Six

They watched as the mountain lions surrounded their plane, wanting to devour them, no doubt, since their prey was so stupid to stay on their turf in the middle of the night.

Oliver clicked a button on the radio, making the radio one sided, and one glance out the window told them that there are at least six mountain lions outside.

"We won't be able to take them on, they are all adult, one male and his females." Oliver told Skylar, Kaz and Bree, who had been shaken awake. "We're outnumbered."

"So we stay inside until they go away or until help arrives." Bree said, worry filling her voice.

"They are trying to lure us out, and they'll attack the plane, which could hurt Chase even more."

"Then what do we do?" Skylar asked. "I'm not scared, but at the same time, I'm a alien who had a pod of solution for a mother, so I don't really have a say."

"Yes, but out there, it's normally one on one, Sky. It's six against two concussions, a punctured lung, a alien who is surprisingly not hurt, and a broken wrist and sprained ankle. They travel in large groups, which means there could be more in the shadows. It's extremely dangerous."

A startled cry startles them all. Chase woke up startled, his body shaking and as he was shaking, he started sending more waves of pain throughout his chest.

"Bree!?" He cried out, not even being fully awake. "Kaz!? Oliver?! Skylar?!"

Instantly they were all on their knees, surrounding him so he could see them all. Confusion filled his eyes, the way he looked at them shocked the team as he seemed to be having trouble recounting what had happened, where he was, and why he was laying on the floor with a tube in his chest, instantly his fingers wrapped around the alien looking object, trying to pull it out.

"Chase, stop it." Bree said, pulling his fingers away slowly as Skylar grasped his hand.

"We're all here, Chase."

Chase tried to sit up, but was grabbed by the shoulders gently by Oliver and lowered onto the pillows, starting to relax.

"I've had-" Chase swallowed, trying to suck in air, noticing something is wrong with him. "I've had the worse nightmare. There was a explosion-"

"That wasn't a dream, Chase." Kaz told him. "We're still on the plane. Help is on the way, but you've been badly injured."

Chase starred at him, confused as to what he was saying.

"Injured?"

"Yes, you have to stay calm." Skylar spoke gently, still holding his hand. "Do you remember what happened?"

The plane goes silent for a few seconds before Chase finally replied.

"No. What happened?"

"Do you remember the car exploding?" Bree inquired softly. "You were hit by a piece of metal, broke some ribs, punctured your lung, and I had to insert a tube into your chest? You passed out when I did that."

Chase closed his eyes wearily, his voice drifting off. "Why is it so dark in here? Where's Mr. Davenport? I need to talk to him, where is he? What's on television? Why do I hear music?" What's going on?"

Chase's confusion startled Bree. She didn't like the tone of his voice at all. Somehow it feels off.

"Oliver, turn on one of the lights." She frowned while feeling his forehead.

Oliver rushed to turn on one of the interior lights as Kaz gasped, starring at Chase's bluish lips. He was taking small and intense breaths and moving oddly when he did. Even though he didn't speak with hesitation anymore, he was having trouble speaking again.

"What is it?" Oliver asked as Skylar rushed over and turns on the radio, making it so it was two way again.

"Is Dr. Moore still there?" Bree asked, trembling.

"I'm here, Bree." The doctor replied immediately. "What's going on?"

"Chase's lips are turning blue and he's making these strange noises when he breathes. He's confused, doesn't remember much and is talking nonsense. Is that normal?"

The room became silent for a few moments before Doctor Moore spoke, fear lacing his voice. "How high is his fever?"

"Spiking. He feels very warm to the touch, despite the medication I've given him before."

"I'm afraid it's getting worse then. It sounds like he's suffering from ARDS, also known as shock lung. It mean he has respiratory destress disorder as a result from the blast and the shock done to his lungs, meaning he could go into respiratory failure at any time. Is Oliver still there?"

Skylar waved him over as he sat in front of the radio. "Right here."

"Was there a respiratory kit it inside the first aid box?"

"I don't know. What does it look like?"

"Find a box with a breathing tube in it and something that looks like a small hard plastic bag."

Skylar waited impatiently as Oliver went and looked, before coming back.

"There isn't one."

Dr. Moore sighed. "I was afraid of that."

"Why? What's going on?" Bree asked frantically.

"If I'm right and Chase is suffering from ARDS, he could stop breathing at any time, in that case, you'd need to manually resuscitate him. If he was at the hospital, he'd have a breathing tube down his throat to take the pressure off his lungs, as well as being medically induced coma. Basically his lungs are shutting down, making it hard for his body to receive the air he needs."

"How much time does he have left?" Bree asked fearfully as Kaz wrapped his arm around her.

"I can't predict that. If he's strong, six to eight hours, but to be honest, it could happen at any time. The moment he stops breathing, we have a major problem." Dr. Moore confessed. "You would be forced to manually breathe air into his lungs, and no one can do that for such a long period of time."

"How can we stop this from happening?" Skylar asked.

"You can't. You can only prevent him from passing out again, as it might worsen the situation, you have to keep him alert, but if his lungs go out." Dr. Moore stopped."I'm sorry, Bree."

Kaz and Oliver looked each other in the eye now that they knew their best friend could lose the battle after all while Bree struggled with the information, looking down at her hands, before responding sharply.

"No. I won't let that happen. We'll talk to him, keep him alert, get his mind off things. Chase will NOT die, not like this."

Oliver nodded with a new sense of determination. "We'll figure it out. Just get the troops here fast."

"We're doing everything we can, I promise." Jacob interrupted. "The search parties are going at the speed of light, but we don't have anything to work with except wrong coordinates. Check the luggage compartment, there you should find flares to light for attention. Its what a lot of pilots bring on small planes, and while I can't guarantee there are some, if you have enough, if someone is in close range, they will see you."

The group looked up, fear clear on their faces as the control panel started letting out a shrill beep.

"What's happening?" Kaz asked in fear as Oliver looked at the panel, frustration covering his face.

"We're almost out of fuel."
