Chapter Eleven: Harvey
November 29th, 2019
We drove all the way to the dorms in silence. I just couldn't think of anything to say. Why had I yelled at her? She was kissing some guy, sure, but she was right...
We were never officially dating, though I wished we were.
This time I would let her explain what happened, and we would go from there. No yelling, at least from me, and no getting mad. Even if the explanation was that she had just wanted to kiss him. Upset and sad maybe, but not angry.
"Okay, we're here," I announced, parking the car in front of the building. Instead of responding she just opened the car door and got out. I followed suit, letting Florrie lead us to her room. She looked nervous, did she think I would get mad again? I sighed and tried to think about something else. It didn't take long for us to get to her door, but it did take a good minute for her to unlock the door
"Come on in," Florrie mumbled as she entered the room. Not meeting my eyes, she slowly sat down onto her bed. I sat on the bare mattress on the stripped bed across from her.
"So... what happened?"
She just closed her eyes and breathed for a moment, like she was trying to ground herself, or maybe calm down.
"Um, well, at first I had went to hang out with this group because Che told me to. I wasn't planning to stay long, but they were talking about Martha."
I didn't understand just yet why this was important. The confusion must have shown on my face, because she quickly began again.
"I thought they were being nice at first, but they were just making fun of her. Lucas, the guy who was on the balcony, tried to defend her. Turns out they used to date."
Is that why she kissed him? To thank him for defending that girl? That's weird...
"Right after that he grabbed my arm and dragged me up to the balcony. I thought he hadn't been drinking, but turns out he had. He mistook me for Martha and he..." Florrie trailed off. She looked like she was gonna cry, but she didn't. "He kissed me. I didn't wanna kiss him, but he pinned me to him. I had to push him off."
Her big eyes lifted to meet mine for the barest second. They were filled with sadness and I knew without a doubt her story was true.
No words came out of my mouth, the shock keping anything I would say logged in my mind. I thought I was ashamed before, now I just wanted to drop out of Foxcroft and never come back to the mountain. He had forced himself on her, and what did I do? I yelled at her for it. It was clear she was upset when she was leaving, I should have known something was wrong.
Something inside—deep inside—was glad Lucas had forced the kiss from her. Not because it hurt her, but because it meant she hadn't wanted to kiss him. Now, as far as I knew, she didn't have eyes for anyone else.
"I'm so sorry," I said. "It was terrible for me to yell at you for doing something you did against your will."
"Yeah." Hot tears poured from her eyes. "I just- I just wanted my first kiss to be with someone... someone I really liked."
"You haven't had your first kiss yet?"
"No. Surprise, surprise." Her hand swiped at her cheek, attempting to rub away the flowing water.
Getting up, I moved to sit down beside her. As gently as I could, I rubbed my thumb under her eye, drying her tears.
I knew what I wanted. Leaning in, I stole a kiss from Florrie's soft lips. Vanilla filled my nose and she moved closer, agreeing with the kiss. Her knee crept onto mine and soon she was half-sitting on me.
"This would have been a perfect first kiss..."

Saturday morning, I got two texts from Florrie:
i feel awful today
i think i got the flu or something
I muttered a curse. It could just be the flu, it was that time of year. But it could also be the new disease.
Go to the nurse's and tell her your symptoms," I texted. "You might have the new disease and I don't want you to risk getting seriously ill."
Of course the disease was making its rounds again. No one had found the true root or how the disease spread. Luckily, we had a cure.
In reply, she sent three messages: kk, i will
maybe you should go 2
we have been hanging out alot
It wasn't a terrible idea. Even though I didn't have symptoms yet.
How about we go together?
It was a good excuse to see her, even if I was fine and didn't need the cure.
sounds great!!! tmr at 12:30?
See you tomorrow. I replied.

Later that day, Saturday, my eyes began to water.
I ate a taki and then my nose evaporated.
It's not that I have a fever, but sure as hell is a dream.
I'm definitely sick.
