Nightmare
"Daddy!" A little girl exclaimed as she dashed towards a grown man with his arms opened widely for his princess.
"Oh! My sweet little angel! Come here!" He exclaims and the girl hopped onto his arm.
"Did you behave for Mom today?" he asks the little girl.
She bobbed her little head up and down, her chocolate hair tied into a high ponytail bounced as she did.
"Now that's my girl. For that, I have something for you!" He said and took out a box from behind him and presented it to the little girl in his arms.
"Happy Birthday sweet angel." he greeted, his eyes full of love and kindness. The girl in his arms giggled in excitement as she opened the box. Inside lay a necklace that had a wolf pendant. It was a snow white wolf as it stood with full of confidence.
"Waah!" the girl exclaimed and held the jewelry high. "It's beautiful." she voiced out.
"Turn it around darling." Her Father said and watched her obey him and turned the necklace around.
"Sweetest Angel." she read and turned befuddled to her father. "What is this?"
"It's for my one and only sweet angel." he said, squishing her in a tight bear hug. "Now, I want you to always keep it around you at all times, because when Daddy and Mommy's not near to protect you anymore. 'This' will keep you safe, okay?" He instructs and placed the necklace around her neck.
"You must promise Daddy, okay?" he said and held out his pinky finger.
The innocent little girl smiled widely and wrapped her own little pinky around her Father's pinky and swore. "I promise."
After that promise, when the clock said midnight. She heard a soft banter downstairs and she woke up. She trod down the stairs and saw their main door wide open with her Mother and Father arguing with quiet voices.
"No! I won't allow you out there!" Her Mom said.
"Elise, you know I can't do that. I am needed out there. I am still their alpha even if I had stepped down." Her Father reasoned.
Alpha?
"Richter! This is not about your title as alpha! This is about our daughter's well being!" Her Mom retorted and clutched her Father's shirt.
What about me? Why is Mommy and Daddy fighting?
"It'll be fine. I'll be back as soon as possible. Goodbye, my love." He said before he connected their lips softly and walked away.
Her mother collapsed on the doorway as she watched the retreating figure of her husband.
"Come back.. Richter.. Don't leave me and Ella alone." she whispered.
***
"DAD!" a scream escaped Ella's mouth as she called for her Father. She looked around the room and knew she had that nightmare yet again.
Yes, it wasn't just a simple dream. It was a memory she loathed to her core. It was a memory from when her Father left them and never came back.
Ugh! Why now?
I thought to myself and hopped off the bed. It was still dark and the hallways were dimly lit, but still, I kinda got used to this house structure that I was able to find my way.
I wove my way outside and passed through the parlor and saw a figure on the couch. I tiptoed quietly close to it and saw Jem sleeping uncomfortably on the couch, which was obviously too small for him.
I suppressed a giggle with my hand and fixed his pillow and blanket around him. He shifted again and got comfortable before I left him and went outside.
I wandered in the forest that surrounded the house and just let my feet drag me wherever it wants to while my mind got lost in those hurting memories because of my Dad.
**
"Mom?" I called for her as I opened the door to her and Dad's room.
I instantly found her, as she sat not moving from across the window, her eyes glazed and out of it. It was like she was physically there but her mind and soul weren't.
"Mom." I called again and shook her softly.
She craned her head towards me and murmured quietly. "He's gone.. I felt it.. He left us.."
"Mom! He already did! He already left us years back! I was still 11 then! I am 15 now Mom! He's been gone for years! Please! Snap out of it for me, Mom!" I told her as tears spilled out of my eyes and continued to drill facts I've known for years already to her head.
"No.. No.. I can't do this.. He's.. He's gone.." she murmured like a lunatic again and held her head in her palms. "He's gone.. He left us.. He's gone." she kept repeating.
"Mom, please.. please not you too.. You both promised me you wouldn't leave me.. Dad already broke his.. Would you too Mom?" I asked her in between my sobs and held her face to look straight to me. "Are you going to leave me behind too?"
"Oh dearest.. I'm so sorry.. I.. I won't leave you.. I promise. You're all I have left now. Even if I have to lay my life on the line." she murmured and crushed me in her embrace, not that I minded it. Her tight embrace was what told me she was as afraid as I am about losing each other.
**
"Mom.. you promised, right?" I murmured against the dancing trees and howling winds.
I walked further away, not caring whether it was safe or not. Till I arrived into this wide clearing. I stared at it, entranced by the moonlit Moon Flowers blooming gloriously, sporting a pure white color, decorating the field, making it look as if the field itself was glowing.
"Wow." I breathed as I carefully strode closer to the field of flowers. "They're beautiful."
I sat on the center first, looking at the flowers around me bloom by the moon's light before I laid my body down.
The flower's strong yet sweet scent surrounded me and I could finally feel my muscles relax and calm down. All of the bad memories and nightmare I had just minutes ago were washed away by the intoxicating fragrance that filled my nostrils.
I didn't notice that peaceful sleep had finally took me under its wings and I slept with a smile on my face without a care in the world.
I don't know how long I have slept on the field but I woke up with loud voices and heavy footsteps getting closer and closer to where I laid.
I opened my eyes to the blinding light of the morning sun and the closed buds of flowers around me.
"ELLA!" A loud male voice screamed.
"ELLIE!" came a sweet feminine voice.
"ELLA!" and another male voice.
I looked around and found three figures rushing my way. I squinted my eyes, letting them get accustomed to the light before I finally made the worried and horrified looks of Jem, Jenny and Levi.
"Where the hell have you been you little punk?!" Levi first scolded me.
Jem turned to him with a glare and I gave him a look of my own, trying to tell him, I didn't like hearing someone cuss around me.
"Ellie~! What are you doing here?" Jenny rushed to my side and quickly checked me for wounds but before she could complete her scan, a big strong arms wrapped around me pulling me close, keeping me plastered in his chest. Telling me how scared he was when they couldn't find me.
"I thought I'd die of worrying. What are you doing out here?" He asks softly, his body trembling a bit.
"I'm sorry." I apologized as I pat his back and drew small circles, trying to calm him down. "I woke up late at night and I couldn't sleep. I decided to walk around and somehow I ended up here. I'm really sorry I worried you all."
"Please don't do that again. If you're mad about yesterday, I'll be the one to leave. Just.. just don't do that again." Jem continued to say.
I felt so guilty that he still thought about me even though I acted like how I did yesterday. I returned the hug and squeezed him.
"How can I even do that? I'm sorry about yesterday too. There's just something on my mind that night. I didn't mean to act like the way I did." I said against his chest.
"Oh sweetie.. I understand. I know there's a reason behind it and I won't force it out of you." he responded and our roles reversed. Now, he's the one comforting me.
"Ehmm.. Excuse me, but we're still here, you know? Are you forgetting us already?" Jenny's teasing remark flitted in my ears and I instantly pulled away, my face burning.
"It hurts to be ignored, right?" Levi chimed in and softly elbowed Jenny.
"It really does. Ouch!" Jenny dramatically said.
"Jeez! Stop it already, you two!" I exclaimed, as I felt my face couldn't get any redder.
They both stuck out their tongues at me and I finally hit my limit. I chased them down as they ran while laughing. As I gasped for breath, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked up to who it was and saw Jem wearing his infamous smile.
"Need help, sweetie?" He asks, shoving his hands on his jean's pockets.
"You bet I do, Sweetcakes." I responded with my very own endearment. One I usually call my parents with when they start calling me sweet things.
His grin grew wider as he prepared for a dash and crouched beside me.
"You go for Jenny. Leave Levi to me." He whispers, which I barely heard against my heavy breathing.
I nodded in response before I heard him countdown from three and we both took off in a dash.
It was clear that we took them off guard as I heard Jenny squeal when I gained in from her. Levi too was surprised to find Jem hot on his trail.
"HEY! THIS IS NOT FAIR!" I heard him complain.
"Oh no, it's not. It's only fair to have 2 catch 2." Jem reasoned and quickly tackled him to the ground.
I giggled at their sight as they looked like kids rolling around, trying to get the upper-hand against each other.
Jenny was swift and nimble and it was really getting harder and harder to catch her. Hey! I wasn't the best when it came to stamina since I really rarely do run, but still I love the feeling when the breeze hits your face as you zoom around.
Why try to beat them on their territory when you can lure them in yours?
I thought to myself and I snickered in a victory I clearly saw. We were running beside the forest's borders so I turned left and went in the forest, where the trees could hide me.
I was always best at ambush so I used it to my advantage and quietly crept from tree to tree. Jenny glanced behind her and stopped when she couldn't find me.
"Ellie?" she called softly, her breath becoming labored too.
I calmed my own so as to lessen the sound that could give me away. She trailed back where she last saw me as she kept calling my name softly. She turned back to the two boys tickling each other and was about to call them when I chose that same exact moment to pounce on her.
"Gotcha!" I exclaimed when I successfully tackled her to the ground, but not before she let off a shrill squeal.
We gained both of the boy's attention as they looked our way to find us giggling and rolling on the ground.
"You are one hell of an assassin, Ellie!" Jenny complemented and I just nod my head proudly.
I was finally calming down when strong slender fingers suddenly attacked my sides and sent me rolling on the clearing's ground.
"KYAAA! S-Stop!! AHAHAHAHA! STOP IT, I say!" I exclaimed and flailed around.
"AHAHAHA! I finally heard you laugh!" I heard his musical baritone voice say as his figure hovered over me.
I looked up and his handsome smiling face greeted me, making my heart beat frenziedly and my face burning yet again.
Ah! How is this guy able to affect me as much as this? It's an estranged feeling to me.
I said and smiled back as best as I could.
"Just for that?" I asked him when he moved to my side.
"Yep! Just for that." He answered happily like a little boy.
"Well then.. Here's. A. Revenge!" I said and tickled him back.
He rolled around trying to dodge me, which he did so skillfully and he stood back up instantly, racing back to the direction of the house.
"Last one back treats everyone breakfast!" He exclaimed and we all looked at each other before we broke out in a dash.
Oh well, it was decided from the moment the challenge was raised though. I just couldn't keep up with their speed and stamina.
I really need to take note never to challenge them into a sprint again.
I mentally told myself and made them breakfast. The sun was already high up and I'd guess it was near noon already. So basically, our meal would be considered as Brunch.
"Here, you gluttons." I joked with a smile on and passed them their meals while I sat with mine.
"You fud alwehsh cook zeh meash from nah on. (You should always cook the meals from now on.)" Levi commented with his mouth full.
"I appreciate the complement but could you please swallow your food first before you speak?" I told him.
A snort filled the dinning table and a very poorly suppressed chuckle. Levi hurriedly swallowed his food down that he almost choked if not for the water he downed in a mere seconds.
"Sorry." he murmured and went back to his meal.
"Hey.. Don't you think.. it's a little too peaceful?" Jenny murmured softly.
We fell silent after her and thought she was right. It was certainly a little too peaceful. There were no bird calls, no rustling leaves. It was dead silence. And just then, a loud deafening siren blared that sent them all jumping up from their seats and me desperately covered my ears with my hands.
Jem grabbed for my arm as he took one look to Levi and Jenny and nodded at each other, like they instantly understood what he wants to say and he bolts upstairs.
In less than 10 seconds I was already on the bed I always occupy as he set me down softly. He held both of my hands in his big warm ones and stares straight in my orbs, looking more serious than I always saw him.
"Ella, I need you to listen to me carefully, okay?" He started and I nod in response. "I need you to stay here till I come back for you."
*I need you to stay here till Daddy comes back for you, okay?*
A voice invaded my mind. My hands grew cold and my heart beat accelerated. My palms began to sweat as cold chills ran down my spine. I certainly didn't like how things look right now.
"N..No.." I unconsciously whispered.
"It'll be fine, sweetie. I'll be back for you. I just need you to stay here, okay?" He says softly.
"No.. that's.. that's what 'He' told me that day too.. No.. Jem please.. No." I told him and clutched his hands in return.
"Shhh.. Shh.. It's fine. I'll just go and check a few things out and I'll be back before you even know it. Okay? See you later sweetie." He said and planted a kiss on my cold trembling hands and let me go.
He was by the door already, his hands firm on the doorknob when fear consumed me and I stopped him. My arms snaked around his torso tightly.
"No.. Jem, don't leave please!" I exclaimed.
I felt his muscles tensed and he froze on his spot. I really thought I had managed to stop him that I started telling myself everything is fine already. His hands held my arm and he turned back to me with his infamous loop-sided grin.
"It'll be fine. I told you that I wasn't leaving right? I'm going to just check things out." He said robotic-like that even he knew it wasn't gonna convince me, but I chose to let him go.
I am, after all, an outsider. What right do I have to stop him from leaving? It's not like I was his lover or wife. It's just.. I'm scared to let him go out, like I felt he'll be hurt if he does.
I felt his strong arms wrap around me this time and he squeezed me tight, but not too tight that I hardly could not breathe.
"I promise you, I'll be back. Besides, I'll have Jenny come up here to keep you company. So, don't worry too much, Okay?" He reassures me as he strokes my hair.
"You must hold on to your promise. I will never forgive you if you don't." I mumbled against his chest.
He chuckled when I hit his back softly, his chest rumbling as he did so and places a kiss on my forehead and he vanished behind the bedroom door.
I collapsed on the carpeted floor, no longer feeling any strength on my knees as my gaze never left the door.
Oh Goddesses. Please keep him safe. I don't want to feel that ever again. Please lead him back here.
I silently prayed and clasped both of my hands together.
