Chapter 14- We get a mansion
The courthouse was in view. Finally, after 1 hour of seemingly endless running. The running into Mitchell wasted 5 minutes of our precious time. He had warned us correctly, there were guards outside the court with semi- automatic pistols that were obviously stowed in their black jacket pockets. I'm assuming they had silver bullets loaded. There was also police supervision, as if the guards were kindergarteners on a playground.
I looked through some bushes that were very helpful, " I hope we can walk through without suspicion" I whisper- barked.
" Do you have your passes?" Emma whisper- barked back.
" Yeah" we replied.
Seth had sent us passes to get in. They would get us in the room without questioning as witnesses. I shifted and stood up and started walking towards the gray building. The others followed behind.
" Hey! What are you kids doing here?" a police officer yelled in our direction.
" We came for the trial" Quinn yelled back.
" Stop right there then!" he said as he started to walk towards us.
We held up our passes that Seth had given us. He inspected the passes, scrutinizing every detail.
" Umm.... Officer Morris" I said, reading the officer's badge " we need to get to the trial immediately" I suggested.
" Call me Chuck, if you ought to" he said, welcoming us as if we were his long lost friends.
" Pyscho much?" Emma whispered in my ear.
I nodded, " Ok, Chuck, can you let us in?" I asked.
" Sure!" he said.
I gave him a fake smile and turned to Jason who had been silent the entire time.
" Hey Jason, got anything else to say?" I said.
" Huh? Oh, umm nothing to add" Jason said, blushing from the embarrassment.
We slid the cards into the slots as the doors opened. The doorways were open. A timer that displayed 23:51 was hung up. 23 minutes to get here I'm assuming. We walked in single- file and the judge looked up. There were a few people spectating, mostly family members of Seth and Henry's family.
" Are you the witnesses?" the judge asked, as if they had been waiting the entire time for us.
" Yes" I answered.
" Ok, come forward. Court is in session!" the judge yelled, as she banged her hammer/ mallet thing.
At that moment, David and his lawyer walked into the room. Henry and Seth and their lawyers followed behind them. We took our seats as defendents. Henry let show in his eyes that he was pissed at the trial. Seth gave a gleam of hope. ( he had always been the positive type )
"Mr. Young, you are our first witness" the judge called me up. I stepped up to the stand. I took a deep breath, 'this wasn't going to be too hard' I thought. Present the evidence and tell your side of the story. We had rehearsed a dozen times on our way here, so I thought I might do good.
" Well, Madam, I have some evidence that the accuser was there at the scene, and actually committed 2 crimes, and the defendant was innocent" I said trying not to stutter. That's a dead giveaway that you are lying.
" Evidence?" she demanded. I walked over to the stand with the bloody knife in a bag.
" Here it is" I presented the bag.
" And this was a knife at the scene?" she asked.
" Correct" I said confidently.
" And your story?" she asked. I told it to her. I left out the shifter stuff and the pack and those details. I did include David at the scene though.
" Anything else?" she asked me.
" No" I replied, as I walked back to the chairs. Emma was up next. She presented very well. Then Jason. He was doing ok on the story. He stuttered a lot though. Not good. Quinn was last. He made all the stories match and presented the photo Jason had took. Henry's attorney looked at us. I think we had a chance.
" A four- way witness trial, the photo..." the judge mumbled to herself.
" Ok, accuser anything to defy?" the judge asked.
" They are kids, can you really trust them?" David's lawyer snapped.
" They do have evidence" the judge said.
" They aren't normal either" David said. At this point, I was getting pissed. We had sworn the oath that it would be true, so yes, we are telling the truth. And that David is going to say that we're part wolf, which is a big no- no.
" What do you mean by that?" the judge asked as she looked at us.
" Do any of you have something silver or platinum?" David requested to the audience of the trial.
" I do" an old lady that no one would have cared about stood up.
" Silver or platinum?" David asked, stealing an angry glance at me.
" Platinum" the old lady that I now hate said. I don't remember being weak to platinum in the first place. Even if I did, how would David know? How was David's plan going to work? Was he going to drain us of our strength and force us to become wolves? The old lady handed a necklace to David. David walked over to me.
" Um, sir, that's not legal" the judge said. David didn't care. He put the necklace on me and I started feeling really tired. I knew that was his plan. I sneezed. I fought the urge to get power from Jax. It wasn't going to happen. The urge was getting the better of me. It can't happen. It can't. My hand twitched. It wasn't obvious to the judge that I was fighting a mini Civil War inside of me. It took all of my will to push Jax out and take off the necklace.
" What?!" David said, as if his entire plan was hinged on this.
" The attempted torture and abuse of a witness is a crime sir" the judge came in. My vision cleared up a bit.
" Which your total number of crimes to 3" the judge. " I'll give you a generous 20 years".
" No!" David said, getting up. He started running. The guards grabbed him at the door.
" And running from judgement, ah, 4 crimes, 25 years in prison plus possesions to the defendants" the judge continued " Including property".
" Which means the mansion, cars, and the land owned also goes" the judged verbally slapped David as he was led to the police car to jail. " And the defendants win" the judge said, winking at us. Henry handed me a Mento. I had a taste of rough metal in mouth.
" Thanks man, I owe you" Seth said.
" Does he know?" I asked Henry.
" Yeah" Henry said, smirking. I started on my mento on the way out of the courthouse. The press was already here surprisingly. I didn't say anything on our way to the woods. We walked as humans until we were sure there was no stray reporters following us.
" I guess we got a mansion now" I said.
" Good thing too, my space was getting cramped" Jason joked.
" Seth, are you coming to the territory?" I asked.
" Yeah, for a bit" he said.
" Ok, who are you riding then?" I asked, hoping he wouldn't pick me.
" Quinn" he said.
' Yes, it wasn't me' I thought. We shifted and Seth climbed on Quinn. We started the way back feeling light- hearted.
