Chapter Four
The group shortly arrived at Ms Kelley's house, Max heading inside to gain some insight that would hopefully benefit them while the only other thing the rest of them could do was wait. Maggie sat in the backseat, with Steve and Dustin in the front, absentmindedly staring out of the window, her mind slowly cycling through the immense depth of knowledge she had been privy to over the last day or so.
It was hard to believe that so much stuff had happened right below her feet and she would still be none the wiser if she hadn't interrupted that conversation at the Video Store. She wondered what Dolores would say if Maggie revealed the truth the next time she saw her, it probably wouldn't be pretty. She sighed when she thought about her job and despite it currently being her day off, it was something she would eventually have to combat.
What she had said to Nancy was true, she truly didn't know why she was here or what was keeping her around. Yet she still didn't want to bail on her new friends, who had already done so much for her and besides she wanted to make sure that Eddie stayed safe, she knew her sister would have some strong words if she didn't.
"Okay. She's in." Steve said, as Max finally entered the house, turning back to Dustin who was riding shotgun.
"I'm missing collarbones, not eyes," Dustin replied sarcastically, before falling into silence. After a few moments, he cleared his throat asking a question hesitantly. "So, we gonna talk about...it?"
"Huh? Sorry, talk about what?" Steve asked, throwing himself back into the conversation.
"Your temporary insanity earlier today when you basically threw yourself at Nance?" Dustin returned.
Steve's eyes quickly flicked up to the rearview mirror. "That's not what happened."
"Pretty sure that's what happened." Dustin continued. "It was public. There were a lot of witnesses. It was weird."
"You implying I still have a thing for Nance?"
"No, not at all. You see I had a bit of a chat with Robin and she revealed some very interesting things." Dustin revealed, his eyes darting up to the rearview mirror that framed Maggie in the backseat. Steve caught his eye, giving Dustin a look that screamed don't you dare.
"She thought I could maybe knock some sense into you. Cause I don't understand why you would suddenly be throwing yourself at Nance, whether you think you did or not. When you've got a much better option right in front of you. Besides your relationship with Nancy is super dead." Dustin continued. "Am I slightly right?"
"I don't wanna talk about it." Steve returned, his eyes watching to make sure Maggie wasn't listening in to their conversation. "And you are not right even in the slightest."
"You're bright red in the face right now." Dustin pointed out.
"I'm not." Steve retorted. "I'll punch you so hard your teeth will fall back out."
"Whoa. Too far." Dustin returned.
Steve paused, staring at Dustin. "Not cool. Sorry."
"Not cool. It's okay." Dustin agreed, both of them nodding in a silent agreement before fist-bumping.
"Guys, she's coming back," Maggie interjected, sitting up straighter as Max hurried across the street towards them.
"What'd she say?" Dustin asked as Max got into the car.
"Nothing, just drive." Max urged.
"Nothing?" Maggie questioned, looking over to Max.
"Steve, drive," Max called urgently as the car quickly drove down the residential street.
The group were on the way back to Hawkins High School, to search through Ms Kelley's files on the victims. With Max having gained no insight in person when talking with the counsellor, she had resorted to her stealing her keys instead when suddenly a voice that Maggie couldn't recognise flooded through Dustin's walkie-talkie.
"Dustin, do you copy?"
"Lucas? Where the hell have you been?" Dustin asked.
"Who is Lucas?" Maggie muttered quietly, no one bothering to answer her question as they were all too focused on the walkie-talkie call.
"Just listen." Lucas pleaded from down the line. "Are you looking for Eddie?"
"Yeah, we found him, no thanks to you."
"You found him?"
"A boathouse on Coal Mill Road." Dustin returned. "Don't worry. he's safe."
"You guys know he killed Chrissy, right?"
Dustin scoffed, shaking his head in disagreement. "That's bullshit. Eddie tried to save Chrissy."
"Then why do all the cops say he did it?"
Max reached forward, snatching the device from Dustin's hands. "Lucas, you're so behind it's ridiculous, okay? Just meet us at school. We'll explain later."
"I.... I can't." He stuttered. "I think some real bad shit's about to go down."
"What are you talking about? What bad shit?" Max asked, looking down at the radio that was only emitting static. "Lucas? Lucas?"
