A Wannabe Assassin: Chapter 13
"I'm not a spy," Joey repeated.
"Then what are you? A psychic? A mind reader?"
Joey chuckled. "Neither. How did you get tangled in this mess?"
"I got blackmailed. They've held Piella prisoner. Sent her to Ninja Grammy. I had to help them carry this plan out, or else she dies. Like I said, Eric didn't care about Piella. All he wanted was money, and sex. Not even Merlyn."
"So that explains why you were helping me out. I really was wondering."
"Yep. I know you are a good man."
"I'm not, " Joey whispered, sadly.
"Then tell me why," she said, simply.
So Joey started with his life story. He explained how he lost his parents, how he lived with his grandma since then. How he was successful, and then lost his job, and how he became a drunkard, and how he ended up here, in the pursuit of killing.
When Sherene heard about how he wanted to kill Piella, she slapped him, and then laughed so hard. Tears sprang to her eyes as she realized she poured her sorrow stories to a man who wanted to kill her daughter.
But what she loved about him was his honesty. He was frank, and truthful.
"So that's it," Joey said.
"Looks like we both have interesting stories, eh?"
Joey chuckled. "Yes, seems like we do."
They both looked into each other's eyes for a few minutes. Joey had, by then sat right opposite to her. As they both slowly leaned in closer, a loud siren errupted.
Instantly moving apart, the two looked at the shore, and spotted about 10 men in uniform.
In five long terrifying minutes, they reached the shore. They stumbled out of the boat, cold and wet. An officer handed the two a shawl, and another one started speaking.
"We were informed that a murder had taken place. But it was false information. The victim was rather saved, and you were her savior."
"Yes sir, he saved her," Sherene spoke. She stepped on Joey's foot as he was about to say something.
"Do you work for any agency?" the man enquired.
Joey scratched his neck. He contemplated on what to say. Finally he decided with an answer.
"No sir, " he said.
A man came running. "We've have caught them," he said, panting.
"Follow me," the officer commaned, to Joey and Sherene.
All this while, they were underground. It took a genius's mind to work out such a security system. Joey decided to ask Sherene later what Eric did for a living.
They climbed the stairs and were welcomed by a bout of sunlight.
Joey squinted his eyes. Adjusting to the sunlight, he was shocked by the sight.
Eric Briggs and Merlyn were handcuffed together. They were shooting daggers at Joey, with a screaming Utopia behind them.
Sherene cried out loud with joy when she saw Piella being escorted by a woman officer.
"You will pay," Eric shouted, as two men in uniform shoved him inside the car.
To the right, was Markett and another senior officer. Markett had tears in his eyes as he walked towards Joey.
"How can I ever repay you for saving my wife," Markett sobbed. "Despite how much I tortured you, you still saved my wife."
Joey turned beet. It was quite the opposite. However, outwardly, he said, "You could, for starters, exempt me from my houserent."
Markett sniffed and chuckled. "Of course. I was thinking of letting you keep the house. Oh and one more thing. I'll let the officer tell you."
"So, heard you were a one man army. How would you like to be my deputy officer? I could really do with someone like you. We had someone follow you, since you were initially a suspect. But later we realized you were signalling us to follow you to capture them. Kudos man."
Sherene excused herself as she couldn't stifle her laughter. Joey was speechless. He had no idea what to say. But he took the opportunity to get himself a job.
"Yes sir. I will take up the offer," he beamed.
"All right then. Meet me at my office tomorrow morning, at six."
They shook hands and parted ways.
Joey set out to find Sherene.
Sherene was talking to an officer.
"...I''ll get the sign from him tomorrow," she said. Sherene turned around and found Joey next to her.
"Sign for what," Joey asked, shyly.
"For divorce," she said, simply.
Joey walked Sherene to her house. They were talking casually, as though nothing had just happened.
He dropped her off at the door. Sherene looked at Joey hopefully.
"Okay, this is it, I guess, " Joey said, awkwardly.
Sherene sighed. He wasn't going to ask. Suddenly angry, she slammed the door in his face.
Joey was confused. What did he say wrong, he thought. He was walked away from her house, he felt sad. He didn't want this to be the last time he met her.
With determination, he walked to back to her house and knocked.
Sherene opened the door, with a crying Piella. "What," she snapped.
Now Joey was feeling even more awkward. He wasn't sure if he was ready for this.
"Would you, er, like to, um, go out for coffee, with me?" Joey stammered.
Sherene slammed the door in his face again. That went well, he thought.
