Prologue
"Hey Mom!" A young girl shouts to her mother as she is reading a dictionary on the bed in the guest room as the book lays on her lap. Her mother then replies to her daughter saying "What is it sweetie?!", to which the girl replies with "I need help with something!"
Her mother then slowly walks upstairs into the guest bedroom and says calmly "What is it sweetie? I was just beginning to make dinner." The girl looked at her mother and said "Sorry mom, but I wanted to ask you something" Her mother sat next to her daughter on the bed and looked at the book on her lap. "What do you have there?" Her mother said as she pointed to the dictionary. "Hm? Oh it's dad's dictionary remember? Dad told me I could have it since he's basically like a human dictionary and doesn't need it anymore! Eheheheh!" The girl said cheerfully. "Heh yes you are correct" her mother said calmly but continued "but seriously sweetie, why'd you call me here?"
"I need help with a word" the girl said. "Well what word, darling?" Her mother said concerned.
"This word, it's called prologue, but I don't know what it could mean. The dictionary tells me, but I want to see what a prologue actually is" the girl said with a sad but calm look in her eyes. "A prologue? Well a prologue is something you write at the beginning of a story like describing a setting or the place and the characters in your story." Her mother replied calmly
"Hm? You mean like describing you or me?" The girl said confused
"Yes! Precisely, my dear." Her mother said happily. "Could you show me an example?" She said excitingly. "I'd love to sweetie, but I gotta make dinner right now. Maybe after dessert I can help you, okay?"
"Okay..." The girl said saddened. "Why not try writing your own for now. You can practice while I make dinner and then after dessert, I can help you where you need to improve. How does that sound?" Her mother said confidently. "That sounds like a good idea mom. Thanks!" The young girl smiled at that thought. "You can even use your dad's type writer if you want." Her mother said while smiling. "R-Really!? Oh thank you so much Mom!" "But...you better not break it okay" her mother said as she looked at her daughter. "I promise I won't break it!" She said confidently. "Well alright then. The typewriter is in the kitchen and extra paper and ink is next to it too, but not much so don't use all of it. Now I'm gonna make dinner." Her mother then walked back downstairs to the kitchen and continued making dinner.
The young girl went downstairs to the kitchen and sat at the table where the typewriter was placed. Her father was part of the one point one percent of the population that was a banker, but it paid handsomely. As she walked over to the kitchen she passed the living room there were books stored on shelves at the sides of the room that they kept when they moved from their old home. She sat at her father's typewriter and looked at it. "I hope I remembered how to use this..." The girl said to herself. She pulled the chair closer to the table and pondered about what to write. "hm....what to write...hm... maybe I'll write a prologue about me." Finally she began to write a prologue about herself.
Cerina's prologue
My name is Cerina. I was born on September 27th, 1862. I was born from my parents Johnson and Mary Jane. My grandmother from my dad's side is currently living with us. Her name is Linda. She came with us when we moved to Great Britain and after my grandpa-pa, Barry died. It's so nice to have her with us. I love her and she gives me and my brother the best presents and she's so nice. I have brown eyes and dark, long, and wavy brown hair that I keep down most of the time. I'm wearing a tight corset that I hate wearing, but my father allows me to take it off, but my mom says a proper lady wears them so I'm wearing it to make her happy. I am also wearing a dark blue polonaise. I love it on cool days, but it's a pain on hot days. Luckily I have a baby blue one for the summer time. It's still plenty hot outside though, but I'll occasionally wear some of my brothers old clothes that my brother grew out of if my mom said I could and I get to spend time with my brother and father. It just feels so much better and so much looser than any of my other clothes. I am currently 14 and 6 years ago, I was finally able to go to school just like all the other boys. Before that, my dad would occasionally go to the library and get me some books to read and taught me himself how to read and write when he was finished with work, but I want to meet more people my age and I was hoping to one day go to school just like my brother. I missed him when he left for school. I'm pretty isolated from people in our town since I'm a girl and can't do as many things that men can. This year it'll be my first year of high school. I hope it won't be bad. I missed my friends when I moved from Ireland. I was with a nice guy I met on a trip but he said that the long distance relationship wouldn't work so we broke up. We were only together for a few days. It sucked. I also have a brother named Cecil. He is my half brother and I love him very much although he doesn't know that I do since we argue alot. He is also 2 years older than me and is currently living with his real mother is living in Ireland. We have the same father, but different mothers. We barely look alike. He has dirty blond hair but also brown eyes like me, but he does have lighter skin than I do which isn't a bad thing. I like my skin color and have learned to accept it. He's also alot taller than me. He's even a bit taller than my dad while I'm not even at my mother's height yet. I sometimes get jealous of him about how much taller he is than me. I wish I wasn't so short. The reason he's living with his mother is because he ran away from home and he never came back. So after I finished middle school, my father took us to Great Britain to have a better future. The reason he didn't go sooner was because of his son. Yes he loved Cecil very much, but my father told me that we would've moved sooner if he could've. I am currently living in Great Britain, it's very peaceful here. The rest of my family is currently in Ireland which isn't a bad thing. I loved it there before we moved here but here is good too, but I really do miss them. I've met some great people here in Great Britain. I guess that's why it's so great and called that. I also have two dogs of the same breed called Schipperke. They're so cute. There's on boy and one girl named Boris and Blue Berry or B.B. for short. Today's date is Tuesday July 18th, 1876. The time is 6:37 p.m. Ehdhdjs
"Oh crap! I messed up....well at least it was at the bottom of the page. I can just cut it out." Cerina said upset. She tore the paper off the typewriter where she messed up. "I'll put this in my scrap book for now. The ink is running low. I shouldn't waste it."
"Wait let me see it." Cerina's mother said as she took the paper. "This is good sweetie, but don't give too many details. Be more brief next time." Cerina's mother said calmly. "Okay Mom. I'll do better next time." Cerina then went upstairs to the guest room and put the paper in her book filled with other pages she typed in the past.
Cerina walked back downstairs into the kitchen and looked at her mother. "Hey Mom, where's dad?" "I think he went out fishing sweetie." Cerina's mother replied.
"Can I go fishing with him?" Cerina said happily. "Sorry sweetie. He's been out for a while. He'll be back soon besides, it's also a bit windy outside. I don't want you to catch a cold." Her mother said worryingly
"Mom I'm not a baby. I can handle the wind." Cerina said determined "Sorry sweetie, but you gotta stay home. Maybe when your father comes back you can ask them to take you Sunday."
"What?! Sunday! But it's Tuesday! Come on mom... it's summer break. I just want to spend some time with him. Plus he promised me that he'd take me out fishing one day." Cerina said with a pleading look on her face. "I'm sorry Cerina, but I just can't allow that. At least not today. Besides, it's not lady like. Come help me make dinner." Her mother said calmly.
"Yes mom.." Cerina said saddened as she walked over to her mom and stood next to her. "Grab some carrots. You can chop some up. You should help more often. You need to learn to cook and clean instead of going out and getting food. That's what your husband will do and then you'll cook the food for him."
"But mom I want to also help get the food. I can do it. I'm able to! And I want to help." Cerina said determined. "Heh alright sweetie. I support you. If that's what you want to do, then do it. Your father and I will be behind you all the way." Her mother said calmly "but you better find a man to agree with what you want because...most people think that a woman's place is at home taking care of the children, cooking and cleaning" Cerina's mother said calmly "but mom you have a job just like dad. Why couldn't I do it too and provide for me and my husband?" Cerina said flustered. "Because it took alot for me to ever get a job as a secretary and alot of people in this time think that women should stay home. Most men just want women for their body. Once we're married...we become their property...but...your father saw more than that in me...he truly loved me for me and didn't see me as just a thing...I hope you find a man like that...but there are so very few..." Cerina's mother said saddened. "Yeah. Your grandfather was the same with me so I'm sure you'll find someone special." Cerina's grandmother said calmly as she entered the room with freshly dried and clean laundry.
"Oh okay..." Cerina said saddened. "Cerina don't worry Cerina. I'm sure there will be a man out there who will love you for you. We promise." Cerina's mother said as she rubbed her cheek "heheh I love you Mom and you too grandma" Cerina said and smiled "We love you too Cerina. Now help me make dinner" Cerina's mother said calmly. "Yes mom."
Cerina and her mother began cutting vegetables and fruit as the minutes slowly went by.
"Phew finally done..." Cerina said relieved. "Ugh...my back is killing me...can I please take off my corset mom? We're not even in front of people." Cerina said as she had a face filled with pain. "Alright sweetie. I guess you can take it off for the rest of the night. Also you can put your pajamas on too." Cerina's face filled with relief as she ran upstairs into the guest bedroom, took off her dark blue polonaise dress then unties her corset and takes it off. She then moans with relief and stretches on her bed and puts on her baby blue night gown.
Cerina's grandmother knocked on the door and said "Cerina, I have some clean clothes for you." Cerina then opened the door and replied "Oh! Thanks grandma. I'll put these away." Cerina's grandma then left the room and Cerina put her clean clothes on the bed since she didn't have a dresser yet in her own bedroom and didn't want to put anything away in the guest bedroom. She then walks back into the kitchen as her father comes home with 2 big fish.
"Dad! You're home!" Cerina said happily. "Yup! I'm home! And look at the big fish I caught!" Cerina's father said to Cerina. "Good job! I think this'll keep us fed for the week." Cerina's mother said happily.
"Daddy, next time you go fishing can I come with you?" Cerina pleaded to her dad. "If you really want to go then you can go" Cerina's father said while smiling at Cerina "Wait so I get to go?!" Cerina said happily "Yup! But you better be good and get up when I tell you." Cerina's father said. "Yay!" Cerina shouted with delight. "Put the fish in the ice box. Dinner is ready" Cerina's mother said. "Great. I'm starving." Cerina's father said as he took the fish and put them in the ice box. Cerina's mother then set the plates at the dinner table and all of them sat at the table. Their plates had cooked mutton along with some fresh cut fruits and vegetables from a nearby garden. They then bowed their heads and prayed being thankful for their food and began eating.
The sun was beginning to set and the room became darker and darker. Her family then lit candles around the house when it got darker. They were a middle class family so they had a big house, but it was too big for their family. Usually other families would have more than one child so their house was more than what they needed.
Cerina decided to look around her house as she held an oil lantern. She didn't want to go to bed yet and this was their first week of being in their new home. She wanted to see all the different rooms in her home. When she toured the house the first time, she only briefly got to see all the rooms. She then walked downstairs and started at the front hall. Front halls are now known today as the front entrance of a home. She thought it was very nice and was glad that some furniture was left behind by the old owners although they did leave alot of trash laying around in the home. There was even some things in the kitchen sink that was just left there.
Front hall
She then went to the back hall where the back door was. Back halls are known today as just the back door that leads into the back yard or just the secondary entrance to the house. Cerina hated the fact that there were so many stairs at this house. In her old home it was just one floor and that was it. It was all they needed, but her grandmother did used to live in a two story house with a basement so it figures she guessed.
Back hall
Cerina then went into the first floor parlor. Parlors are now known as living rooms. It was very nice a cosy to just rest on the couch. There was no fireplace, which at the time wasn't a bad thing. It was summer and they didn't need it yet, but they would need it for the winter time when it came.
Parlor
She then walked over the the kitchen her and her mother prepared dinner. It was a bit dirty and she hated the stone on the floor. It look so old and not cleaned for a while.
Kitchen
Cerina then went into the drawing room. Drawing rooms were not for drawing, they were actually for entertaining guests. Cerina hated how empty the room felt. There was just way too much space in the room.
Drawing room
Cerina then thought about going into her grandmothers room to see what it looked like, but she figured her grandmother was asleep and didn't want to disturb her. She had fallen ill a few years ago, but has since then recovered, but has been hesitant about disturbing her sleep. There wasn't much in her room anyways, but it was very nice. She even had her own large bathroom and closet kinda like her old house except her old house had a smaller bathroom. She remembered this from when she first looked around the house and when she visited her grandmother after she was done with school for the day. The other rooms were just the laundry room and storage room, which she had no interest in. Sadly they didn't have a basement or attic, but she didn't complain. There would've been spiders in the basement or attic so she was glad she didn't have to deal with that.
Cerina then walked up stairs and went into the music room. She remembered placing her wooden flute there. She loved playing instruments and remembering her father telling her about the several different amazing artists that had sadly passed away before she was born.
Music room
Cerina then went to the second floor parlor. It wasn't as big as the first floor parlor, but it was much better in her opinion. She just like having a simple living room with not much around. It was what she was used to when she only had one living room in her old home.
Second floor Parlor
Cerina the went into the guest bedroom. It wasn't filled with much but it was good enough to sleep comfortably.
Guest bedroom
Cerina then laid down on the bed as the last two rooms were her parents room and she didn't want to disturb them. Her bedroom was the second, but the second day there were ants crawling around on the carpet. An inspector is expected to come Saturday. So she now sleeps in the guest room until that ant problem gets fixed. Besides, it was already about 9:32 p.m. She looked around the bedroom and sighed. She then turned off her oil lamp, placed it on the dresser beside the bed and laid down on the bed. She then looked around the room until she became tired and slowly fell asleep.
______________________________
Finally, the prologue has been finished. If you haven't noticed, this story is taking place during the Victorian Era. I want to have this story as historically accurate as possible with the time it's set in so please be patient as I am doing research for this story especially about the women's rights during this time period since the main character is female. So please bare with me. This is the most I've ever written for any story, 3088 words to be exact excluding what I am saying now.
If you didn't know, a polonaise (what Cerina will be wearing for the duration of the story except for certain scenes unless I feel like she should wear something else. I'm not a fan of dresses myself unless they're very fancy...or blue...I love blue.) is a dress women used to wear back then and a corset is what women wore to keep their waists tight. This is the outfit she will be wearing for the majority of the story. (Unless I say so because dresses and corsets are the devil in women's fashion)
Cerina's polonaise
Thank you for reading this story and I hope you like this type of story. I've been fascinated with older time periods so I wanted to make a story based on an old time period. Thank you for reading, also none of the pictures used in this book are mine. All of them belong to their rightful owners. Thanks again for reading and have a wonderful day.
