Backstory: Ian was born in Fairfax in 1762, in the then British colony of Virginia. The son of staunch British loyalists, he became very angry with the Crown for it's treatment of the colonies. He joined the Continental Army in 1778 at age 16. In 1781, Ian- now a Lieutenant-was mortally wounded at the Battle of Yorktown. As he lay dying, he was saved by Kalen Mikaelson, who fed Ian some of his blood after the Original struck a deal with Ian's father, Andrew.The next day however, Ian again died In battle, with Kalen's blood in his system, Ian started to Transition. Kalen found him and revealed to Ian that in exchange for saving his life, his father agreed to be turned by Kalen as well, this convinced Ian to fully transition. Kalen also turned Ian's sister, Delia, who was one year his junior, so the family could remain together.

Father and son and daughter spent the next several decades with their new master, traveling the world and learning the ways of the vampire. Around the year 1800, Kalen determined that Andrew and his two kids learned all they could and allowed the family to leave his service and go on their own.
