A Toast

Life and Death shared wine at the table. Glasses that were once full to the brim were now half empty.

Death set her glass down on the glass table, running her finger around the brim in a circular motion. A bored look settled in her dark eyes.

She had black hair that fell down a little past her shoulders, curly about halfway to the end and pale skin. She wore a black dress that was floor length with dark gray and white intricate designs. A blood-red jewel gleamed on her neck, connected by a silver chain.

She sighed as Life brought the glass to his mouth to take a sip of his wine, a smile playing at the edge of his lips.

He had blond hair, a shade of dark skin, and green eyes that sparkled with amusement. He wore a golden suit that was showered in shining buttons and a matching gold watch on his wrist.

Life set the glass down and chuckled.

"My dearest Death, whatever has you so empty this evening?" He asked, flashing his signature grin. Death was silent for a moment. "You look as if the wine you tasted was sour, which is impossible. My wine is the finest wine to ever reach one's lips."

"Patience." She replied, ignoring the last part. "Patience has me empty tonight."

"Patience." Life repeated, putting his hands together in his lap. "Is it not jealousy that has you upset?"

"I am not upset, merely...calm." Death exclaimed, her finger continuing its motion around the brim, this time creating a ringing sound. The wine rippled slightly.

"My dear, I just thought you were upset because the humans worship me."

"There's no need to step on one's hands while he's already hanging onto the edge." Death retorted through Life's smirk.

Yes, the humans. Little creatures, full of energy. They lived, the respected Life, worshipped him entirely. No one had any reason to have Death involved.

Besides, who in their right mind wanted to die, while life sounded so much better? Who would want to lie dead in the fields, buried, instead of laughing in the sunshine? No one, that's who. Or maybe...not yet.

Life's smirk faded as Death began to smile.

"Were you expecting me to be?"

"Well I can't say I'm not disappointed." Life sighed. "We have always been, how you say, equals. I think that it's about time that one of us has the upper hand, my dear."

He took Death's hand in his, and her other hand stopped circling the glass.

"Patience, Life. My time will come. But for now, enjoy your reign."

"As you say, my love."

Green eyes met black, as their glasses clinked. A toast, it was. A toast to the living, the dead, and the finest wine in the world.
