Chapter 10: A Safe Escape
Brielle POV
I jumped off the balcony, the ground springy enough not to hurt, and I dashed towards the forest. I couldn't hold it in anymore, my body tensed up as I finally reached the forest, all the stress flowed away.
The forest was beautiful, with wild berries and tall, towering trees of many kinds.
I walked through the forest, the branches creaking and the floor crinkling as I jumped over a fallen tree. The birds sang, and the sun shined throughout the forest. Squirrels scampered while the frogs croaked. I inhaled the earthy scent and closed my eyes, imagining I was back home in the forest by the cabin. The trees would sway in the wind, berries and mushrooms grew everywhere. I opened my eyes, to see a glinting surface on the horizon.
I saw a pond, and as I walked up to it I saw something looking back at me.
A sense of fear washed over just as the sounds forest became dead-still.
It was the old fortune-telling lady from before. Her face hung haggard and oddly, as her eyes were black and face sallow. A foggy mist escaped from her mouth as she talked.
"They hear you at night. They see you, though their eyes are shut. They are here but don't serve a purpose." Her head hung as if the weight was too much for her dainty shoulders to bear. She called my name, her head violently cocking to the side as the pond rippled away. Now, it was just a reflection of me on top of the murky pond.
A thick fog overcame the forest, the swirling vapour pressing in on all sides. It started to become harder and harder to breathe. I had to fight for breath, but I was slowly losing.
The winds started to whistle my name over and over again, just as she did.
Brielle.
I fell into a protective stance as that same familiar glow emanated from my skin. Pain rushed up to my sides, then my head as it encased my whole body. I felt paralyzed in the frozen forest. The calls started to fade, as did my powers. The adrenaline slowed down, and I fell down onto the plush grass flooring, unscathed.
Brielle. It sang out, rolling the 'r'.
I ran as fast as I could, out of the forest as a sense of calm washed over me. I jumped and climbed all the way up to my carved wooden balcony, grabbing onto the bars for support, I hoisted myself up.
Exhaustedly I swung the door open and quietly shut it behind me.
