⚠️ Warning: None ⚠️

[874 Words]

The next morning, the United States attacks.

The world cries out as gunshots fire from every corner of the world, deaths racking up from the dozens to the hundreds by the time noon arrives. The sun is barely in the sky, and yet, so much of the roads are painted with blood.

Allies, civilians, and soldiers alike feel betrayed as the very military meant to protect them force the barrels of their guns into their faces. France, Germany, Japan, Korea— all and any country allied with the United States are victims.

As word spreads of such tragedy— of such atrocity, many have the same thought circling through their head.

This is only the beginning.

[NATO's POV]

[Two days later]

Dry coughs wrack through the room.

NATO watches with barely concealed agony as the once strong and intimidating man he looked up to crumbles in his deathbed. The United Nations had always been a tall man, shadowing even Russia, so to see him like this— to see him so small...

It felt unreal.

The chill air of the hospital does nothing to soothe NATO's nerves. The smell, the fragrance, the noise— it all felt too familiar.

Many knew that NATO spends his life out on the battlefield— covered in his comrade's blood or shaking as his leg is split open— but what many do not know is how much of his life he spends in the hospital. Mothers, fathers, daughters, sons— NATO has carried each and every one of them into the hospital as they bled out. Their deaths were simply a turn of luck. Someone unlucky who was caught up in an explosion. Someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What matters is that NATO is no stranger to death.

He knows what it feels like to lose someone. To lose a loved one.

But he also knows that it never stops hurting.

"NATO," UN rasps, watching the other from the bed. He reaches out a hand, shaking. Multiple wires are connected to his arm.

It hurts, seeing UN like this. But NATO walks forward, anyways, taking the other's hand. It's cold.

"Hey." NATO says softly. He studies the cracks on UN's face. "How are you feeling?"

UN sighed. He looked away.

"I think I'm about to die."

NATO knew it was coming. He knew UN was going to say that and yet—

"You can't die." NATO says, like it's a fact. "You're not going to die, UN."

UN doesn't answer. It looked like he had already accepted that he was leaving.

Did he have no dreams? No aspirations? No relationships he wanted to tie up?

How could UN lie on his deathbed, and smile? How could he be so calm?? So... accepting??

"I... suspected that this would happen."

NATO blinked, his expression turning crude. "You expected this?" He asked, a bit pained. "You knew America was going to betray us??"

UN chuckled, waving his hand that was not connected with NATO. "No, no, not like that." He took a heaving breath, licking his cracked lips. It didn't help. "I meant I suspected that the world peace was going to... die, soon."

NATO's face softened. He squeezed UN's hand. "Yeah. Me too." He admitted.

Even though tensions had been a bit high, it had still been at the same level as before. It had never gotten to the point where NATO had started to worry.

It had been calm. Even a bit peaceful.

And that's exactly why NATO— and even UN—  had expected something like this to happen.

It was the calm before the storm. The bated breath as everyone waited for something to happen.

Someone was bound to break the world peace.

But who would've ever guessed that it would be America?

Being a superpower, NATO knew America would be involved in the break one way or another— but like this? Where the personification was basically starting a WW3 against the whole world?

Caught NATO completely by surprise.

NATO's purpose, the whole reason why he was created, was to protect America and his allies. To stand by their side when things got rough.

Who was he supposed to protect now? What was he supposed to do, now that things have changed?

The answer was nothing.

He was going to do nothing.

Because sooner than later, NATO would find himself in UN's place.

Fragile.

Weak.

Sentenced to death.

And there was nothing NATO— or anyone else, could do to prevent it.

World War 3 was already in motion.
