The Only Chapter (because its a short story)

I was slightly more excited than usual last Saturday. I probably sound like the typical teenager, but nothing ever happens around here. No crime. No superheros. That means my parents, Dick and Starfire Grayson, have real jobs in office buildings. If you don't already know, they're retired heroes. My mother was in a group called the Teen Titans. My dad was Batman's side-kick, Robin, and later on joined the Teen Titans.

Anyways, my uncle, Sunfire, was coming to visit. He looked a lot like my mom with red hair, all green eyes, and the orange skin, indicating that he was from a different planet. He would fly in from Tameran, stayed for a day or two and leave. The last time I saw him, I was 5 years old. That was 11 years ago.

"Adien, come down here, please!" My mother called up at me. "Breakfast is ready!"

"Coming mother!" I yelled back down to her. My mom was always polite and very nice, even to those who don't deserve it. I leave the comfort of my bed and slowly descend the stairs that lead to the living room.

When I walked into the kitchen I was hit in the face by the smell of burnt food. I saw my mom holding a plate of charred eggs and blackened sausages, smiling proudly. My mom could never cook very well but at least she's stopped preparing the dishes she used to eat on Tameran. She placed the plate of food next to a glass of orange juice on the small island we have in the middle of the kitchen. I sat down on one of the bar stools and began to eat the food while trying to look happy. Easier said than done.

"Thanks, Mom. That was delicious!" I lied and smiled at her.

I'm told I look a lot like my dad with my black, unruly hair and body shape; tall, strong and well-built. The only thing I have from my mom is her eyes. We both have all green eyes.

"Hey, Dad? Do you want to go play so-" I was interrupted by the door-bell.

"Brother!" My mom rushed out of her room with a towel wrapped around her head. She ran to the door and whipped it open. A man even taller than my mom walked in.

"Greetings, Starfire," My uncle said. His English wasn't' very good. It had taken my mom several years to talk correctly. "Is that you, nephew Adien?"

"Hello, Uncle Sunfire," I waved awkwardly. He smiled widely at me. I smiled back, building up my courage.

Soon my uncle, Dad and I played basketball. Sunfire won of course because he was taller than my dad and I. Afterwards we all went out to eat together. I'd never seen my mother that happy in a while and she's always happy.

When I woke up the day Sunfire had to leave, I climbed out of bed and shuffled down to the living room. I felt the sadness radiating from my mom. She was probably going to make us eat the Pudding of Sadness after Sunfire left. That stuff is nasty.

"Nephew Adien, would you like to accompany me back to Tameran for a week?" Sunfire asked me.

"Let me ask my parents." I got up went to the kitchen where my mom and dad were. "Mom? Dad? Could I please go with Uncle Sunfire to Tameran? It's only for a week."

"No." My mom said coldly. "It is not safe there for you."

"But I-"

"No! I mean no. I do not wish for you to go there," Mom yelled. Her tone surprised me. She almost never yelled.

I knew I should have listened to her but it was so boring here. And I was curious about what Tameran looks like. How bad could it have really been? I never thought of anything like what had happened to me there.

"Uncle Sunfire, my parents said yes. Let me get packed and we can leave," I lied to him. I felt a little guilty for it but my excitement had soon washed it all away.

Sunfire only nodded his head. I ran up the stairs and quickly packed a backpack and ran downstairs.

"Let's go out the back door, it'll make it easier on my parents," I told Sunfire.

My oblivious uncle nodded his head and walked behind me to the back door. We climbed in the little vehicle he used to get here. It looked like a little, steel car on the outside but when I got inside, it was fairly big. It had a control panel and steering wheel by the windshield. The seats were grey and made out of a shiny material I didn't recognize. The flooring was a red, velvety, carpeting.

My uncle started the vehicle, it hovered for a bit and then I saw a bright flash of light. I closed my eyes to block it out and when I opened them again, I was in a whole new place.

"Welcome to Tameran, nephew Adien!" My uncle made a large sweeping motion with his arms. He gave me a small silver-ish device. "It is a translator, so you know understand us," he took it back and clipped it behind my ear.

As my uncle and I walked into a weird little town, I saw a man grab a woman's arm. When she started to scream, he covered her mouth and dragged her into an alley. I could feel my anger start to bubble in my stomach. I break into a run to the alley. I could only see the man raise his hand, he was clutching something. I could hear a soft slice and the woman screaming. Before I knew what I was doing, I was at the mans side. My anger got the better of me. I started to fight as my dad had taught me as a child. I saw a flash of green and the man fling across the alley. That was new.

I looked away from the man and saw the crowd of orange-skinned civilians gathering at the base of the alley. When I looked to where the woman was, I saw that she's gone. Not even a trail of blood was left. The man on the other hand, wasn't moving. Wasn't breathing. But he was covered in blood, and so were my hands. I had killed him.

"Sir, you are under arrest for the murder or an innocent civilian." I felt an officer cuff my hands behind my back.

When I saw my uncle walk in, relief washed over me.

"I, Prince Koriand'rs of Tameran, demand you to release this young man." He said to who I presumed to be chief of the police.

"But he is found guilty of murder, my Majesty."

"Do you know who he killed? The only man wanted dead or alive in Tameran. The man responsible for the death of 5 different Tameraneans."

"Amazing! I'll release him right away!" The chief scrambles to my cell and unlocks it. "Way to go, son," He smiled kindly at me.

As my uncle and I walked out of the prison, I asked him; "What were those things that shot out of my hands? I've never seen them before."

"Those are your starbolts. As you experienced, without proper training they're deadly," Sunfire lifted his hand and I saw that there was a white-ish green ball of energy in his hand.

"Thats what came out of my hand?"

"Yes," the ball of energy disappears. "And maybe someday, like your mom and I, your eyes will turn completely green," He made his eyes glow in a darker green color. We walked in a comfortable silence to what I assumed was the palace. "You need to return home. I know I said for a week but your parents will want to see you. They'll be so proud."

"I can't go home. They'll be angry."

"And why is that? You are hailed as a hero here," my uncle looked at me suspiciously.

"They said I couldn't come. They said it was too dangerous," I looked down and scuffed my shoes across the ground.

"I need to contact your parents. Nephew Adien, I am very disappointed in you," Sunfire said coldly and continues walking to the palace.

Several hours later I heard shoes scuffling down the hall. I had been sent to my room in the palace, it was very luxurious so I couldn't complain. The door creaked open and I saw my parents walk in. My mom looked extremely mad. My dad looked relieved. Usually I'm not afraid of my parents, but by the look on my mothers face, I could tell I was going to get it.

I was surprised when she rushed over to me and hugged me in a bone-crushing grip. Considering she has super-strength, it literally was bone crushing. I hugged her back. I could feel her small frame shudder from her violent sobs.

After she settled herself, my mom broke herself away from me. She glared at me angrily, "Why did you do that? You had me worried sick! I didn't know what happened to you or where you went! I didn't know if you were okay! Don't do that ever again!" My mothers face crumpled and she started crying again. My dad walked over and tried to sooth her.

"I'm sorry, Mom. I-I wasn't thinking and-and I'm sorry. I'll never do it again," I felt horrible. I shouldn't have come here. I shouldn't have gone against my mothers' wishes.

This went on for an hour. When my uncle told her that I killed someone, she looked so disappointed in me. I felt like going and hiding in the corner, I was so ashamed. My mom said it was time to go so I grabbed my backpack and followed behind my parents like a loyal puppy.

My parents had flown a weird looking, orange space ship. As we flew home, I heard a loud siren and then saw a red, flashing light. I saw my parents talking urgently and then my mom stand up. She went to the little hatch we used to get inside the ship but the time she was going out.

"Dad, what is Mom doing?" I could feel my panic start to rise.

"You know your mom can fly and has super-strength. The left engine was hit by an asteroid. Shes going to lift the ship and fly it back to the Tower."

I knew about the Tower. It was where my parents had previously lived until the retired and moved out to the house we live at now. Cyborg, a close friend of my parents, lives in the Tower with his wife, Bee, and his three-year-old daughter.

I watched, horrified, as my mom jumped out of the hatch and flew under the ship. I heard the loud groan of the metal because of the impact my mom was making with the bottom of the ship. I felt the ship start to slow down but it wasn't nearly enough to keep us from crashing.

"Dad, would I somehow be able to help Mom?" I was trying to be brave, I was terrified though.

"No you can't. You cannot fly, you don't have super strength. You can't help, I'm sorry."

I huffed angrily and crossed my arms like a little kid. I hate to feel useless. I slowly snuck out of my dad's' view and grabbed a space suit. I quickly put it on and stepped up to the hatch. By the time my dad saw me, it was too late. I jumped out of the hatch with a cable tied around my waist.

When my mom saw me, she looked extremely angry but she kept most of her focus on trying to slow the ship down. I knew I probably won't be much help but I wanted to try.

I floated over next to my mom and placed my hands on the cold metal of the ship. I focused as hard as I could help my mom with the ship.

"Birds, airplanes, clouds," I thought. I hoped if I focused on things that could fly, I'd be able to fly, too. The same with strength. "Gorilla, Mom, Steel."

I repeated those words in my head, pumping myself up. I slowly felt myself feel in control of my floating body and knew I was flying.

I gripped the ship firmly and started really focusing on my strength. I heard the metal groan in protest and smiled. I was doing it. My mom looked over at me shocked. Together we flew it back to the Tower safely.

My parents were yet again not happy with me for disobeying them again but we're also proud of me. I caught up with Cyborg, Bumble Bee, his wife, and their daughter. We soon left after being told to "come back anytime!" by Bee.

Now I have superpower training sessions with my mom every other day. I love the sessions, but they're hard work. My parents say I'm a natural but they want me to fully control my powers so I don't kill anyone ever again. My powers are supposed to get stronger and more controlled. My dad even thinks I may become even more powerful than Mom, which makes me proud. But I guess we'll have to wait and see. Wish me luck.

Well that's the end of that. Hope you liked it! 😊
