Chapter 5: Momo's Heroism - Rose Bombarder
Principal Nezu and every presenting teacher were wonderstruck - a daughter of Crimson Bombarder?! Momo's bitter smile deepened:
"Yeah, I figure what you might be thinking - how come a daughter of a villain has aspired to become a hero? That is a question I face everywhere I go. Back in my country too, schoolmates and teachers would often keep a distance from me, since I was a villain's daughter. You know, the way they promote famous heroes' children right away... I've met the opposite effect since I was a villain's child - they always tried to hinder my progress. Nevertheless, due to my hard work, I've eventually managed to gain their trust. I cannot scold you for your fear - I know it is completely natural. But, I am to discard your doubts right away, Principal - I genuinely aspire to become the greatest hero I can be. I have my visions of heroism, and I shall stick to them no matter what happens."
"Oh, that's somewhat reassuring." Principal Nezu gave her a kind smile. "May I ask - what are your visions of true heroism?"
Every teacher gazed at her with apparent curiosity. All Might too was quite interested in what she would answer. He had known her father, who happened to be quite a complicated person, attacking both heroes and villains according to his own evaluations. In that matter, he resembled more the Hero-Killer Stain who had caused quite an uproar in Japan and was ultimately apprehended. Now, he wished to know what path this girl intended to take.
"My visions of true heroism... are somewhat tied with my father's ones." Momo clenched her fists, with her eyes cast down. She knew very well that these words of hers would stir up the teachers and the principal once more, but she desired to be sincere with them, just like she had always been with everyone. "I am not that type of a youngster who rebels against their parents and runs off to walk their own path. I've been raised by my mother up until my eight years. She would always tell me that my father was the one who had saved her when she was held in custody by some outrageous villains. My father was not the maniacal villain you can often see in societies. Our country is different, hence, heroes and villains too, are defined differently.
"The Republic of Georgia, where I'm from, is a tiny country. The government is tied with some villainous organisations even to this day. We need heroes, but we have too few of them. The prestigious Hero Academy - Tobirishi State Academy - where I study, is full of the governors' sons and daughters. They too become heroes tied with villainous organisations just like their parents. True heroes are very few. The crime rate is high.
"My father and my mother were born and raised in such a society. Of course, their visions about true heroism would be different. The society had long coped with governments and villains operating together, so they moved no finger. My father eventually deduced that the most important factor that might determine the victory or defeat of any party - be it heroes or villains - is the morale. Also, whether one is labelled a hero or a villain, depends on the situation and the conditions of the society."
"Oh? Could you go further into details?" Nezu demanded, already interested in this young child's complicated argumentation.
"Yes, gladly." Momo nodded. "What I mean is - heroes are the ones who save society, and villains are those who corrupt it. But, what happens when society has already been corrupted? What happens when villainous people are in governors' seats?"
The teachers and the principal froze - Momo's countenance had turned grim as if she had personally experienced the atrocities she was talking about.
"Yes, what you are thinking is exactly what happens - they twist the system as they see fit. They deem villains those who go against their cruel rule. They deem heroes those who support their system. In such a society, I kindly ask you to tell me - who is the true hero? The one who works for the benefit of the society, or the one who has truly good intentions?"
The listeners could not give a voice. Finally, All Might spoke:
"The one who struggles to save others in such dire times is the only true hero."
"I agree. But what can be defined as 'saving' in such a society?" Momo glanced at him, "It's surely, to destroy the current system and build a new, better one, no?"
"So, what are you getting at, Mameko-san?" Aizawa furrowed his brow, "That your villainous father was a righteous man?"
"No, you haven't understood me well!" Mameko blushed. "I am just telling you what was my father's motives - the initial injustice that drove him to become a villain. Of course, what he had been doing - destroying heroes, killing people, and other atrocities - can never be considered rightful deeds. Yet still, he was not completely diabolic as some people might think..." Sorrow flickered in her eyes as she cast them down again. "He's saved many people, too. He destroyed maniacal villains who only wanted chaos in the world. However, he never showed his face when he had been saving people. He did it only because of his kind intentions, not because he wanted popularity or anything. He believed in his visions, and he operated according to them. He never defied his principles. He was what I would call a chivalrous villain. My mother too was one of the people he had saved.
"When I grew to my eight years, however, a disaster happened - villains entered our apartment... diabolic villains who cared not about people's sorrow or misfortune. They..." Tears streamed down her cheeks. "That was the day I lost my mother when she tried to protect me. No hero came to our rescue. In that twisted society, people called 'heroes' never had time for those who were truly suffering.
"You ask me why I aspire to become a hero? - Well, how can I let such false heroes dominate the world and run loose? That is unspeakable. I am a person who has inherited a powerful quirk from both of my parents - my father's Ignition Impact, and my mother's Soft Paws (a quirk that allowed her to soften the impact of blows with her hands and feet). It would be a crime on my part if I did not engage in the battle against villains, at that point.
"My father, once I confessed I wanted to become a true hero, rejoiced beyond measure. He told me to aspire to become like All Might." She glanced at the astounded All Might, who was sitting there and listening carefully to her whole story. "He said that All Might had been one of those only true heroes he had met in his lifetime. He said that All Might, as the symbol of peace, served to raise the morale of the entire world, not just the Japanese society. He told me that only such heroes can become a hope for a better world. On his part, in order to help me, he began to behave well in the Tobirishi State Prison, where I could freely visit him and train under his supervision. I've met many other villains, both good and bad, and I've come to know a lot about this world - a lot more than a sixteen-year-old girl like me is ought to know.
"Now that I've come here to Japan, I saw a lot of bright stars here in the U.A. They are sure to raise the morale of the society once they shine. However, imagine this now - all of the villains have been afraid of my father, not just the heroes. He had been attacking everyone indiscriminately, or so the media states. As I've said before, society's morale rises when they see strong heroes boldly protect them in time of need. Likewise, their morale falls when they see strong villains who cause chaos. Now, what shall happen to the villainous society once they find out that Crimson Bombarder of the elder days is to rise again? Such news would cause an uproar both in heroic and villainous societies, as well as normal people because my father had been causing chaos everywhere. But, what will happen if they hear that Crimson Bombarder's offspring, who is just as powerful, stands as a hero?" A mischievous grin covered her face. "The entire villainous society, be it villains in governors' seats or those in shadows, will tremble in fear.
"That is what I aspire for - to become a powerful hero known as Rose Bombarder, sending shivers down all the villains' spines! If All Might worked to raise the morale of people in need, I shall work to drop the morale of villains wherever I appear. That is my vision of true heroism."
The teachers watched Momo with astonishment for a while. Then, Principal Nezu spoke:
"Your vision is truly interesting and new, Mameko-san. Alright, you've cleared my doubts. You shall remain under our supervision for a little while, though, since we would not like to take risks in our current state. I hope you won't mind?"
"Oh, sure! I've been watched every time back in my school too, so I don't really mind." Momo chuckled. "Thank you, Principal! Thank you, teachers!"
She stood up, bowed to all of them, and left the room to return to the dorms.
"Wow, now that's something I'd never expect from Crimson Bombarder's child..." All Might murmured. "A villain's daughter becoming a hero? Yeah, if that's indeed so, the world's surely becoming a better place."
"You and your optimism..." Aizawa rolled his eyes.
