. "So where am I driving you kids?" She asked.

"To the mall!!!" Rin squealed.  Mrs. Kagamine smiled. "Alrighty then get into the car!"

I have no idea what just happened.

I am currently sitting in the backseat of my friend's mother's car; next to my friend's sister, who every five minutes asks me some random question about my life.

"So what was your childhood best friend named?" Was one of the questions.

"Um, I don't know. I don't really remember anything about my childhood." I said.

"Oh..." was the reply. "Well what about your best friend before Len?"

"I never really had any friends." I said. "Usually I tried to stay away from people, or else I was bullied."

"AW! That's so SAD!" Rin cried. "Isn't that so SAD Len?" Without waiting for Len's reply, she kept firing questions at me.

Then she asked me a question that I was hoping wouldn't come up.

"So your brother's at home?"

"Yes."

"And your dad's at the grocery store..."

"Yes..."

"Is your mom working or something?"

Mrs. Kagamine choked on something. Len whipped around and glared at his sister. "Rin SHUT UP!" He said in a really scary threatening voice.

"What!? Why!?" She asked.

"You are such an idiot..." Len muttered, but I don't think Rin heard it.

"Why Len?"

"My mom died when I was really little..." I whispered.

Rin shut up. The only sound was a distant car alarm as we pulled into the mall parking lot.

Mrs. Kagamine parked the car and pulled out the keys. "Well should we go get something to eat?" She asked.

"Are you coming too?" Rin inquired.

"Well you're not the only hungry ones." She replied with a sad smile.

We went inside the food court and Rin elected Chick-fil-a as the food we should eat. It took her a little while to decide between that and pizza.

Mrs. Kagamine ended up paying (to Len's relief). She got us all milkshakes too which was really nice.

We ate our lunch and talked a little bit. I decided to go people watching. If you don't know what it is I will explain it briefly.

People watching can be done anywhere, and its a lot of fun! All you do is scope around and look for someone who looks interesting. Then you can invent a whole backstory for them, and what will happen too.

I saw a lady in the corner sitting with her daughter (at least I imagined it was her daughter but you never know!) She looked a little sad. She must have lost her husband and is trying her best to make her daughter happy. The daughter is turned away from me but I imagine that she looks sad too. She loved her father, and with him gone they had to move and leave all her friends behind. She feels alone and depressed.

"Miku!" Rin called.

I looked at Rin and noticed Len and Mrs. Kagamine were looking at me too.

"Earth to Miku!" Rin laughed.

"Oh! Sorry! I must have spaced out!" I cried.

"That's okay." Len said. "Rin spaces out ALL the time."

"I do not!" Rin yelled.

"Yeah you kind of do." Len smirked.

"Mom!" Rin squeaked turning to Mrs. Kagamine. Mrs. Kagamine however, didn't answer. She was gazing at me sadly. It kind of freaked me out. When she noticed I was looking back she blinked twice and came back to earth.

"Sorry what? I must have spaced out." She smiled.

"Guess it runs in the family." Len laughed.

"Whatever! Let's go shopping!" Rin cried jumping out of her chair.

"You mean browsing" Len corrected.

"Whatever." Rin yelled grabbing my arm and jumping up and down. "Let's go!"
