Chapter 6
"You're insane !", Samaëlle exclaimed, her fists clenched out of anger.
"Why did you do that ?! They were leaving !", the Doctor added, pure rage coursing through his veins.
"It was only self-defense. This technology is alien, we got it thanks to a spaceship that crashed on Earth a few years ago. Fight fire with fire.", Jones explained. "You said it yourself, Doctor. That they would go back up there, in the stars, and tell others about the Earth. You're not always here to get us out of trouble ! And when we're on our own, without your help, we have to fend for ourselves."
"I gave them the wrong warning, I should've told them to run as far as possible. The monsters are coming for them, not the other way around. Mankind has become dangerous. No, actually, I should've stopped you."
"Well then, what does that make you ? Are you now a threat that I have to thwart ?"
"When he helps you guys, great, he's a hero ! but the minute he begins to try and condemn your decisions, your actions, he becomes a threat ? Please tell me you see how hypocrite that sounds, Jones !", Samaëlle intervened.
"She's right about one thing, though, Ellie.", the Doctor said, laying his hand on her shoulder. "I could very well become the most dangerous being in the universe. I am a new man, and I could bring down your government with a single word.", he added, turning to the Prime Minister.
"You are certainly very powerful, but even you can't do that.", she retorted.
"No, you're right. Maybe not a single word. More like six."
"What ?"
The Doctor walked up to Alex, which stood there just looking at the sky as the spaceship's ruins fell slowly into the atmosphere ; and whispered in his ear :
"Don't you think she looks tired ?"
Then he turned back to Samaëlle and they went back in the T.A.R.D.I.S. together, as Jones frantically asked Alex what the Doctor had told him. He didn't answer.
---
The Doctor had landed his blue box in front of Samaëlle's house, in Paisley, and was now having a little relooking session under the teenager's critical eye. Priorities, what can I say.
"What about that ?", the alien asked, holding a frilled shirt that could've taken its toll amongst women and certain gentlemen during the 17th century.
"Nope. No way."
"You're right, to much lace. Found it !"
He popped out of the impressive pile of clothes spilled all over the floor, a triumphant look on his face, holding a long brown coat and a suit.
"That'll do.", the teenager approved.
The Doctor grinned once more, looking like a kid on his birthday and went to try on his new outfit.
Meanwhile, Samaëlle petted her tarentula and tried to clean a bit of the ginormous mess this relooking session had caused.
"TADAAAAAAAAAAA", sang the Doc as he came out of the room nearby, spinning on his heels to make his coat 'fly'.
"Awesomazing", Samaëlle answered, amused and kinda wondering how she ended up there. She felt a light vibration in the floor. It seemed that the T.A.R.D.I.S. too enjoyed her pilot's shenanigans.
---
After the relooking session, the two decided to begin replacing the shattered windows of the house. More precisely, Samaëlle had convinced the suit-wearing man that she could never clean up the mess all by herself, and that if aliens had wreaked havoc, an alien could very well help.
A few hours and a lot of cleaning/repairing efforts thanks to some artifacts found in the T.A.R.D.I.S. (Samaëlle had been quite surprised by a room solely filled with diffrent kinds of doors and windows) later, a Doctor beaming at the sight of a well-done job as well as an exhausted Samaëlle crashed on the couch and relaxed for a few seconds, then Samaëlle remembered the date.
It was Christmas Day.
"Is there anyone up there in the stars, waiting for you ? Even if it's not to celebrate Christmas, mind you, I figured it's not a common thing out of Earth boundaries. I mean, even here, there's a lot of people who don't celebrate it.", Samaëlle asked.
"I'm the last of my species. And.... Now you're the only human being I like. So, no. No one'ss waiting for me up there.", he answered slowly.
"I'm on my own too. I mean, my foster parents are still alive, but they're very busy. For example, right now they're on a business trip in Madrid. And I don't have friends either."
"Weird. You're nice and a good person....."
"Maybe. But not interesting enough, too weird and nerdy to ave friends. Oh, there was Cassie and Gabe in primary school, but we lost contact a long time ago. 'Been on my own ever since, and it's not all bad, you know ? Better alone than in bad company.", she said with a slight smile. "Anyway, it's Christmas and I don't like it, but the rest of the world is having fun. We're not gonna be the only ones alone and bored !", she added.
She got up and went to the kitchen, glancing in the fridge.
"Huh. Not much, but that'll do. Hey, Doc ! Up for a sandwich-fest ?"
"Yes !!", he answered, and got up to join her, beaming. "But hey, isn't it gonna scare your parents to see me here ?"
"Nope, they're not here to tell me off and they didn't even call me today. Besides, even though at the beginning you were in some sort of coma, you just saved the Earth. And it appears it's not the first time, so no problem. And we get along quite well, I reckon, you don't seem to have bad intentions, so it's all good for me."
Their sandwiches put together, they went back on the couch.
"So. There's still something tickling my brain. You know my name is Samaëlle Maitland, or Ellie, or even Sam if you want, but I don't know much about you. You're the Doctor. Okay. But Doctor in what ? And what's your name ?", the young human asked.
"Doctor in..... about everything, I guess. And that's my name. The one I use."
"... Sure. And how old are you ? I mean, with the whole regeneration thing, you gotta be older than you look, right ?"
"Around 900 years old. It's my tenth body, my tenth regeneration."
"Damn. So, d'you mind if I call you Decem every now and then ? Means 'ten' in Latin."
"I'm okay with that."
"Great !"
A few minutes went by without anyone speaking, then Samaëlle turned on the telly to see what kind of consequences the recent events had.
".... Wow. Remind me never to upset you, will you ?", the teenager said, half-amused half-impressed as she saw the news announcing the Prime Minister's downfall 'because of her health'. The Doctor simply nodded. Then :
"Ellie, look", he said while pointing towards the garden.
Some grey-ish snowflakes were swirling in the wind, slowly falling on the grass. Samaëlle got up, her grey eyes wide open. She hated Christmas, but the snow had always fascinated her. The two got up, went outside, and noticed that something was off.
"It's not cold enough for snow, is it ? Besides, it's too grey.", Samaëlle remarked, already knowing the answer.
"This.... is all that's left from the spaceship, disintegrating in the atmosphere. It's not snow, you're right. These are ashes."
"How nice", Samaëlle answered veeeeeeerry ironically.
"It's a new Earth now. Mankind doesn't ignore the existence of other life forms anymore. Everything is new."
"That's gonna be interesting. So, what are you gonna do next ?"
"Back in the T.A.R.D.I.S., as usual."
"All alone ?"
"Why, don't you wanna come ?", he asked her with a smirk.
"Are you kidding ? Of course I wanna come ! Besides, you owe me. Who knows what could've happened if I didn't take care of you while you were under. I'm just gonna take my stuff ! And don't even think about leaving without me, or I swear I'll find you again and I'll let Roselyne wander around on your face while you're asleep. "
That being said, she left a quite scared Doctor and dashed to her room, grabbed her best Darth Vader backpack ; put some clothes, her favorite book and something to eat for her Roselyne, which she put back in her pocket. She went back downstairs in a hurry, and joined the Doctor in his phone box.
"So, where to ?", she asked, her eyes (litteraly) full of stars.
"You tell me. We can go anywhere in the Universe, no matter where.... or when."
"Hold up. It's time-travel machine too ? Awesome ! But not that surprising, come to think of it."
"Yes it is ! Didn't I tell you ? Anyway, we can go anywhere. Any preferences ?"
"I trust you. But it better be awesomazing !"
The Doctor grinned like a kid, pulled a lever, and this so peculiar sound of mechanical breathing rose from the spaceship.
"To infinity and beyond !"
