Chapter Five
Unlike yesterday, the day dragged by. It took ages to even get to science- and that's only third period. I was drained by then, so you can imagine how I felt when Butters decided to talk my ear off.
I hummed in agreement to whatever he said, resting my head in my arms. After a few minutes, his voice became white noise to me and I started to drift off. Of course, my sleep was soon disturbed.
"McCormick!"
"Huh?" I looked up, seeing the teacher standing in front of our desks. She gave me one of those irritated smiles- y'know, the one's that say 'Do that again and I'll kick your ass'? Yeah, one of those.
She bent down so she was at my level and said sweetly, "Please don't fall asleep in my class."
I nodded sleepily and sat up. While doing so, my hood slipped off my head. It took me a minute to notice it had fell, but when I did I tugged it back onto my head. No one needs to see the bird's nest that is my hair.
The teacher walked off and Butters gave me a sympathetic look. "I was gonna let ya sleep, but oh well."
"Yeah, yeah..." I grumbled, rubbing at my eyes. "Now, what were you saying?"
He grinned and dove right back into the subject. I paid attention this time around, just so if he asked me something I could answer. As he talked, I noticed some quirks of his that slipped past me beforehand.
Like how he tapped his pen on the desk when he was excited. Or that his gaze landed on something for a few seconds before moving on to something else. Or that his smile never faltered.
The little things.
These "little things" grabbed my attention for some reason, and I found myself smirking whenever he did one of them. I had no idea why they did, but I was too tired to question it.
I kept noticing more and more of these little details as class went on, and I eventually realized how strange it was. "What the hell's gotten into me...?"
Before I knew it, the bell for next period rang. Butters quickly stood up and slung his bag over his shoulder. "So, I'll see ya after school?"
I nodded, standing up with him. "Yeah... See you then..."
He flashed me his signature smile as he walked out of the classroom. I followed him out, slipping my bookbag onto my back. Something sparkly caught my attention and I glanced up.
I saw the sparkle coming from part of Butters' bag. With a closer look, I realized it was a glittering Hello Kitty keychain.
I shook my head, a smirk tugging at my lips. "Still into that, I see..."
As I slipped into my next class, it registered that that was another minor detail about Butters I had noticed. Stifling a sigh, I took a seat by a window and stared out of it. "Maybe these little things I'm noticing are a sign... But for what?"
