Chapter One: Florrie
November 2nd, 2019
Everyone at Foxcroft had gone absolutely crazy when the yeti was spotted. Nobody could stop talking about it! Yeti this, yeti that. I can't blame them, nothing ever happens at our school. Finally, something exciting! But that was a few weeks ago, and we hadn't seen one since, even though some of the boys went out hunting. Everyone was pretty disappointed. I was hoping to get a photo with it before we went home for Christmas in a few weeks.
Tomlin said that was a good thing. He said that they could be violent, or carry a virus or something. I still wanted my photo.
Tomlin had been my best friend for years. Ever since I started going to Foxcroft three years ago. He was super smart, which worked out well for me, because sometimes I have trouble thinking things through...
At least I'm self-aware.
The only issue with Tomlin is when he worries, he worries a lot. Once, I went to his room to hang out and he flipped out just because it was past six.
"We can't be in eachothers dorms past six!" Tomlin had said, tugging anxiously at his hair. "I can't risk my scholarship! You've got to go."
"This is our last year. It doesn't really matter."
"YES IT DOES!"
Tomlin was endlessly lame. He would never sneak out, never date, never drink or smoke or vape or whatever! But he was my only steady friend.
"I don't understand why you hang out with him," Che said, applying mascara with a glass of wine resting on her vanity. Most dorms only came with desks, but Che had gotten her sugar daddy to buy her a vanity freshman year.
"He's my friend," I said with a shrug.
"He's a loser."
Well, she wasn't wrong, but still.
"He can be fun sometimes," I tried to explain. He was really good at board games, and was fun to play video games with. It would be more fun if he would join in our shenanigans though...
Che took a sip of her wine. She did this so that, when she showed up to the party, she'd already be a little drunk. "Whatever."
"Should we go?"
"Yeah. Yeah." Che got up and we left her dorm, into the dimly lit hallway of girls' dorms. Unlike the boys' dorms, the girls' were attached to the actual school building. That made it harder to sneak out, but not impossible.
Instead of going down the hall into the girls' common room, Che and I went to my dorm, which was a two-person dorm and had a big window. Big enough for someone to slip through.
"Augh! Cold!" Che whined, her calves slicing right through the snow outside the dorms. The snow was a foot or so off from being level to the window.
"Make room," I said before stepping out. The cold snow embraced me from the knees down and I wished my boots had matched with my dress. "God, it's cold as hell," I chattered.
"That's an oxymoron," Che muttered, already shuffling through the snow toward the gates.
"You're a moron," I said, slamming down my window before following her path through the icy white.

Some student, I didn't know who, lived by the school and he was the one hosting the party. I had been to the grand house before, but it took my breath away each time. Yes, my family was also sickeningly wealthy... but this house was extraordinary!
Che and I made our way to the front, where we knocked on a door bigger than both of us combined and doubled. I went up to push it open, but it wouldn't budge. I kept pushing on the door, maybe it was just stuck? Then Che went up and pulled on the door, and it popped open.
"Stupid," Che sneered at me. I just scoffed. It wasn't my fault I thought it was a push door. Last time I was at this particular mansion, I had a date to open the door for me.
I grumbled as I walked into the party, but my mood quickly sweetened as I took in the entrance hall. Tinsel wrapped around the stair rails and silver snowflakes seemed to float, not seeming to at all connected to the high ceiling. A tall evergreen towered in between the split grand staircase. I could already hear the music from whichever room the majority of the party was taking place.
"Welcome in," some girl said from the bottom of the stairs. She swayed from side to side as she walked towards me. "I hope you enjoy the party; it's up the stairs to the left. Big room. Can't miss it... Lots of drinks." She said with a wink, her words slurring together slightly.
"Sounds delightful," Che said, a grin spreading across her symmetrical face.
"Do you know her?" I asked Che as we made our way upstairs.
Turning left, down a great hallway, Che shook her head. We followed the sound of the music for a minute or two, until we found the party.
Fifty rich kids all piled together in one room. Music blared from the speakers sprinkled around the room. There was a bar, unmanned, on a slightly raised platform.
"Martha!" Che suddenly screamed before rushing into the crowd.
"Che! Hi!" a girl, Martha, screamed back. "You look awful! Where did you get your dress? Target?" Her eyes widened as Che and I got closer. "Goodwill?"
"No, damn you."
"Mine's Dior."
"No wonder you look like an old lady!" Che chirped with laughter and Martha joined in. But I wasn't watching them anymore.
While I had made my way through the crowd, in Che's wake, I had spotted someone. Some I absolutely had to talk to.
