Chapter 1
Hey everyone! This is my first ever fanfiction and it is done based on the Ranger's Apprentice book series. You can expect weekly updates hopefully, but I can't make any promises! I hope you guys enjoy so without further ado, the story!!
Disclaimer: O.K. I lied, I have to do the disclaimer. Although, I doubt anyone would actually believe it, I don't own Ranger's Apprentice or any of its characters or plot lines. That credit goes to the amazingly talented John Flanagan. But, a girl can dream. Now, on with the story!!!!

I sighed. Today was one of the most boring days of my life. It was raining and the championship soccer game had been canceled because of a lightning strike. Right now I was at my friend’s house reading, but it wasn’t a book of my choice. Normally, I would love nothing more in the world than to snuggle up on the couch during a rainstorm, listening to the patter of rain hitting the windows, while reading a good book. But, my mom had forced me to read War and Peace and it sucked, to put it nicely. Literally, that book is over a 1,000 pages long in fine print!
“Come on Abbey, why can’t I play outside?” My sister whined. In case you’re wondering, I’m Abbey. I have shoulder length dirty blonde hair that frames my face resembling the color of honey, and green eyes with a slight golden haze around the edges that always seem to be sparkling with a hint of mischief and unfound adventures. My sister Gwyn on the other hand has long brown hair, the color of chocolate. She also has warm brown eyes to match, that when given the puppy dog look by them, you just can’t say no.
“Gwyn, it’s raining outside!” I said, sounding as if I had been asked to play outside one too many times. Huffing, she finally walked away. I sighed. I seem to be doing a lot of that lately I thought. Behind me I heard my friend snigger, trying to hold in her laughter.
“Shut up Sophie.” I shot over my back without looking, before I turned to face her. Sophie is my best friend, and we had known each other for as long as I could remember. She was slightly taller than me by a couple inches or so and had long wavy blond hair. Her eyes were a deep brown just like my sister’s which I thought was kind of funny. She and my sister shared more things in common than I did with Gwyn.
As she stopped laughing she finally got to what made her come over to me, “Hey Abbey by the way, I got this book from the library I thought you might like.” Sophie said, “Actually, I’m sure you’ll like it.” She said confidently.
“I can’t I have to read this remember,” I said dully, holding the offending book up for her to see.
“Yeah but your mom isn’t here right now,” Sophie countered, and I realized she did have a point.
“OK, whatever. What’s this book about anyways?” I inquired, finally realizing that no matter how long I read the stupid book like my mom wanted me to, I wasn’t going to finish it.
“It’s about medieval times, 100 or so years after the fall of the Roman Empire,” I immediately perked up at that. I loved reading about fantasy history. Even so I was suspicious because I knew a series exactly in the time period that Sophie had just described.
“And what country would this be in?” I asked accusingly, letting Sophie know that I was on to her.
She smiled at me, “I knew you’d catch on eventually,” I just rolled my eyes. Two sentences of describing was hardly eventually.
“You didn’t answer my question, and that is what country does the book take place in?” I said getting a bit annoyed at my friends antics.
“Ranger’s Apprentice!” she exclaimed. I laughed, I had guessed as much but it was still funny how she had tried to hide it. She of all people should know by now that I knew everything there is to know about Ranger’s Apprentice. I had read that series 13 times as of last year.
“You know me too well. Which one is it?” There were 12 books total in the series, but Sophie had only read 7 of them and I had bugging her about it nonstop for the past 2 years.
“The Ruins of Gorlan!” she proclaimed proudly. I only raised an eyebrow at her, making her burst out laughing. I managed to keep a straight face for all of 2 seconds before I too started laughing.
“Anyways, I thought you could read it out loud. That way it will be for fun because we can do the character’s voices.”
“Well…” I said, reluctant because I didn’t really know how to pronounce half the words, “It sounds cooler when you say it in your head because then you don’t have to worry about if you’re saying it right.”
“Come on Abbey, please!” she whined.
“Now you’re starting to sound like my sister.” I joked. I looked at the puppy dog eyes that bore a distinct resemblance to my sister’s and gave in.
Sighing, I said, “Alright, alright but you’re reading the first chapter.”
“Sure!” Sophie exclaimed happily, “Now ahem, Morgarath, lord of the mountains of rain and night, former Baron of Gorlan in the Kingdom of Araulen, looked out over his bleak, rainswept domain and, for perhaps the thousandth time cursed…”

We had both decided to read half the book and then take a break. We were now on the part where Will had just surprised Gilan on the way to the gathering grounds and the two rangers and the apprentice were riding to the gathering grounds together.
“Come on Abbey, my legs might just fall right off, I’ve been sitting so long,” Sophie groaned. Silently I agreed but had waited for her to say it first.
“Fine with me, but after we get a snack and stretch our legs you start reading again” I said.
“You think I have a problem with reading again?” She asked accusingly, trying and failing to raise one eyebrow like Halt. I laughed at her attempt. Ever since we learned rangers did that we had both immediately started learning. I had picked up the trick faster than her and now could do it easily. Along with that, we had both become proficient with the bow and, although nowhere near ranger standards could blend in with the shadows.
“You do realize that you still can’t do it right, right?” I asked then started laughing again at the phrasing of my sentence.
“Whatever,” she said dismissing it, waving her hand for emphasis. We then got our snack and stretched a bit before settling down comfortably.
“Now, where were we?” She asked herself while picking up the book. As she flipped to the page we were on her eyebrows drew together in a furrow.
“Abbey, look at this.” She said, sounding slightly alarmed. Then she turned the book around so I could see what was on the page. Or more correctly what wasn’t on the page. I looked at it mouth slightly agape.
“Where are the words!?” I exclaimed. Just as I said this the world started to spin and I saw a bright light emanating from the book on the page with no words.
“What’s happening!?” Sophie shouted over a roaring wind that had made itself present, just as I shouted, “What’s going on!?” We looked at each other, the wind causing my hair to whip around my face and neck, and I saw fear and confusion evident on her face as I’m sure the same emotions were clearly visible on my own face. Then, with one final gust of wind everything went black and I couldn’t see or hear anything but I could still feel the strong winds blowing at my face and hair. Then a bright flash of color and light and the wind stopped. This happened for all of 2 seconds, but it was long enough for me to look up and stare directly at a pair of young, brown eyes that were widened in shock. And then, again, everything went black.
