Chapter 7: Mameko and Bakugō
Bakugō strolled out of his dormitory at a late hour when everybody had gone to their chambers and it had quieted down. Usually, he would sleep at this hour, and he had been sleeping indeed, but now he had to come out to retrieve his clothes from the laundry room.
He spotted something on the common hall table near which he passed. He glanced at it and grew surprised - it was a thick hardback book lying open on a specific page. Curious, he bent down and read out the lines:
"The show's on... Now I'm going to make you regret ever having messed with these citizens!"
Bombarder threw up the grenades he always kept at his disposal. The terrified villains, who knew what this move would bring, had prepared to leave the dangerous ground, even if they held the entire school as hostages. However, their reactions proved late - Bombarder had already begun his operation, and there was no way back now. Once his grenades began to fall, he yelled with a vicious grin forming on his lips:
"Bombarder... Ultra!"
He snapped his fingers on both of his hands and ignited the area around him. The grenades that were caught within the range blasted up. Since they were thrown in a large line ahead, they caught explosions of one another and the entire ground exploded, leaving only the ashes of the once-alive villains.
The hostages watched this battle terrified - they couldn't believe a hero had just massacred all the villains! Generally, heroes cared about people's lives, were they villains or casual citizens.
But Bombarder was not exactly a hero. He was sought out by the police just like any other villain, yet he always took aim at villains and not at heroes. He destroyed other criminals, but for his brutal ways, was deemed no less dangerous than his prey. It didn't stop him from operating, though - it seemed that he enjoyed this kind of risky life.
When, at last, the police arrived at the school grounds, all the traces of Bombarder were long gone. The hostages who had witnessed all the events reported that the blond man armed with grenades all over his body had blasted explosive impact out of his feet and taken off to the sky, eventually vanishing in the smoke he had caused.
Yet again, Bombarder had successfully destroyed his victims and escaped the claws of the police..."
"Bakugō-san?!"
Bakugō, who had long been immersed in the story so deeply that had forgotten of all the surroundings, flinched and looked up, to see Momo Mameko before him, watching him with apparent timidity and bewilderment. He quickly snapped out of his confusion and regained his prideful attitude:
"What?"
"Oh, I... I just came to retrieve my book. I seemed to have forgotten it here at the table_ Wait, don't tell me you've been reading it?!"
"Ah, it was yours?" Bakugō got off the table. "Yeah, seemed interesting... Why? I can read whatever I want."
"No, it's just..." Mameko blushed, "It is actually... I'm the author."
"Huh?!" Bakugō now widened his eyes in clear surprise. Apparently, he hadn't expected this outcome. "You write books?"
"I... I'm a writer by profession." Mameko grew all red and cast her eyes down. "This one's the first I've translated in Japanese, and they published it, so I got several author copies for myself. They seemed to like it, so..."
"Heh, amazing..." Bakugō's frown vanished. He grabbed the book and glanced at its cover. The title was "Bombarder: The Heroic Path of a Villain". Right there, was the author's name: Momo Mameko. Indeed, it was her book. "Who would've thought..?"
"Yeah, I guess I don't seem a writer type, huh?" Momo chuckled, to hide her timidity. "So, did you like it?"
"Yeah, seemed interesting. Bombarder, huh? Seems like your father's name."
"Oh, you too have guessed?"
"Nah, Kirishima blurted about it." Bakugō shrugged. "I had no interest in your background."
"Oh... Yeah, I wouldn't have either, to be honest. Some pink midget from a foreign country who loses against you right on the first day!" Momo chuckled again and scratched her head. "Heroism comes difficult to me. I guess I qualify more as an author, huh?"
"You qualify as both." Bakugō handed her the book. "But you'll never top me."
Momo grew red. Did he mean it? But his eyes shone sincerely... He did. It seemed like he was an honest type - always saying what was on his mind, even if it might hurt others.
"Hehe, sounds like a challenge. I don't like challenges, to be honest. I prefer to walk my path without distractions_ Oh..." She looked down at the book he was holding out. "You know, you can read it if you want, and return later."
"Oh, really?" Bakugō withdrew the book. "Thanks! I did want to give it a look."
"Hehe, I'm honoured! Well then... goodnight, Bakugō-san. It was fun. I'm so happy you liked the book!"
"I'll give you proper feedback when I'm finished. Can't promise anything." Bakugō smirked much to his habit. "Goodnight. See you tomorrow."
"Hehe, see you!"
Mameko walked off to her chamber on the upper floors, her heart banging hard from the conversation she had just had. A classmate liked her book... Bakugō, of all people! Which chapter did he read that drove him so interested? She left the page open at Chapter 15 when Bombarder saved the school where his little sister studied... Yeah, that chapter did come out well. Hopefully, he would enjoy the whole book just as much.
With a timid scarlet flush on her cheeks, she walked into her room and closed the door behind her. Japan was truly a cool country... So many exciting events, in the very first week!
Yet, she had no idea that the enemies lurked right in the corner, watching her every move, having tailed her from the Republic of Georgia. The villainous governors she had talked about, knew very well that destroying her outside their country's borders would be an easier and less noisy task, so they had sent their secret agents right after her, once they found out that she had gone to Japan on an exchange program.
Japan was a country bustling with dangerous villains... Of course, Crimson Bombarder's only daughter dying there out of the blue wouldn't be a surprising event, and none of the Georgian officials would be held accountable. After all, Shigaraki Tomura's League of Villains was big enough of an organization to blame everything on.
