Tip #2: Writing Your Story

So first, and foremost, let me say that this is your story!

Before I get into details about plot and grammar and all that jazz, remember that you are the one writing your story. It is yours and only yours!

That being said, here are my sub-tips:

Write what you want!

When it comes to picking a story to write, you'll here people tell you many things. There are people out there who will tell you to not be cliche and pick something really original. Then, there are other people who will tell you to write what's currently popular, because that's what people want to read.

But do what you want to do. If you want to be cliche, do it! Write about the vampire who falls in love with the werewolf! If you want to be original, do it! Write about your own fantasy world!

Just remember that this is your story. You want to enjoy writing it. If you hate what you're writing about, it will come off like that in your writing. You won't care for it much, and you won't put in the effort. Your story just won't be as great as you want it to be.

Keep writing!

Let me tell you that this is the most important tip out of any tip you will every receive about writing. Never. Give. Up.

My most popular story is my only one that is finished. My other ones don't receive nearly as much fame as that one. Why? Because I continued to write. When people go to read a new story, they will look at the last time you updated, and how many parts it has.

No one will read a story that has 2 chapters, or that was last updated several months ago. There will not be much to read! So just keep writing.

By continuing to write, you will have more chapters. This will give you more stats. For example, Let's say I want 100 reads. I can either get 50 people to read my 2 part story, or get 10 people to read my 10 part story. Which is easier?

Also, by continuing to write, this will keep your story on the what's new list, giving it more exposure. When I was writing poetry, I would update every day or every other day for a good 2 weeks. That book of poetry ended up ranking #68 in poetry.

Keep a schedule for updates.

Now, a daily schedule is pretty hard to stick to. Unless you can write multiple chapters at a time and post them later, it's nearly impossible. It was hard for me to stick to a twice a week schedule. Most good authors post once or twice a week.

So how do you know when to update?

It decides on you and how fast you can write well written chapters. Just remember that you don't want to post too often, because you want to leave your readers waiting and wanting more. However, you don't want them to wait so long and get bored. Try to update every 3-7 days.

Chapter lengths

Again, you want these to be just right. Not too short, not too long. If they're too short, readers will get bored. If they're too long, readers will get lost. You want a happy medium.

For my most successful story, I started out with about 1,200 word chapters. But the end of the book, they were closer to 2,000. With my new story, I strive to keep them at least 1,800 words, and no longer than 2,500.

Also, remember how I mentioned that thing about more chapter parts means more stats? If your chapters are really long, you won't get as many! If you find one chapter is really long (this sometimes happens towards the end of the book), break it in to two parts. This can either mean 2 chapters, or one chapter with two parts.

Spelling and grammar

NO ONE WILL READ YOUR BOOK IF YOU HAVE CRAPPY GRAMMAR.

I'm sorry, but it's true.

No 1 wil read ur book if u talk in txt.

NO ONE LIKES ALL CAPS

If you don't now how two spel or use the write form of a word (their, there, they're, you, you're, etc.) peeple wont reed it.

Narrator: Do you like it when I talk like it's a script?

Reader: No!

Narrator: Are you sure?

Reader: Yes!

...

Do you see how annoying each of those were? It made me cringe just to write them. Don't talk like that. Please. Pay attention in English class.

Dot your t's, cross your i's. Use the right punctuation. Know the difference between there, their, and they're. Or your and you're. And to, too, and two. Please. It's not that difficult.

And if it is, use spell check. Of course, the occasional typo will happen. But most people will read over it when it happens every now and then. And if you just suck at grammar, find an editor! They're all over the clubs.

So that's about it for this part. If you want me to elaborate on anything, or add a certain tip, comment! The point of this is to help you!
