twenty

Troy sat cross legged on the freshly-cut blades of grass. It was well past midnight. The rest of the ranch was asleep.

Jeremiah had gotten angry at him once again. He pushed Troy around a few times but mostly just yelled tonight. Part of Troy was thankful for that, but it still hurt him mentally. He tried to not let words get to him, but it was too difficult; especially when they came from his own father. He felt defeated.

Troy sighed as he noticed the cool air the night brought along with it. This was just what he needed. He would just stick it out and deal with it, but why would he do that when he had a better option? He stood and began to make his way toward his destination with only one person on his mind; Evelyn.

He wasn't in any mood to tease her, setting her off would only lead to a whole new set of problems. He just wanted to, somehow, get in her room and sleep if his body allowed it.

He made sure to take careful steps as he approached the front porch. By no means did he want to alert Evelyn's father about somebody entering the house in the middle of the he he winced at the sound of a slight creak in the worn out wood beneath his feet. His hand reached for the door handle and he said a silent prayer. To his delight, the door clicked open. He wouldn't have to get in the hard way.

As he waltzed through the living room, he thought over his bizarre situation. Not even a month prior to this, he had never said one word to evelyn. Now here he was, breaking into her house to sleep in her bed. It was quite laughable, but he knew his reasons.

He sighed in pure relief as he reached her bedroom door without getting caught. When he opened it, he was greeted with the sight of a fast asleep Evelyn. The pale moonlight slipped through the blinds and lit up her almost untanned face. She was peaceful, dreaming about who knows what. There was one issue though... she was laying right in the middle of the bed. Her limbs were sprawled out, so Troy couldn't even slip in beside her. He couldn't walk around the bed either because it was pushed up against the wall. He knew he was not sleeping on the floor, so there was only one other thing he could do. He was going to move her.

He hovered above her, gently grabbing her hand. he made sure to make insanely subtle movements. If Evelyn were to wake up in this moment, it would be incredibly uncomfortable. A literal new level of uncomfortable and a little scary on her part. He silently celebrated after he successfully draped her left arm over her stomach. The only thing he really had left to move was her leg, so he did just he he pushed her mostly uncovered leg as far as it would go and prayed that she wouldn't wake up. How would he even explain himself if she woke up in this very moment?

He looked down to see how much he had accomplished and was quickly met with disappointment. Her body was still placed in a weird way, and there was no way for him to move her again without waking her. He couldn't just lay down because he would have to press against her, and that was uncomfortable in itself. Troy had no other choice.

His hands slipped under her back and her waist. He tried to slide her body over as gently and softly as possible, but that definitely wasn't the easiest thing to do with her being fully unconscious. Evelyn always found a way to be so difficult, even in her sleep. He thought he was doing a pretty good job until he jolted on accident, causing the girl to stir. His shoulders released all their tension when he realized it didn't wake her.

Troy threw his head back in relief when he finally got Evelyn to "her side" of the bed. He sat down as carefully as possible.

It wasn't careful enough, though, because Evelyn's eyes shot open. She looked a little clueless for a second, but quickly realized what was going on, and who was in her bed with her. She sat up. "What are you doing here?" she asked with tired eyes and furrowed eyebrows.

Troy shut his own eyes and cursed under his breath. This was just his luck. "Well, I'm in your bed."

     "Yeah, I see that."

"Well, if you don't mind, I am about to fall asleep. sweet dreams. Love you, Ev," Troy dismissed, turning his body away from hers.

"Uh— I don't think so!" her hands gripped his side pulling him onto his back. "You can't just come in here at-"

     "One in the morning."

"One in the morning," she emphasized, "and act like it's nothing."

"Watch me," he tried turning away once again, but once again, her hand prevented him from doing so. She rested it on his stomach so that he (hopefully) wouldn't turn away again.

Evelyn stared at him with a blank expression. "Why Troy? Why do you do this?"

"Because," he reached over to her grab her shoulders, "sleepovers are fun. This is what best friends do, you know."

"Not when it's a Tuesday morning and I have a history exam in a couple hours!" Evelyn rubbed her tired hands over her face. This was the last thing she needed on a night where rest was crucial to her future.

"Nobody told you to wake up," Troy shrugged, his eyelids starting to feel heavy.

"It's kind of hard not to when you have a freak getting in your bed in the middle of the night!" she dramatically spoke with her hands.

Troy shook his head. "Shh," he placed a finger over Evelyn's swollen lips. This act obviously bothered her, and Troy took note of it. "Sleep. Don't act like we haven't done this before."

Evelyn wrapped her fingers around his wrist and pulled it away from her. "You didn't catch me off guard those times, though. This is just weird."

"Ev, you're the one who's making it weird. If you don't want it to be weird, don't make it weird. We're just two friends, best friends actually, having a sleepover."

"Oh my god. Whatever," Evelyn gave up and laid back down, trying to scoot as far away from him as possible. He didn't let her. His hands wrapped around her waist, pulling her body impossibly close to his. "What are you doing?" she spat.

"You're gonna fall off the bed if you sleep like that. Don't worry, I'll protect you here."

"Troy," she paused, turning over to face him. At this hour, she didn't care about the act she was trying to put up for him. "I really cannot stand you."

     "Whatever you say, Ev."
