Chapter 2

Shit. The party is today and, naturally, I have no fucking outfits. Why do I lack clothes? To be honest, I find myself quite attractive. So, why the heck can't I find anything good that suits me? Moreover, I hate borrowing stuff, whatever it is, as I can't afford buying a new outfit last-minute.

To make matters worse, my phone is ringing. Shit. Not Nathalie. Why the heck does she have to disturb me? I mean, Nathalie and I have never dated, but she wishes we had, which, anyway, bothers me as I never liked her that much as a person. I find her too clingy, possessive, overbearing and also picky. Yeah, picky. It's always her choice: you either do what she asks you to do, or else you're screwed forever, which it's not what you expect from a girl.

I pick it up, only to regret it. It doesn't seem as she's happy. "Here you are. By the way, bear in mind that I'm pissed by your attitude. You should've called me." Gosh, why doesn't she just take a hike? Her behavior is bothering me as much as the thought of any of those snarky vipers otherwise known as exes.

"Listen, Nathalie, I'm not here to pick an argument. Please stop behaving like that and leave me alone. I'm supposed to get ready for the party."

Upon hearing my answer, she comments, "Huh. In that case, I really hope not to see you at all. Bye." Wow. She's being as bitchy as hell. I mean, she definitely could use some friends and a decent boyfriend, but who would even bother paying attention to her?

Oh, never mind. I must get ready for the worst nightmare of my life. Huh. Again, never mind.

***

The only people present, at the moment, in the house, apart from the host, are Layann and Shawn, her boyfriend. The two of them are making out without even giving a fuck of the fact that people are staring at them disapprovingly. Anyway, the more those snarky and nosy people stare at them, the less they care about it and the more they go on making out. Moreover, a quick glare of mine causes all of them to disappear back to where they came from.

More and more people are coming inside, causing me to become increasingly nervous, which Shawn notices and takes it as a chance to mock me. However, this doesn't seem to work as Layann is frowning at him, before reminding him to be nicer. At least, she's not being too harsh to me.

As of now, it's almost 10pm, yet there are so few people inside. Wasn't the party supposed to start at 9? Why is everyone late? Oh, come on, Bev, you forgot Rule #6 of parties: cool kids are always late!

Only three more guys, two boys and a girl, have just arrived. The girl is stuck at one of the boys' left arm like glue. The lights are so confusing that, at first, I fail to recognize their faces, but then I immediately remember that Diesel told me about a couple of hours ago that he would bring a girl with himself.

Oh my God! Has Diesel already got a girlfriend, possibly a long-lasting one? Why do my relationships always have to fail? What's wrong with me?

Anyway, the girl must be his age or, at most, a couple of years older than him. Why hasn't he introduced her to me yet? Oh, never mind. It's his life. Who am I to interfere?

Never mind. They head to the center of the room and start dancing, leaning closer to each other and making me recall the moments where I used to dance with either Caylah or Bridget, with them constantly berating me every time I got a step wrong.

Meanwhile, I see more and more people entering the house. Guys and girls are literally invading this place. I don't recognize many faces, to be honest, but among those there are Layann's friends. I remember her once mentioning that she spends most of her spare time with them when she's not with Shawn. She also said that she has two friends, right? Though, I see three girls around them.

I know the blonde one, Leeann. (Why she and Layann have so similar names is not my business. After all, who am I to judge them for that?) I also know Jaycee, the one with fair hair and the tendency to dye and highlight it a lot, other than wear extravagant clothes. Tonight is no exception: she's wearing a short, long-sleeved animalier dress and killer heels. I mean, why should she dress like that? That freaking dress doesn't suit her at all. Not that Leeann's crop top and ridiculously tight white trousers make her look any better, though.

Okay, I should stop criticizing Jaycee's and Leeann's outfits and rather focus on the dark-skinned, black-haired girl who's standing next to Layann, laughing softly and chit-chatting with her. Well, she's not exactly gorgeous, and I'm not really a fan of her dress. (Oh, God, since when have I turned into a fashion guru? I know nothing about fashion!) I mean, I love how it highlights her curves, but it's a little too... how can I say... provocative, maybe...

Still, the part of her that is catching my attention the most is her eyes. Goddamn, those flashy eyes! I don't know why, but I'm feeling blinded. She's blinking at me. Now I don't know what to do anymore. She's noticing that I'm staring at her like an idiot, which prompts her to turn back to Layann and whisper something in her ear. I recognize when someone is backtalking about me, so I try to step back and mingle in the growing crowd - more and more people are joining the party as of now, much to my distress - but I'm stopped by someone grabbing my left arm. I turn, only to see Leeann.

She's chuckling and smirking, much to my dismay. "Oh, Bevin, why did you leave? We just wanted to hang out a little bit together. Come." She's literally dragging me back to where Layann and the others are, still laughing and muttering something incomprehensible.

"Oh, Bev, I was wondering why you'd leave," says Layann, earning nothing but a frown from me. I clear my throat, hoping that she understands why I left them behind abruptly, but she doesn't pay much attention to me.

Instead, she points at the girl with the red dress and gets her to step forward. Our looks are meeting again. Why does she have to blink? Now, I won't understand anything!

"Bevin," it's still Layann talking, "this is Aalaezah Palin, another friend of mine. I guess you've never met, right?"

We both shake our heads. Jaycee and Leeann are still chuckling and Jaycee is occasionally pointing at the girl named Aalaezah, but mostly at me.

"Aalaezah, right? My name is Bevin Brenlie." I stutter. "Nice to meet you." Again, I overhear Layann and her friends laughing, this time louder and louder.

In order not to be bothered by them, I extend a hand. Aalaezah shakes it with such a power that it's sore now. Ouch.
