Chapter 11

He stood right in front of the mirror giving his tie the last touch and clicked on the Bluetooth in his ear.

He sighed. Another call not attended by her.

It had been two days since he talked to her. The last time they conversed was the night of their date. She didn't attend any of his calls after that. It was his umpteeth attempt this time.

For some reason she was avoiding him and he had no idea why. He was almost tempted to drive over to Laxmi Nagar. But he decided to wait until the evening.

So he gathered his files and laptop in the working bag, all ready to leave for office.

Anjali entered his room just in that moment with a pleasant smile and an envelope in her hand.

Anjali - Good morning Chote. Got a little time?

Arnav - You even need to ask?

He immediately moved over and kept his arm around his sister's shoulder to support her. He made her sit down on the recliner.

Arnav - I'll always have time for you!

She cupped his cheek and ran her hand through his hair before handing the envelope to him.

Anjali - I'd like you to have a look at these.

He frowned in bewilderment and opened the covering to have his expression change. It contained photos of various girls. He rolled his eyes half and handed it back. He was not naive. He knew what she intended with those pictures

Arnav - Di, I don't need these.

Anjali - Yes, you do. Akash is married now and people are talking. It's high time you too settle down.

He stood off the recliner and shook his head in disbelief.

Arnav - Di, do I look like I care for what people talk about me? I wouldn't have been where I am today if rumours bothered me.

Anjali watched her brother as he closed the zip of his working bag. She realized he wasn't going to finish the conversation. So she needed to approach it the other way.

Anjali - It's not just the rumours. I've had to put away plenty of things ever since AR reached success. But I want my brother to be happy. And I want little nieces and nephews.

He cocked an eyebrow at her as she got up to help him with the coat. He let her.

She held the jacket open while he slipped his arms into it.

Anjali - Please choose a good girl and marry.

Arnav - Di, I'm very well capable of giving you nieces and nephews without marriage.

She dropped her jaw at his shameless statement and smacked his forehead lightly. He beamed at her wickedly, making her shake her head back and forth in rejection.

Another failed attempt. But she hadn't laid out of all of her cards.

Anjali - Fine. Then I guess I can forget the double wedding.

Even though his look wasn't curious enough to her taste, it was interested enough for her to still continue talking. To be honest even if he hadn't shown any interest at all, she was still going to provide him with the information.

Anjali - We'll ask Khushiji's hand for NK bhai and I was hoping that you could marry at the same mandap.

She literally jumped inside for getting just what she hoped for. A dumbfounded reaction. His nostrils were flaring, his teeth were clenched. Jealousy and anger was like written over his face. It solidified her doubt further. She wasn't hallucinating, he had feelings for Khushi. And she wanted to do everything for him to realize.

Arnav - Khushi won't...I mean, she can't...she doesn't...

Khushi and NK? Why is Di so smitten in the matter? Already Khushi is back to avoiding me again. This girl is always pushing me to limits.

He stared his sister's sudden uplifted eyebrows which displayed the curiosity on her face. He was not sure how to react to that planning of hers...in front of her. After all she was talking about marrying the girl he loved to his cousin. He wondered if he should be interfering. But he'd reveal himself with that. And Anjali's inquisitive attention wasn't helping at all.

Anjali - She doesn't what?

Deciding his involvement didn't matter much as long as Khushi has only a place for him in her heart, any plans of Anjali or anyone else won't be successful at all. He isn't going to disclose anything about them before talking to her anyway which reminded him of her not talking to him currently.

Arnav - Nothing. You can ask her. I can't decide anything for her.

Anjali - But I didn't ask you to decide anything for her. I'm just asking you to choose one of these girls to marry so you and NK bhai can have a double wedding at the same mandap. You only reacted to her.

He gawked at her flabbergasted. She almost got him. So what could help the ASR better than his ever-so-famous attitude.

Arnav - Whatever Di. I'll leave now.

He hastily grabbed his working bag and walked out of the room escaping any further conversation with his sister.

Anjali stuck her lip out like a kid who didn't get the toy she wanted. Why was her Chote so difficult? She wanted nothing more but for him to admit his feelings for Khushi.

Aman Mathur craved for nothing but some peaceful working. Yes. Working. While most of the people imagined a beach or hills vacation for relaxation, this workaholic needed a peaceful and harmonious workplace to relax. And then at the end of the day he'd treat himself with a glass of Scotch.

Unfortunately such days were less in his fate. The office was everything else but peaceful and harmonious when his Boss behaved like a PMsing teenager. And today was such a day.

Ever since Arnav Singh Raizada entered the building he had been making this place a living hell for all the employees including Aman Mathur.

He could guess Miss Gupta being the reason for his employer's bad mood. Even when everything was fine between them nothing was fine between them, he thought.

So in order to please ASR and change his mood, Aman preponed the completion of an errand given by his grumpy boss. He really hoped it'd get things right between them and he could get his peace of mind back.

Aman - Is it just like you wanted it to be?

Arnav stared into the box in his hand and gave a slight nod of his head. Closing the box he kept it on the table and looked up at Aman.

Arnav - Hadn't I asked you to get it next week?

Aman - Yes you did. But you know me, I like to complete my tasks as soon as possible.

Arnav thinned his lips in agreement and placed the box into his bag. He dropped himself on the master chair and closed his eyes leaning his head back. She was in his mind all the time. She hadn't picked up any of his calls and it took him all of his patience to not drive to Laxmi Nagar right now.

Aman - Trouble in paradise?

Arnav opened his eyes and saw Aman still standing there, watching him carefully. His stern face not giving away any hints of pity or sympathy towards him.

Arnav - My personal life is none of your business.

Aman took a step forward with a crooked smile now enhancing his features.

Aman - Who are you fooling? You very well know your personal life has never been personal in front of me.

Arnav hated to admit it but he knew his employee was right. Aman knew each and every detail of his life. And this was the exact reason why they never reached media. Mathur made sure of that.

Aman - Since when does Miss Gupta work at Café Rose?

Arnav darted his chocolate brown orbs in his direction, almost startled.

Arnav - She works at Cafe Rose?

Aman - You didn't know?

There wasn't any reaction to his question, except of a frown. His query was met with bafflement.

Aman - Earlier when I picked it up, I passed the street and saw her there in that coffee shop. She was wearing their apron and serving.

He had even considered dropping in and saying hello but eventually cancelled the plan as he got ASR's call.

Arnav - Are you sure it was her?

Aman - A skinny tall waitress in traditionals fitted with pom poms and a long plait? Pretty sure!

And next he saw his enraged Boss hurriedly walk past him without evening uttering a word. Although that wasn't needed. Aman was completely in knowledge to his destination.

Finally he'll have some peace at office, for a while at least.

Khushi carried a tray with two coffees to the couple sitting at the window. She served them with a smile and walked further to another table. Smiling was mandatory here, even if she was going through hell inside and each of her nerves jumping in worry. She was told to smile.

Khushi - Your order, please.

She wrote it down on a notepad and moved to the counter. But suddenly she felt something, someone. Her heartbeat fastened in reaction to the familiar feeling and she turned to clear her doubt.

Arnavji.

She gulped as he glared right into her hazel eyes. If looks could kill she'd be dead meat now.

And as he progressed towards her, she broke in panic and immediately went behind the counter. She pinned the order there at the board and turned in hesitance. He had taken place at a table and was staring right at her. She sighed. She can't avoid him now that he's sitting right there and clearly refusing to place his order to someone else.

Khushi weaponed herself with her notepad and pen again, ready to face the lion. She stalked in his direction and simpered uncertain as she faced him.

She waited for him to explode but was met with silence. She wasn't surprised. Maybe he was expecting her to explain her behaviour on her own without him having to question.

Khushi - I know what you're thinking.

Arnav - What am I thinking?

She fathomed the sarcasm in his tone. He was pissed and she very well knew why. She'd dodged his calls the whole day yesterday and today. She didn't talk to him or inform him about her new job. And she didn't have any great reason for that either. Except of embarrassment and the intention to step back from the relationship.

Arnav - I'm waiting.

She blinked in response and looked behind once at the manager. She wasn't allowed to chit chat with customers while working. But thankfully the manager wasn't looking here. He seemed busy with his phone.

So taking a deep breath, she finally spoke.

Khushi - I know I couldn't attend your phone calls and didn't inform you about my new job.

Arnav - You know? Good. Now tell me why?

His faked amusement with an undertone of mocking wasn't helping her at all. She couldn't tell him the truth, not here at least. It'll break his heart and she couldn't do that here.

Khushi - I started yesterday and I got so busy. Didn't get any time to attend your calls. I'm sorry.

She was lying. She couldn't look into his eyes. But he let it be. She was avoiding him, he'll squeeze the truth out of her. But the time and place wasn't right for that.

Arnav - And why are you working here? You know you could have worked at AR too!

Before she could answer, Khushi was called by the manager. She knew why, so held her pad and pen up to note something down.

Khushi - I can't talk. I have to take order and serve. I'll get you a coffee.

Arnav - Ask for a break. Ten minutes.

She was to deny but one look at him and she changed her mind. He wasn't in a no nonsense mood. So giving him a nod she talked to the manager pleading for her break to be preponed. Arnav had his eyes on her as she brought some orders to people on their tables and then approached him with a tray.

Khushi - Black coffee.

She sat down opposite to him with her face hung low. But his tight voice provoked her to look up.

Arnav - Answer me Khushi!

He bore his eyes into hers in not so friendly manner. She considered escaping to other tables but she had already taken a break. Besides she knew him well enough in the meanwhile. He's not in a hurry to leave. Not without an answer. So she provided him the half truth.

Khushi - Yes I know I could have worked at AR but I don't want to work with you.
