Chapter 17: Crimson Bombarder's Message
"What? The Plague has reached you there?"
Crimson Bombarder's perturbed voice sounded from Mameko's mobile phone. She'd just told him everything about her recent adventures and how Sōen informed her about Death Bearer's intentions. Since her calls with her father were being recorded, she and Crimson Bombarder had devised a cryptic language where they dubbed every famous hero's and villain's names differently so that the prison keepers and the police would never guess what they were talking about. Otherwise, they'd have apprehended Mameko long ago, due to "conspiracies". "The Plague" was such a cryptic alias Crimson Bombarder and his daughter had given to Death Bearer.
"Yes... At least that's what Sōen has said. He said his group is after my ancestor from mom's side, while The Plague and other Natives seek the Old Grudge."
Mameko was no less worried. After she'd gotten the information from Dabi, she called her father to report it to him. Under the "Natives", she dubbed Georgian pro-heroes, thus informing Crimson Bombarder that they too had tailed her, while "Old Grudge" was the name for Mameko's being hunted because of her father.
Crimson Bombarder remained silent for a long time, and then, replied in a solemn tone:
"Momo, darling, I'd advise you not to step out of the U.A. quarters anymore, while you're there."
"Huh? But Sōen said_"
"Dear, be a hero, please."
Mameko flinched - this message meant that she should stay away from the villains.
"Oh... okay, dad. But what about Ikemoto-san?"
"Internet."
"Oh, alright... Yeah, you're right, I'll manage." She heaved a sigh. "Can I maintain ties with Sōen? Via technology?"
"Yes."
"Alright! Thank you, dad!"
She smiled - at least, her father had permitted her to keep in touch with the boy and not cut him off completely.
"Also, darling..."
"Yes, dad?"
"I need Izuku Midoriya's whereabouts."
"Oh... Why?"
"Affair."
"Oh, okay... Hidden or?"
"Yes."
"Okay..."
Mameko began dictating strange words to him, which would sound gibberish in any language, including Georgian that she spoke. It was again cryptic language that she and Crimson Bombarder had devised, for numbers. Crimson Bombarder had just asked her for Izuku's mobile number. When the message had been delivered, he said:
"Thank you, darling! Well, my time's up. Call me later! I miss you. Kisses."
"Hehe, kisses, daddy!"
The call dropped. Mameko sighed - it was so hard being a notorious criminal's daughter... One couldn't even talk normally, without fearing that they were being eavesdropped on. Of course, he could've called from the "Unknown" number instead of the official prison one, but if he came to call her via such dark ways, those prison keepers might suspect something. By letting them listen to their conversations as if they were exposing all of their cards, Momo and Crimson Bombarder could easily trick all the law enforcers in their country and make them believe that they were lawful citizens. By acting like an obedient prisoner, Crimson Bombarder could ensure the safety of his only child, whom he deeply loved and cared about.
Izuku Midoriya was a different matter. Right on that evening when Mameko informed her father about her troubles, Izuku received a strange call from an "Unknown" number on his phone. Freaked out, he answered:
"Uhm, hello?"
"Izuku Midoriya..." A deep voice, pitched on purpose to hide its true identity, sounded. "This is Crimson Bombarder. I have a business with you."
Izuku trembled, alone in his chamber, hearing the ghastly voice of the notorious criminal from his mobile phone, but proceeded:
"Y... Yes?"
"You're close to All Might, aren't you?"
"W-Well, he's my teacher_"
"I know about your powers."
Sweat poured down Izuku's forehead - how the hell?!
"I...I_"
"Listen to me carefully, boy! I need you to deliver a message to All Might, from me. Make sure to remember every word, got it?"
"Y-Yes."
"Very well. Tell him Death Bearer is in Japan. Death Bearer. Will you remember?"
"Y-Yes, sir!"
"Good. This concerns my daughter's well-being, so you'd better not blow it. All Might should be informed, by all means. Tell him also, that Death Bearer has informed the local League of Villains about Nani Kakinome. Nani Kakinome - remember this name. Tell him it's Momo's mother."
"O-Okay, sir."
Midoriya couldn't understand what it was all about, but freaked out by all the circumstances, he made sure to jot everything down as was his habit.
"Also, Midoriya..."
"Y-Yes?"
"If you manage to deliver this message to All Might, you'll do me a hero's duty."
"H... Huh?"
"Be my hero, boy! I can entrust this only to you. Please! It concerns my daughter's safety."
The call dropped. Midoriya couldn't snap out of bewilderment for a long time. When he came to his senses, he grabbed his notebook and rushed out of the dorms to meet All Might. He didn't care anymore how odd and frightening that call had been. The main thing was that, as Crimson Bombarder had just informed him, it concerned Momo Mameko's safety. If an outrageous villain locked in prison had gone to such extents as to call him on the phone via an unknown number, then it must be a serious matter. He informed All Might about it. He didn't forget anything - Death Bearer, Nani Kakinome, Mameko-san's safety. He delivered all of it.
"Death Bearer?! He's in Japan?" All Might grew frightened. "And you said, Nani Kakinome? She's Mameko-san's mother?!"
"Y... You know about them, All Might?" Izuku grew surprised.
"Well, Death Bearer is a famous Georgian villain, a governor in disguise... But more importantly, Nani Kakinome - it's the only known descendant of Yoichi, the first wielder of One For All."
"What?!" Izuku widened his eyes in shock - Mameko was the descendant of the first wielder of One For All?!
"If League of Villains knows about it, it's a problem..." All Might fell into his thoughts. "I'll need to inform the administration about this affair. Mameko-san can't leave the dorms anymore, at this rate."
"Goodness! Will she be safe?"
"Well, as long as she's here, there's nothing to worry about!" All Might smiled. "Thank you, Young Midoriya! You've done well. Make sure not to tell any students about this, including Mameko-san. We, teachers, will take care of it."
"Oh... okay, All Might!"
Thus, Crimson Bombarder made sure that his daughter would not step out of the dorms anymore, now that she was in grave danger. When All Might informed the administration about the issue, they forbade Mameko to leave the school quarters. Hence, she had to message Hiro Ikemoto that she wouldn't be able to meet him again, so they'd have to continue working on her manuscript via Skype.
More painful to Momo was that she wouldn't meet Dabi again, either. She informed him about the school administration's decisions via messages and expressed her sorrow that she wouldn't manage to work with him, as they'd initially planned. She received his reply:
"It is okay, midget. Be safe."
Momo bitterly smiled - maybe it was best for everyone... Neither of them would have to lie to their respective parties now. They'd just follow the flow until it all ended. Their meetings were never meant to be. She'd chosen her path on her own - the difficult life of a hero coming out of a villainous society. She'd always be scorned by both parties, and she'd known that from the start.
Dabi, however, had different opinions about the issue. Once he sent his message to Momo, he tucked the phone into his pocket with a snarl and gazed into a shattered mirror in his broken-down room where he stayed for the night.
I'll make sure none of those bastards leaves this country alive!
