Distance
Sandy and Karen were best friends since kindergarden. They did everything together, from playing to going the same college. But when Sandy got a job offer in another state, they knew their friendship would have to change.
"You're leaving?!" The question is said in shock, as well as disbelief.
"Yeah! I got a job offer to work as an assistant manager for one of the best hotels," Sandy explains, a smile spreading across her face. His eyes are full of happiness and hope that is slowly being dashed away from Karen's face.
"I'm sorry Sandy, it's just..." Karen begins, trying to think of a response.
"What is it?" Sandy asked her. "Do you not want me to leave?" Karen shakes her head vigorously, causing her long chocolate hair to fly around her shoulders.
Sandy walks over to her, taking her hands into her own. "Everything will be fine! I promise. I'll come visit whenever I can. We can videochat, you know."
Tears start flowing down Karen's face again. "I love you more than anything in the world."
"I do love you too. More than anything in this life, even." She lets out a sigh and closes her eyes. "But it's my dream. I can't give it up. I'll be fine though, you will still find someone who will love you like I do, if not more." Sandy assured.
"Yeah right! Who's gonna be there when I go through another heartache? Huh! Who is gonna cheer you up when you binge on Sundaes when you feel down!? I know you, Sandy Cantu. If you don't call me at least once a week, I'll be calling you until you respond." Karen said between sobs.
"I know, I know." Sandy pulled Karen in for a hug. "I'm gonna miss you." Karen reciprocated the hug as she brushed her fingers against Sandy's ash blond hair.
"I'm gonna miss you too."
