A Taste of Heaven
"This is the second time, Maria Christi. If this happens again, I swear to God, I will-" Leti shoved her stuff back into her bag and groaned in frustration.
How ironic. Here she goes, swearing to God while wearing a bright-white angel wings costume. Because of her sister's late-night escapades, she might have to become a fallen angel soon.
"Aalis ka na ba talaga?" A friend wearing a Sailor Moon costume asked her.
Another friend chimed in. "The fun's just about to start!"
She sighed and tiredly smiled at them. "Ya'll know I can't enjoy things like this while my sister is out there doing God knows what."
Fixing the wings from her back, she grabbed her bag and waved them goodbye.
It's such a shame. Just a moment ago, nag e-enjoy s'ya habang kasama ang mga kaibigan sa isang most awaited Halloween Party, spearheaded by one of their colleagues. Now she's strutting away like a mother cat searching for her lost kitten.
"Ingat! Baka makasalubong ka ng multo sa daan!"
"Or if you came across a devil, make sure not to fall in love, our dear angel!"
Leti shook her head and chuckled at their antics.
Like hell, I would.
When she got out of the venue, she looked around and saw a few cabs passing by. It's not too dark for a starless night - nearing dawn, because of the bright city lights so she easily found her way to a safe waiting place.
She grabbed her phone from her bag and started booking a ride. Mabuti na lang, bagong sweldo s'ya kahapon at nagagawa n'yang magliwaliw during her day offs.
After a few minutes, her ride finally came. She opened the door leading to the back seat and sighed loudly when she was seated comfortably.
"Drop off location: Adelaide Street, Jones Colosseum. Please confirm, Ma'am." The driver spoke to her.
She looked out the window and nonchalantly answered. "Yes."
The driver pursed his lips, stopping himself from smiling too much as he maneuvered the car. He stole a glance at her in the convex mirror and his eyes softened.
Leti, unaware of the eyes fixed on her, closed her eyes and massaged her temples. There was heavy traffic ahead. "And could you please drive a little faster? Thank you."
I know it's pointless but I badly want to scold my troublesome sister. That's what I wanted to do right now and nothing more.
The man from the driver's seat grabbed the clutch and raised it. He glanced at her in the mirror once more before turning his attention back to the road.
"Jones Colosseum? There's a Halloween Concert happening tonight in there." He said, attempting to make a conversation.
Leti lazily blinked and sighed. "Yeah. I need to get there as soon as possible."
"Alone?"
She shrugged and fixed her hair, putting the loose strand at the back of her ear. "With my guardian angel? I guess?"
She heard him chuckle. Leti's heart strangely throb as she blinked it away. Her brain started to slowly process an old memory from the back of her head.
"But you're already an angel, though? I don't think you still need to be guarded." The man said and stepped on the brake gently when they reach an intersection.
Leti glanced at the man in the driver's seat but is unable to see his face properly. She squinted her eyes and stared at his nape.
"How about being escorted by a devil?" He asked.
She watched his every move - the way he grab the steering wheel, the way his fingers tap above it, and the way he touch his collar every now and then.
It can't be.
A lightning bulb.
Trying not to panic, she wandered her eyes at the front seat and felt his eyes fixed on her. She met him and before she could even gasp, he widely smiled.
"Wouldst thou take a path aroint from heaven with a nasty Beelzebub such as me?"
Leti tried her best to stop her eyes from going wide. She unconsciously clenched when she heard those familiar phrases.
Her memory started showing her some moments from her past. Two of them are standing on a stage with a bright spotlight focused on only just them. The boy stared into her eyes and into her lips. He leaned closer and their lips touched-
Blinking fast, she cleared her throat and looked away from him.
She fixed her posture and forced a smile. "So, it's you, huh?"
The man laughed. "The one and only Evan Myers, Ma'am."
He hit the gas when the light turned green and the car started moving again. On the other hand, something just hit every chamber of the heart as her system threatens to stop from functioning. She forced a smile but for some reason, it was too heavy to lift her lips up.
Not knowing what to say, Leti cleared her throat and prepared herself for the best act she would do.
Carefully, she stood from her seat. She crouched down so her head wouldn't hit the headliner. Evan was about to protest at her actions but she quickly move to seat at the shotgun.
She faced him and smiled widely. "Ikaw nga! Kailan ka pa dumating?"
Evan smiled at the way she looked surprised. "Just yesterday. Pumunta ako sa inyo kahapon kaso sabi ni Tita, mag o-overtime ka raw."
Leti pouted and crossed her arms, leaning back in the seat. "'Coz it's Friday. I need to go all out at every end of weekdays for additional bucks."
Evan stared at her for a moment before shaking his head and smirking. "What a hard-working woman you are."
She doesn't retort back. Instead, she stared at his side profile - unable to know what she should feel at the moment. Why are we acting like we didn't see each other for just a week?
Leti looked away and bit her lip. Her tears threatened to fall but she blinked them away.
Bakit parang... wala s'yang pinagsisisihan?
Evan glanced at her and down at the hand that was resting above her lap. He stretched his arms and gently gripped it. "How are you, Leti?"
Leti looked away from the window and stared at his hand that was gripping hers. Her lips formed a small smile as she looked at him.
"For the past 3 years, I was able to have a stable job. Graduated na si Christi from college at ayon, nagliliwaliw ang loka, in every chance she gets. Kaya papunta ako ngayon sa colesseum para pagalitan s'ya." She sighed in frustration and chuckled along with him.
Their short little laughter rang as if they are harmonizing with each other.
Leti nodded slowly, remembering her life for the past year without him.
"I am slowly... becoming someone I wanted to be."
Lies.
She swallowed hard. Her hands started to tremble.
Evan smiled at what she had said and sighed contentedly. He stared at her for a second before focusing back on the road.
Three long years of longing for someone who just vanished in one cold night.
Leti remembered her past self from that year. She was wearing a fancy dress she just bought after their successful stage play. Holding a wrapped gift, she breathes deeply - preparing herself for something that she always wants to do but can't.
But when she had enough courage to do it, she didn't waste any more time.
She went to his house, still wearing the angel costume.
"Huh? Evan? Oh, he just left with his Mom a while ago! Bumalik na sila sa Pilipinas."
Heartbreak. She learned the whole definition of it on that very night in October.
There was a deafening silence between them. As if the tension started to whistle in the cramped space they were in. Leti gripped the hem of her dress. She leaned her head on the window and bit her lip.
"As for me, I had a great life. Those years are full of nothing but growth and self-development." Evan chuckled. "You don't know how proud I am of myself for achieving such things."
Leti closed her eyes. Good for you, then.
"There's so much realization. So much has changed. For good."
She closed her eyes tighter. That's nice.
A lone tear finally escaped from her eye.
"It's all thanks to you, Leti." Even gently said.
Leti opened her eyes wide. What?
Evan maneuvered the car when they reached the venue. The loud music blasted from every corner of the colosseum and it could even be heard outside.
He carefully parked the car. While doing so, he started to reminisce some memories. "Remember that kiss we shared during our stage play? I didn't expect you to agree with it since you won't let other boys do it."
Evan successfully parked the car.
"It's definitely life-changing: that kiss. I wonder why did you agree to do it with me though-"
He didn't manage to finish what he was saying when he saw Leti's teary face. Leti stared at him as the tears started to fall as if they won't ever stop.
Evan felt his blood run cold. "L-Leti? W-Why are you crying-"
"You wonder?" She asked, stopping him from uttering a word.
"Glad to know that you're aware of me being picky to those who I will kiss." She leaned closer to him and gave him a glare. "Sa tingin mo ba hahalikan kita kung hindi kita gusto?"
Evan froze from his spot.
Leti took the chance to escape from the tension. She immediately got out of the car, slamming the door with all her might.
She could still recall how soft they were against hers even after a long time. It lingers. Every single thing about Evan still lingers in her heart, in her mind... on her very lips.
"Leti!"
From her back, Evan caught up to her and grabbed her arm - making her face him.
Leti looked away and tried to remove her arm from his grasp. "Let me go, Evan."
"No, please." He gripped, it a little tighter.
Leti closed her eyes and looked down. She watched her tears fall, one by one. She pulled her arms ways from him but to no avail.
"Please, please, just listen to me first. Leti!"
Evan shakily engulfed her in his arms. He kissed her hair and breath deeply. "Leti, that kiss... after that kiss, I realized many things."
He pulled away and kissed her forehead before caressing her cheeks. "You know how troublesome I was during our college days, right? My parents even gave up on me. But when we shared a kiss on that stage, para akong natauhan."
"I suddenly want to become a better person. A better man. The urge was so strong that I left with my Mom immediately just like what she always wanted. I grew up and changed." He added.
Evan closed his eyes and dropped his head above her shoulder. "I did it not just for me, but for you. You're the only person in my mind for the past years, Leti. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry if I left you without a word."
He immediately embraced her and caressed her head. "I love you, Leti."
Leti, overwhelmed by what she heard, freed her sobs.
"I love you, you devil!" she screamed against his broad chest.
She gripped her shirt and continued to sob like a child. "I wanted to tell you that but when I went to your house, you were already gone! You disappeared like the wind! How dare you!"
Evan hugged her tighter as he let her cry in his arms. He pursed his lips as guilt started to eat his heart. Leti landed a few weak punches on his chest and he let her. When she calmed down, Evan wiped her tears and smiled at her. Unlike before, there wasn't a hint of sadness in those eyes anymore.
He hugged her again.
"Leti?"
"Hmm?"
"Should we reenact the scene?"
Smiling, Leti pulled away from the hug and stared at him. When she cleared her throat, Evan knew she was going to do it.
"What endues mine dear Beelzebub hither on a time thus?"
Even though her voice sounds hoarse from crying, to Evan, she still sounded lovely as she was before.
He leaned closer and caressed her cheeks. "To haste some few taste of heaven."
Their lips met, just as before. But this time, without any scripts, without any limits, without any doubts.
Just hearts in one rhythm.
