Ch. 19

Hey

Sorry about not updating this in a while. I have been extremely busy trying to get a job, figuring out my medical stuff, getting snakes out of my bathroom, and getting ready for school again.

~

We arrived at Bella's house within the hour. She had been unusually quiet on the return trip, and now that she knew her father was a vampire, it seems as though she slipped back into her depression. I knew in the back of my mind that Bella was upset that everyone she knew were vampires and she wasn't. I expected her to start up our old conversation about me turning her soon.

When I turned into the driveway, a police cruiser pulled up in Charlie's old spot. Crap. I got out of the car and smiled as the deputy started walking towards us.

"Carlisle," he greeted.

I waved at him. Bella suddenly covered her mouth and ran inside. My instincts were telling me to run after her, but politeness kept me rooted.

"I went up to your place the other day to tell Bella our leads, but Alice said you weren't there." It was a statement, but he made it sound like a question. His gray eyes bore into my skin suspiciously. I didn't respond.

"Why is that?" He asked, trying to sound light.

I shrugged, looking back for Bella. "Getting out of town."

"Uh-huh," he said, narrowing his eyes.

"Why do you want to know?" I asked back, defending myself.

He shuffled his feet. "Normal interrogation."

I didn't believe him. After a few minutes of silence, I cleared my throat. "Well, if that's all, then I better go inside and look for Bella." I turned towards the house.

"Wait, one second. I know you and Bella are involved, but I want to know something." He broke off. I waited for a few more minutes. "How long have the two of you been involved?"

I had no idea what this had to do with Charlie. I don't think the deputy did either. When mortals started asking me about my relationship with Bella, I tend to tense up. Really, when anyone mentions our relationship. "What does that have to do with anything?" I gritted my teeth.

"Just wondering," he said casually. He added a shrug.

I decided to be truthful. "A few months."

"Have the two of you been sexually active?" he asked, getting out a pad and paper.

I didn't answer that. The deputy wrote something down that may have been "sexually active", but I don't have a gift to see through paper, or to read minds.

"When was the last time the two of you had sex?" He continued.

I didn't answer that either. He wrote down more stuff. Then put it away. "Thank you for your time."

He got into his car and left without another word. I was left wondering what the hell was happening. Bella came out a few seconds after his car left my sight. She smelt of vomit. I wrinkled my nose as she approached.

"I think I'm sick." She said hoarsely. Her hands cuddled her stomach.

I took her pulse. It was off a little. Without saying anything, I picked her up and carried her inside. I gently set her on the couch. Just as I was reaching for my phone, Alice popped inside the living room, worry clouding her eyes.

"What's wrong Alice? Something to do with Charlie?"

She shook her head. "No, he's fine. It's Bella. I can't see her future anymore."

"How is that possible?" I asked, more to myself.

She shook her head once more. "I don't know, but I know she is not sick."

If Bella wasn't sick, then there was only one thing that could be wrong with her. She must be pregnant. Part of me was excited to have a normal baby of mine, not a few vampires I've turned. The other was scared. What would happen to this baby? Would it turn out like me?

"I can't see the baby, either," Alice whispered.

Bella was watching us with fear. She had heard everything, yet said nothing.

"I think you should take her to the hospital, Carlisle."

I nodded, and quickly, maybe too quickly, went to pick her up. I really needed to get a hold on my speed. Alice gasped as she looked at where I ended up, and where I used to be.

"You're turning back," she muttered more to herself. She stared off into a distance and I knew she was trying to see my future. However, she blinked and looked at me worriedly. She couldn't see my future either.

I shook my head. "No, I'm turning into a Vuman, a rare breed of vampire. I loose my strength, gain it in speed, and some even have to sleep, like me. I still drink blood, though." I picked Bella up, and cradled her like a baby as I walked her to the car. My hands and arms were shaking slightly at her weight. It felt odd, but familiar. I was going to have to start working out. Then at my speed, I went to my door and got in. I didn't care who saw me. They would probably just think they were seeing things. Alice followed in her car. My eyes were watering as we neared the hospital. From tears, my hair that was falling in my face? I wasn't sure, nor did I care. Bella hadn't said anything. It frightened me. I took her inside, and past the ER, where people were staring. I took her to the Maternity ward where I put her into an empty room and Alice closed and locked the doors behind me. Then closed the windows and shades. I placed her on the bed. Then hurried to get the ultrasound scanner.

When I placed the scanner on her belly, there was a slight bump. I glanced worriedly at Alice. She returned my glance. Unfortunately, the scanner wouldn't penetrate the sac. I got out a stethoscope, and listened to her stomach. I heard a soft heartbeat. Then a second one. Twins!

I couldn't believe it. I had twins. Bella and I had twins.

"Twins," I said to Alice.

Bella grunted.

"You alright?" I asked, throwing the stethoscope aside. It crashed into the sink on the far wall.

She nodded, pained. "I'm gonna throw up."

Alice ran to get the trashcan. I watched as Bella dry-heaved into the bucket. It was hard to bare. Then a knock was at the door. Instantly, a growl formed in my throat, but I bit it back. I walked to the door slowly. "Who is there?"

"Dr. Cullen, it's me, Jackie."

"Yes, what is it?" I asked against the door.

"What is going on in there? What's wrong with Bella? Should I call her mother?"

"NO - I mean, no, she's fine." I forced my voice to sound cheerful, normal. It hurt me though.

"If you're sure," she broke off.

"Yes, everything is fine." My voice broke, but I knew Jackie was gone.

I breathed a sigh of relief.

Bella stared at me. I saw fear in her eyes, but she didn't express it. I slid to the ground, covering my face with my hands. Bella was pregnant with my children. What would come of them? I was frightened that they would become Immortal Children. I was more frightened that Aro would find out and come here. Aro and I were close friends at one time, but when I chose to leave, he declared me a nemesis. He despised me. Now, with my children, Bella was more vulnerable than ever.

Alice sighed as she held the bucket for Bella to dry heave into again. She hadn't eaten much since we got on the plane. And with her vomiting before we came here, it left nothing in her stomach. The pain was too much. I growled loudly, loosing control of my emotions for a second and threw the small arm chair across the room. It crashed with a loud thud. I must still have a lot of strength if I can pick up an arm chair without sweating. Alice went over and turned the arm chair over. There was a small hole in the wall. She simply moved the arm chair over the hole and turned around.

"What are we going to do?" She asked. She wasn't chipper anymore. She sounded more worried than I was.

I shook my head. I had no idea. I only knew that I had to change Bella as soon as the babies were out. If she made it that long.
