Chapter Seven
A Trip Down The Memory Lane to when it was my first time going to a real match.
"Just put this hat on and you should be done," Olivia instructed pointing to the hat that sat on her bed as she did her eyeliner.
I put the hair straightener down and grabbed the white hat with the number sixty-nine on it. I was wearing Kai's jacket with the same number on the back of it.
"You'll have to teach me what baseball is about," I say checking myself in the mirror.
My hair fell down my shoulders. Olivia had put makeup on me. It consisted of a bright red lipstick, foundation, some blush and black eyeliner.
She wanted to put more on me so that I'd shine in front of Kai, but I had done my part of protesting - which, to my relief, had helped very much.
"Dang look at us, we look sexy!" Olivia says looking at ourselves in the mirror and leaning one hand on my shoulder.
She took her phone out using her other hand. I posed a korean heart sign - something that had became a habit because of Kai - and Olivia made a kiss face.
"I'd say this can go in the best pictures folder," Olivia grinned.
The best pictures folder was newly made. It consisted of all of her and Levi's pictures and a few of ours.
Yes, I was jealous. I had been in Olivia's life longer, yet her gallery was full of pictures with someone else.
I tried not to look like I had been put down.
"We should get going," I begin. "Kai said he wanted to see me settled down with popcorn and a drink before I sit down."
"He's totally into you," Olivia cooed looking at me with a knowing face.
I rolled my eyes at her. "I think Kai really had feelings for Chloe. There's no way he could've moved on so quickly."
"Did you know his feelings for Chloe has faded away but he had stayed with her for a month?" Olivia asked - more like said - to me.
"Why did he stay with her then?" I questioned, walking down the stairs right behind her.
"There was this deal going on with both their families, so Kai had to wait," She says. "Mum, we're leaving!"
"Have fun the both of you!" Olivia's mum yells back.
Olivia opens the door and the both of us walk towards her car. I wasn't surprised Olivia knew all this, her ears were open to everything.
It would've been surprising if she didn't know.
When we got into the car, Olivia made reach for her phone, but I was quicker.
I grabbed the cable and plugged my phone in with a smirk on my face.
"It's not fair!" Olivia whined, unable to hide the grin on her face,"It was my turn to play songs this time!"
I just stuck my tongue out at her and began scrolling through my playlist.
"So, today's mood is?" I began.
"Definitely happy and excited," She finished.
I looked for the perfect song that would make us want to scream the lyrics out, not caring about anyone else.
Immediately, I put on a Blackpink song called Ddu-ddu-du. It was a song that Kai had recommended, and Olivia and I were in love with it.
"Perfect!" Olivia said, trying to say the korean lyrics but failing miserably.
As the car made it's say past the road, and through the busy traffic of adults wanting to get homr to their family, we laughed at our silliness and awful attempts at getting lyrics right.
"You know," Olivia said, pulling up in the parking lot,"You've been smiling a lot more with Kai around."
I looked at her in question.
She stops the car engine and looks at me, sighing. "There was a period of time - after I started getting closer to Levi - when I felt around me you were less smiley."
I stayed quiet. A rush of unexplanable emotions went through me. Maybe I was just mad that Olivia said that she never liked Levi when we were younger and now that's all she can think about.
Don't be stupid Amy, you were kids back then. Things change, you clearly haven't.
"Kai's opening you up, I'm so glad I haven't lost you," She continued, a small smile plastering on her face.
I couldn't help but share an identical one.
For some time, we stared at each other. I got lost in her beautiful eyes till the sound of teenagers cheering brought me back to reality. "Come on," I said softly," We'll be late."
"Yes, let's go!" Olivia slightly yelled, her excitement rushing through once again. I giggled at her and opened the car door.
It was golden hour, a slight breeze got my hair flying. "This is such a beautiful place," I say.
Olivia hums in agreement as she puts on Levi's jersey. "It's going to get real windy soon, we better get your's from Kai."
She locks the car door and we walk down the stairs. It's kind of like a proper stadium - a field in the middle surrounded by seats - except this one is owned by the school.
It's almost empty except for the two teams playing. They've both taken their own half. Kai's team was the red team and they were huddled up together, probably having a last minute prep talk.
Levi's team - the blue team - were warming up. Levi was leading it and everyone was following.
My eyes focused on Kai even as my foot stepped the field. A few seconds later we heard the red team say,"Go red!" As their arms flew in the air.
Thry seperated up and Kai immediately began looking around, which I guessed was to find me. The moment his eyes locked mine, I could see a faint smile on his face as he jogged towards us.
I faced Olivia who already had a knowimg look on my face. I rolled my eyes at her and she began giggling in excitement.
Not long later, Kai had crossed the field and was now a few steps away from us.
"Hey Amy, Olivia," He breathed out.
"Hey Kai," Olivia said, giving him a nod,"Good luck in today's game."
"Thanks," Kai replied, but he was focused on me.
"I should quickly check up on Levi. I'll see you at our seats, Amy," Olivia sent me a hiden wink as she left.
"Hey Kai," I softly said. "You nervous?"
"Kind of," He shrugged,"I'm glad you came, though." Kai then mumbled something under his breath.
I wanted to ask him to repeat it, but decided if he wanted me to hear it, he would've said it louder.
There was a few moments of awkward silence, something that had never happened before.
I saw Olivia waving to Levi in the distance and walking up another set of stairs. Kai saw this too, because he then produced his jacket he had tied on his waist.
"Thank you," I smiled at him. "I hope your team wins today, I'll cheer very loudly.
"I'm sure we'll win now that you're here," He said. Was he flirting for fun? I didn't know, but I tried my best to hide the blush forming on my face.
"I-I should get going," I stammered a bit, panicking, and quickly walked away. I wanted to slap myself for stuttering.
I hurried up the stairs, my palms now sweating. Olivia was stood by our seats with a knowing look.
"You're face is red," She teases. I bring my hands to my cheeks trying to cook them down with my hands.
"Probably because of these stores," I mumble, not looking at her in the eyes and passing her to sit down on my seat while putting on Kai's jacket.
It's warm and cozy in the inside, and Kai's scent is detected by my nose. I secretly smile, happy that it's now mine for some time.
Olivia let out a laugh, I knew she watching all my facial expressions deeply.
There was chattering. I turned around to look, and many teenagers and parents were descending down the stairs.
Olivia glances at the watch. "The games going to start soon," she says sitting next to me. The seats we've chosen are in the middle rows. It's not too high - which would make it hard to see the game properly - or too low - which would me we wouldn't see all players.
I focused on Kai and their group. They separate and both teams begin to take their positions.
Kai's team was first fielding, and he was stood near our lines of seats are.
I watch Kai as he scans through the stadium. When he stops, I know it's because he has found me, and is well aware that I am staring back.
I give him a thumbs up sign - which he returns. His attention was stolen when the coach. There's a whistle, and the game begins.
"Okay, so, as you can see, there are four pitches," Olivia starts to explain. "After that batter hits the ball they must try and run at all of those points, if they manage to do it in one run, it's called a home run."
Kai throws the ball up in the air and then to the batter in front of him. My breath is hitched even though the game just began.
The batter punches the air after he has noticed he missed it.
"Strike one, he has two more chances or he's out," Olivia mumbles. The ball is thrown to Kai, which he skill fully catches. He get a proud feelinf inside of me.
The ball swerve the batter once again and is hit straight into the sky. He begins to run, and so do the fielders. But Kai's team is too slow and he's reached base one successfully.
I hit my thigh in anger. "Calm down Amy," Olivia giggles,"It's just the first person. You can't tell whoever going to win it loose yet."
I bite my lip at response staring at the next player; It's Levi. Kai and him stare at each other till Kai lifts his hand up and does a slider. Levi immediately sings his bat and it goes flying, out of anyone's reach.
Levi's team let out sounds it victory and pat Levi on the back as a 'well done.' Olivia and many others stand up cheering too. I let out a shaky breath knowing I was being too impatient.
Many come and go, and soon they're on 20 points to 17 after both teams switch. Kai is the first batter and he must score a home run if his team is to win. We stare at each other for three seconds before he breaks eye contact, focusing back on the game.
I cross both my fingers, arms, legs and tongue for luck; Even Olivia is biting her lip in anticipation. The bowler slowly throws the ball out of his grip - which breaks through the wind towards Kai.
One.. Two.. Three.. Four...
Kai leans back a bit.
Five...
With as much force as can, Kai hits the ball. We watch it as it soars across the sky. All the fielders in Levi's team run in the direction of the the ball so they can catch it - some tripping on each other.
The ball begins to descend and there's a possibility that the ball will be caught. The fielders run faster.
Then the ball hits the ground. There's silence in the crowd before I get up and scream out of happiness - Kai's team won by one point.
I spin around and jump up and down trying to express my emotion of joy. I pull Olivia up - who's not exactly celebrating - as she stands with her arms folded and shake her shoulders.
A small smile cracks on her face and soon she's laughing at my immaturity.
The cheering dies down and there's gasps and wolf whistles all around me. I turn to investigate this change of mood.
My eyes brighten and I can feel my cheeks heating up. All the members of Kai's team are stood there holding a long cover that has Be my girlfriend Amy? painted on it.
"Come on," Olivia whispers, gently guiding me down the stairs. I look around, there are so many people from our school watching.
I turn my face back to Kai. If I rejected him, he would get humiliated and it would be another subject of gossip around school.
Kai was like a brother, but I had nothing to loose, right? I could feel Levi's eyes on me; Was he going to get mad at me?
Soon I'm facing Kai and he wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me close to him. Our lips are inches apart - I've never gotten this close to him.
"Be my girlfriend?" He asks once again, but this time out loud.
I search his eyes and I know this is no joke, so I begin to slowly nod till I am able to let out the word,"Yes."
Kai spins me around in joy before going to hug his teammates. Some are gasping, some are cheering.
Olivia has a broad smile on her face. So many people are happy, but for some reason, I'm not.
Whore.
