Martha's Perspective
November 9th, 2019
It was a dare. I was dancing by the fire—my blonde hair in a braid and my outfit cute as ever—when I was shoved.
My hair caught fire and so did my outfit.
I wasn't cute anymore.

Peeling open my eyes, I found I was in a hospital.
"What's going on?" I asked the nurse who had yet to notice me waking.
"Oh, dear! You're awake!" The nurse clapped her plump hands together.
"Answer my question, imbecile."
"Ah, dear, you were badly burned."
"Oh... but nothing hurts."
"That's what happens when you get a third degree burn!" This nurse was too cheerful for my taste. "Everything waist-up went up in flames."
I felt sick. "Has anyone come to visit me?" There was a clear lack of 'get well soon' cards and balloons.
"Your parents, of course. They'll be happy to know you've woken up. Let me go get them now-"
"No, wait. Has anyone from school come?"
"I'm sorry, dear. No." The nurse opened the door. "Check your phone, I'm sure they would have called if they couldn't leave the school," she said before wobbling away.
Grabbing my phone off the table near my cot, I scrolled through every single social app I had...
Enrico had sent me a snap...
That was it.

Scrolling through a million Instagram posts, I laid alone in my bed. The days of self-isolation at school were over for everyone but me.
