Chapter 1

"So," Aria starts, "How do you do it?"

"Do what?" I ask, confused.

She sighs and rolls her eyes. "Keep yourself from changing color, Cassian." The two other girls sitting next to her turn around and nod. Great. Now everyone is getting involved.

"I don't know," I say. "Do you change color?"

Aria looks at me in disbelief. "Of course I change color! Everyone does."

"Well, except you," The girl sitting next to her, Seraphina mumbles.

"Everyone looks gray to me." I whisper, turning back to the classwork we're supposed to be doing. Math. Ugh. As boring as the world around me, dull shades of gray and black.

Aria looks at me weird, then goes back to talking to Sera instead of doing her work.

"Aria! Sera!" Our teacher, Mrs. Hawthorne says, "Get back on task."

"Sorry," They say in unison, but when Mrs. Hawthorne turns around, they start giggling and passing notes. I sigh. Girls.

I don't get it. How does Cassian stop himself from changing color? He has emotions, I know it, but he stays gray the entire day, never changing. It makes me angry even thinking about it. Oh no. Not this again.

I glance down at my hands and they are bright red with anger. Calm down Aria, calm down. They changed back to a calm silvery color, our normal color. That's better.

I glance down at my worksheet, my anger rising again. I hate math so much. What should I do? How does it work? UGHHHHHH.

"Aria?" Mrs. Hawthorne begins. "Are you ok?"

I look up at Mrs. Hawthorne's lavender aura, the color that symbolizes concern. She's so nosey.

"I'm fine, Mrs. Hawthorne." I say, rolling my eyes. Her aura changes again, to a deep blue, before she quickly fixes it to the normal silver. "Ok." She says. "Just let me know if I can do anything to help you." and then she walks away.

I glance back down at my worksheet, and my hands have turned to dark brown. The color of shame. As I sigh again and try to focus and turn them back to silver, Sera passes me a note.

Do you get any of this? It asks. I look up at her, and she is a muted green. Boredom.

No. I reply. I don't want to be doing this. As I write, my hands begin to turn the soft pink that represents relief. So I'm not alone in this feeling.
