Sakura's POV
The twins offered to drive me home because we live in the same direction, just they live a little farther. I didn't object to the ride, it was going to rain. We got in the car right as it started to drip. It was kind of an awkward drive back home. Silent with just the rain as noise. It became pitch black. There were no street lights in my neighborhood. "Uh... C-Can we turn on a light?" I said and shivered. I brought my legs up to my chest and hugged them.
"Why? Are you afraid of the dark?" Hikaru said, I could tell by his voice. I shuddered again as we went over a bump in the road. A hand touch my left shoulder and I shouted. Out of instinct I grabbed the person to my right. We finally passed a streetlight and I looked up to see I was hugging Hikaru. My face went hot and I immediately let go.
"I-I... I'm sorry...." I stuttered. A tear slipped down my cheek. I didn't mean to do that... I swear... "I didn't mean to..." The car came to a stop. We were in front of my apartment.
"Hey, don't worry... look at me." Hikaru took my chin and raised it. "Call or text me if you need anything." He handed me a piece of paper that had a phone number on it. Actually, it had two. His and Kaoru's.
"Wha-?" I squeaked. Hikaru's number was on top and Kaoru's on bottom. They were labeled. Kaoru opened his door and got out to let me out. I scooted out. I know I just met them and all, but I did NOT see them as the caring type.
"Hey, uh, what are... you... doing this weekend...?" He managed to say. I looked up at him, even more surprised that he asked me that than when his brother gave me their numbers. Raindrops dripped and splashed onto my lenses as we stood there.
"Uh... working. Like I do every weekend." I said and looked at the ground.
"Where do you work?" He asked.
"Family business." I begin to walk towards my apartment with my head down.
"Why do you look so gloomy?" Hikaru said.
"I'm... well, no reason... goodnight twins." I said and waved. He stared at me for a second then got back in the car. He didn't even seem to care if he was getting wet. They sat there and waited until I got inside before they drove off. Inside, I put my back to the door and slid down onto the floor. I sat there for twenty minutes thinking about what I did before I finally got up and went to my sister's room to tell her I was home. When I reached the door I peeked my head around the corner, only to see she was already asleep.
Her college books were all open on her bed, her computer was on, pencils and papers everywhere, her drawers were wide open and the things pushed to the sides like she was looking for something. She was a mess, but she worked hard to keep us both fed. She did everything in her power to keep a roof over our heads. And I respected her for that. But for a sister, she was still annoying.
I remembered long ago when I was about 8 almost everyone in our family went on vacation to Japan because we lived in France, but their plane crash landed in the middle of the ocean. Our grandmother took us in. She lived in France. I cried. "So we won't see mommy or daddy anymore?"
"No. Mommy and daddy have to go to sleep for a long time so that one day when you sleep forever, they are there, ready for you." She spoke in the sweetest voice back then. But now, I could no longer hear it.
I cleared her bed and put her books and papers and laptop in a neat pile on her desk and pulled the covers over her. "Goodnight Tira. I love you." I whispered as I turned off the lights.
"I love you too..." She whispered back. I smiled and walked down the hall to my bedroom. While I was changing out of my sopping wet clothes, I took out the numbers that were in my jacket pocket. I stared at them for a solid minute before sending Hikaru and Kaoru a text, then went straight to bed.
------------
I woke up in the middle of the night to my phone buzzing. I looked at my nightstand and saw I had gotten a text. I groaned. Who is texting me in the middle of the night!? I picked it up and turned down the brightness so I could see. It was Hikaru. 'Are u ok?' I squinted to make sure I was reading that correctly. He's checking up on me...?
'Yeah. Fine. Why do u ask?' I texted back. It took a few minutes, but he texted back.
'You just looked sad...' I was really confused. Then my phone actually rang. It was Hikaru. Oh god... What now? I picked up. "Uh... What are you doing calling me in the middle of the night?!" I whispered.
"I was worried. Are you okay?" He said. I could tell it was not Hikaru. Kaoru was talking.
"Kaoru. I know it's you. Please stop worrying. I'm fine." I said with a chuckle. The other side went silent for a moment.
"H-how can you tell it's me...? We're talking over the phone..." He stuttered.
"I just can. Your voice is a little bit deeper than your brother's." I said and smiled, even though I knew he couldn't see. But I had a feeling he was smiling too. "Hey, you should probably get some sleep. Hikaru's going to question why you're so tired tomorrow." I said with a yawn.
"Uh, Sakura?" He said right before I hung up.
"What? Make it quick, I'm tired." I said. I rubbed my eye.
"... Nevermind. See you tomorrow." The phone went dead. He hung up and I just looked at the screen. Goodnight Kaoru.
