Chapter 9

"Cait!" Amy tapped her hand against the sleeping roommate and received nothing more than a gargled snore; Caitlyn laid there with a leg and arm hanging off the couch. Her book sat near her head, still on the same page number she had started on and covered in droplets of drool. Amy tried to wake her again, "Cait!"

Indecipherable mumbling followed, "what is it?"

"There's something outside," fear made Amy's voice shake.

"Seriously, Amy?" Caitlyn rolled over on the couch, "of course there's something outside; we live in the woods. It's probably a bear or a raccoon."

"I don't think it was a bear or a raccoon," Amy brought her arms up and wrapped them around herself, feeling the goosebumps grow at an alarming rate.

A fluffing of a pillow and a yawn indicated Caitlyn's stance on the situation, "just go to bed. I'm sure it's fine."

Amy released a long drawn out sigh while walking slowly back to her room. Snores sounded loudly from the couch before she had even stepped through her bedroom door. She glanced out the window as an attempt to calm herself, and watched the trees outside remain still.

"What are you five?" Amy asked herself, shaking her head.

She grabbed onto her purple comforter and instantly felt the chill subside from her body. As her head hit the pillow Amy looked to her right and saw the gold pendant; she reached for it. A sudden wave of comfort hit her, and she took the necklace and placed it around her neck. Oddly enough it didn't feel cold at all, and the warmth from it acted like a blanket, sending a pleasant tingle throughout her body. The view of stationary branches outside her window starting getting blurrier, and finally, after only a few minutes a peaceful sleep had taken hold.

Amy felt the fresh trickling of rain hit against her eyelashes; she blinked rapidly. Confusion had set in, sending her mind into overdrive. She spun in a circle trying to figure out her surroundings, but was let down by the never ending forest around her. Nothing but trees and darkness were present, along with her heavy panting. She tasted the pine in the air.

"Hello?" Amy continued to spin around, "is anyone here?!" The only response was a rippling echo that seemed to go on forever.

CRACK!

A branch snapped behind her. She turned around quickly only to catch a glimpse of a fast moving blur out of the corner of her eye.

"H-hello?"

A shadow rushed past, cracking more branches and twigs along the way. The uncontrollable shaking nearly kept her planted in place, but the figure finally revealed itself. It almost could have passed for human, that is, until it stepped out into the clearing and the moonlight hit its face. Every facial bone appeared to be caved it, and its flesh had a sour color to it; skin sat shredded without any blood oozing from the wounds. He brought up his shriveled hands and clenched them together; the sound was reminiscent of the stretching of leather. His smile was cruel and relentless, and Amy shrieked at the canines he bore. She bolted in the first direction her feet took her, running through thick grass and uneven stumps that protruded from the earth. The moonlight grew dimmer the further she ran, but the sounds of footsteps behind her grew nearer and nearer. Her shoe became trapped under a massive root and she fell to the ground; the sting of the impact made her wince and taste the cold dirt beneath her. She rolled over and looked up into the night. The man stood over her and attempted to speak, but all that escaped his wrinkled lips was a long wail. He leaned in closer, opening his mouth widely. Amy smelt the decay and screamed..

BANG!

Something hit the side of the house and sent Amy, covered in cold sweat, straight up from her bed. The pounding continued around the building and made her heart nearly beat out of her chest from terror. The noises felt like they went on forever, but she sat there frozen until the sounds grew closer to her window. Instantly, she jumped up and rushed back out to Caitlyn. The poundings grew quicker and more forceful, but Caitlyn didn't appear to be phased. She laid there snoring loudly.

"Caitlyn!!" Amy screamed.

The poor girl shook and sat up, confused and not awake, "What?!" Her question was answered quickly. She sat there with wide eyes, as still as a statue, listening to the symphony of booms that hit against the siding outside of the house, "What the fuck is that?!"

"I told you there was something outside!" Amy ran to the couch and fell next to Caitlyn. They grabbed on to each other, trembling.

"We need to call the sheriff," Caitlyn went and reached for her phone on the coffee table. Her shaking didn't help with dialing and she cursed softly to herself; fingers kept hitting the wrong numbers in a panic. Eventually she succeeded.

"Sheriff? It's Caitlyn from Grove Street."

Amy watched Caitlyn as she talked to the sheriff. The banging continued, causing the girls to flinch simultaneously.

"There's someone outside the house," her voice shook.

Caitlyn listened intently to Sheriff, while Amy continued to watch her roommate tighten her grip around her cellphone.

"No, it's not a bear."

It was clear that her message wasn't getting across. She shook her leg up and down and bit at her fingernails. After a loud huff she placed him on speakerphone as soon as the sounds made their way to the living room.

"Does that sound like a bear?" The line went silent for a moment while both Caitlyn and Amy awaited a response.

"I'll be right over," he said quickly.

A sigh of relief, "Thank you."

Thankfully the town's miniature size made quick response very plausible. That was the only good thing that Amy could recall from living in Felton.

"Should only be a couple minutes," Caitlyn crossed her arms and leaned her head on Amy's shoulder. The tickle from the pixie cut Caitlyn kept made Amy twitch, "what's wrong?"

"Well I'm cold and your hair is making me itchy," Amy replied. Caitlyn sat up and looked over and her roommate, dressed in only a bra and mismatched panties.

"The last thing we need to do is give the poor sheriff a free show."

The floor of the apartment wasn't very tidy, with garments and accessories strewn throughout the beige carpeting. Caitlyn bent down beside the coffee table and dug out a light blue chemise that laid bunched up beneath a couple old magazines. She held it up in offering to Amy who looked at it with a raised eyebrow.

     "What?!" Caitlyn asked.

A mopey hand grasped it, "Better than nothing, I suppose," she said, slipping it on.

Suddenly, silence was in the air. Amy and Caitlyn looked around, puzzled at the quiet surroundings.
