Briar was kinda annoyed. Your power goes out one time, and now you're stuck in the mirror void while your reflection, oh sorry, changeling match is wandering around with your life. Not to mention she barely can tell what the mirror void is, as she stumbles about in the pitch black, seeing silvery thorns and glimpses of dark forests beyond. Still, she soldiers on, tripping over roots and following the glowing thorns. The mirror void is dark and dangerous to mortals, is what her challenging match said. Very few have ventured there and returned. Briar wasn't entirely sure why yet, but she knew better than to say that out loud.
Finally, after trudging long and hard through the dark forest, Briar arrives right in front of the glowing thorns. To her shock, not only do they glow silver, but small silver pocket watches hang from each thorn, each ticking to a different tune. Entranced, Briar reaches toward one of them, trying to grab it, when the thorn suddenly retracts. It goes deeper into the tangle of thorns, revealing even more clocks, this time not only pocket watches, but hour glasses and grandfather clocks and wristwatches and sundials and oh so many more than Briar had never even heard of before.
Briar gasps in awe of the clocks, each ticking a different time, each tocking a different tune, falling differently and yet the same all at once. Then she sees the one she reached for, and surges forward, getting scrapes from the little thorns, which she barely notices. The pocket watch continues to retract, heading further and further away as Briar runs faster and faster, desperate to keep up.
Without any warning, the pocket watch suddenly stops moving. Briar pants, quickly stopping herself from almost running into the thorns and scratching her eyes out. She looks at the pocket watch. It has her name on it. Or rather the inverse of it. Lorena Briar, it says, of Rank Assassin and family Fable. Briar stumbles back in immediate concern. Assassin? Her changeling match was an assassin?
"But how?" Briar whispered. "And why?" A sudden rustle goes through the thorn bush, a breeze causing it to move. A whisper echoes, Go and Find out.
Common sense would tell her to stop. Figure things out first. But Briar had an affliction better known as Main Character, so common sense was pretty uncommon. So, seeing a still lake like surface, she immediately did what the voice suggested. And she ran head first into pool of dark light.
