Chapter Six
A Trip Down The Memory Lane Kai and I started to get to know each other better. It was the days after prom and before the holidays in which we bonded the most.
For the first time I had actually felt free because I had a friend other than Olivia. While she was spending all her time with Levi, I got to spend mine with Kai.
I found Kai as a nice distraction from the unknown jealousy I got when I was alone.
One disadvantage was that the story of what happened at the prom - Kai intentionally spilling his punch on Chloe.
A rumor had also started that Kai and I were dating and I had manipulated him into doing so.
Olivia knew that we weren't together but agreed we'd be a cute couple. All I had wanted with Kai was a friendship.
"Hey," I sigh, throwing myself on one of the sofas in the library. Kai looked up from his Physics textbook with a grin.
"So, how was the test?" He asks.
"I'd say I got decent marks," I mumble," But I hate Biology so much, it just doesn't seem to interest me."
"I'm sure you'll like it one day. It's a fascinating subject, really."
I just shrug and get my library book out. It was a free period for the two of us, so we'd usually meet up in the library to study. As I had just had a test, I felt it was best to do something that released stress.
"He looked at me the whole time and I swear we're going to get married now-!" Someone giggled loudly. I look to see who it is and my eyebrow immediately raises.
"Be quiet girls, this is a library!" The librarian whispers loudly enough to get everyone's attention.
Chloe gave her a disgusted face smirking and walking towards us. The librarian scoffed before going back to typing ridiculously fast and noisily.
We had managed to avoid Chloe at all costs. It was pretty obvious she was the one spreading rumors so people feel bad for her. But now we'd have to sit, listening to her threatening us for almost ruining her reputation.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the nerd and the guy who couldn't have a much more worse taste in girls." Her two friends standing behind her whispered at us.
I glanced at Kai to see that he has curled his hands into a fist.
"You were the worst taste I ever had Chloe," He said. I raised an eyebrow.
I wouldn't have expected Kai to say that. Every guy is head over heels for Chloe and anyone would admit she's the prettiest.
"But, no regrets that I dated you," Kai said shrugging,"At least I won't make that mistake again."
Chloe tilted her head to the left with a smirk,"You'll regret it. You'll regret moving on from me so quickly. If you can't be with me, you can't be with anyone else. I'll make your lives miserable!"
"Leave us alone," I mumbled, finally mustering up a bit of courage.
"Especially yours!" She spat.
"Chloe!" The librarian yelled, walking towards. "I will have to ban you from coming in here for a week."
Chloe rolled her eyes and said sassily,"It's not like I read anyways. Come on girls."
The three of them catwalked out of the room
"Honestly these girls are such a headache..." The librarian began her usual talking to herself as she walked back to her desk.
Kai let out a frustrated sigh. "I swear Chloe is so clingy. I don't understand why she can't find another guy. It's not like she ever liked me, she just stayed with me because I'm popular."
"We probably should just ignore her as much as we can," I whispered back. Trying to stop her would mean attention, and that was the last thing I wanted.
Kai tried to smile at me,"You're right, let's just focus on studying right now."
I nodded and went back to looking down at my book.
Time passed and every so often I would glance at Kai. He did have the looks, and he was a great person to hang out with.
I rubbed my forehead in frustration. It was very pressuring when people wanted you to date someone just because you're friends with the opposite gender.
If' not like they actually cared, anyways.
"Wanna take a break?" Kai whispered. "You seem like you might hit your head with the book instead of reading it."
I quietly nodded 'yes.' We stood up and I stretched my arms a bit.
I followed Kai out the library and into the corridor. I had always admitted this part of the school.
The library wasn't part of the main building in which all the classes were. It was at the back of the school.
We had a bit of an area which was like a garden - meaning use for the art students who paint. There was a pathway which led to an open corridor for the library.
The library was huge, full of different kinds of books, even after all these years I hadn't managed to read half of the books.
Kai and I walked out to the garden and sat of one of the benches. One time, Olivia had to stay behind because she wanted the sunset in her painting.
I remember having a blast. The both of us had first had a tiny picnic and prank calling people while waiting for the sun to set. Then I had spent the rest of the time cracking dad jokes - which annoys Olivia the most.
"I've always adored the butterflies in the garden," Kai says. He examines a butterfly that has landed on a sunflower in front of us.
It has the darkest shade of brown wings, and nine dots on each side going down vertically, right at the edge. The colpur of sky blue looks like it has been spray painted a bit at the end.
"Did you know, in korean, a butterfly is called Na-bi?" He states.
"Na-bi?" I repeated. He hummed in response and reached out to the butterfly.
I watched his hand. Kai left his hand there as the butterfly slowly went towards it, thinking it's a flower.
Slowly, it began to walk onto Kai's finger. I silently gasped.
I carefully stood up and took a picture of Kai - who was grinning proudly. As Kai tried to move his hand, the butterfly flew away.
"No!" Kai said. He didn't look mad, though.
"I wish I could do that," I said,"But I don't think I'd have the patience to do so."
"Have you ever tried?" He asked. I shook my head 'no.' "Then how do you know you don't have neighbors patience?"
He did have a point. I just shrugged, not having an answer. I relaxed, leaning my back on the table behind us. Kai copied my movements.
Without a warning he reached for my hand, and I immediately flinched. I wanted to bang my head for being so stupid. How could I flinch? He wasn't Paxton. He was Kai.
Kai worriedly looked at me,"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, sorry. I was just surprised. I didn't mean to flinch," I quickly said. He looked as though he didn't believe me but didn't push it - which I was grateful for.
All men are the same.
Paxton's incident had scarred me for life. It had only bern a few weeks. At first, I used to get a few nightmares, but I ignored them and told no one.
Only Levi, Olivia, the nurse and principal and Paxton's parents knew about what happened that day. I didn't tell anyone else.
Paxton's parents were unbothered by his behavior, even though Paxton had gotten suspended for a month. They hadn't apologized for anything.
Paxton had one more week left of suspension, and only I seemed worried about him coming back. Olivia seems to have forgotten everything, and Levi never cared.
"Amy?" Kai called out. I suddenly snapped out of my thoughts. "You seem nervous," He says point at my bouncing leg.
I immediately put my hand on it and silently curse under my breath.
"I'm really worried about the Biology test, what if I actually did horribly? Those last question were a huge headache," I rambled hoping it was enough to use as an excuse.
"Let's run," Kai says after a minute of silence.
"What?" I question, confused. He stands up. "Come on."
I take his hand and he leads me past the garden and towards the stadium where all the sports events happen.
"Let's have a race, see who's faster."
I roll my eyes. The both of us know I can't run to save my life. But either way I agree to the race.
We stand in the same line and Kai begins to countdown.
"Three.. Two.. On- Hey! That's cheating!"
I let out my laughter as I run in front of him. It only takes a matter of seconds for him to catch up to me.
"You thought you could win?" He slightly yelled before easily going in front of me.
"Hey! That's not fair!" I said, trying to match his speed. I end up stopping to catch my breath.
I sit down on the track and lay my head. It's the most running I've ever done this month.
I gasp for air and Kai comes into view.
"That's what cheaters get," He says, grinning.
"Shut up," I groan, trying to push him to the side. "Oh my god, why won't you budge?"
Kai took my hands that were hitting his legs and pulled me right up. I was now in his arms and the both of us were staring into each other's eyes.
My heart was beating fast. I couldn't tell if it was because I just ran, or if it was from the position we were in.
I could see a slight blush on Kai's face. Before I could say anything, though, he let go of me and stick his tongue out.
"See, I'm stronger than you," He mocked.
"You're so annoying," I say rolling my eyes and hearing to the garden.
"But you love me," Kai said jogging up to me.
I don't say anything and just carry on with a smile on my face.
Did I love him?
