Chapter Four: I Almost Drowned in a Puddle

I woke to a blood-curdling scream, reverberating and sending a shudder down my spine.

I jumped up to see light. Which was quite strange because dawn had not cracked yet. I hear a loud shot, as I creep out of the room, the bag in my belt.

There's crimson all over the room, as the metallic smell makes me gag I look for the direction of the shot. I hide.

I hear a disembodied voice in the background, screaming out, 'Run!  Go! They're coming! THEY'RE HERE!'  The voice choked out with a gurgle and I run.

I run and run and run.

They found us. We have been compromised.
What's gonna happen next? I worriedly thought.

As I ran, I felt a sharp shooting pain in my left leg. I slowed down, gasping in pain I held back my tears. I wasn't going to give up so soon.

I crawled through the thick bushes, hoping to escape. I felt the bushes scratch at my wound and rip at my hair, now matted.

I didn't hear them anymore, so instead of worrying about speed, I focused on my breathing. In and out. In and out. My breathing started to speed up and hitch as the adrenaline calmed down, and my leg began throbbing.

I felt my leg gushing blood through my trousers as the bushes started to thin. They were opening up to a secluded little clearing. The sun started to rise, but it was still pretty dark. I looked around to see if there was anywhere I could rest.

As I walked I fell forward a step going down into a cold pit. I realized a little too late that it was a creek.

I fell and choked on the water, the frozen liquid stuck in my lungs. I had to expel it. I coughed and coughed trying to get it out of my lungs and not get found by the Faeries.

The shot wound in my leg stung from the salty water, I clenched my hands so hard they started bleeding. The pain was unbearable.

Wow look at you, is this how you really want to die? Hypothermia? You could at least try to die from something... You should've just died in the war. That vicious voice in the back of my head taunted me. You're not worthy.

I pushed the voice away with a groan and I looked inside the magic pouch the older woman gave me, hoping for something good.

I found the strip of cloth and tightly wrapped it around my leg as a bandage, trying to ignore the throbbing pain that was shooting up the side of my body.
