Chapter Twenty
SOPHIA WRIGHT
------------------------------------
It's been days since Ken confessed to me. School's over and I arrived at the parking lot but I didn't see any sign of him. I sighed and someone patted me on my shoulder.
"Why so down?", he asked.
"Nothing for you to worry about.", I replied. Ken smiled at me for some reason which made me think he was a little bit creepy.
"Hey, since we're both free, how about we go grab some crepes?", he offered but I wasn't feeling up to it.
"Not today. I have to go. See you next week!", I said as I walked away and I never looked back. While I was walking along the streets, I saw a boy looking at a couple sitting at a cafe in which this couple noticed the boy's stare.
"They'll think you're a creep and call the cops.", I told him from behind and he turned around. Judging from his uniform, he must be from another private high school. He's kind of cute.
"Oh. I was just observing them.", he replied. Observing? More like staring at them like a creep.
"Really? Okay, that's not my business. I was just bringing you back to reality.", told him. He looked at me and I suddenly felt concious.
"Now I'm the one you're observing?", I asked.
"No. I'm staring at you. You're pretty.", he said. What the?! Ehh? Why am I freaking blushing?! Stop it! Stop with the flattering!
"I'll take that as a joke.", I replied. He shook his head and looked at me again.
"What?!", I asked. I was starting to get flustered.
"I was complimenting you.", he replied. I've had it with this guy! I cleared my throat and I sighed.
"Fine. Whatever. Bye.", I said and I walked right past him. I'm already in a foul mood and I don't want it to get any worse than this. I decided to kill time by window shopping until I suddenly heard the sound of a piano. I followed the sound and I ended in front of a music store.
"Was this here? I never noticed this until now.", I talked to myself. Curiosity got the best of me and I went in. The smell of wood and dust floated around the place. It was a musical instrument store. I looked around. The instruments looked a bit old. I jumped in shock when somebody tapped my shoulder. Seriously, what's with the shoulder?!
"How may I help you?", an old man asked. I panted to catch my breath since the old man scared the heck of me.
"I heared a piano. The sound led me to this place.", I replied.
"I'll continue practicing grandpa!", a voice of a boy shouted from the other side.
"Alright. We have a costumer. Impress this one and we might catch something today!", the old man said.
"Was that your grandson?", I asked.
"He called me grandpa. Does that mean anything else?", the old man asked.
"I'm sorry.", I apologized. I heard the tune again. It's making me hypnotized. I followed the tune and I ended up seeing the same guy I saw awhile ago playing the piano in front of my eyes. So he's a pianist??
"Lovely.", I uttered. It looked like he heard me since he stopped playing.
"It's you again.", he said.
"Yeah.. I guess it is.", I replied.
"Do you know each other?", the old man asked and the boy nodded.
"I saw her just awhile ago.", the boy replied.
"Ah! You've met a pretty young girl, Jordan.", the old man said. Jordan? So that's his name. Uh huh.. did I just see Jordan blush? What? Is he some kid? Wait, like I don't even blush. I mentally slapped myself.
"Anyway, I have to go.", I said.
"Have you already looked around the shop?", Jordan asked.
"Not really.", I replied.
"Please do and tell me if you found something that interests you.", Jordab said. I just agreed and looked around the different musical instruments inside the shop. It's pretty amazing. I came across some violins, celo, and a whole lot more. But there was this one instrument that caught my attention.
"100 dollars?", I muttered.
"That's actually the flute that I made.", Jordan said.
"You made this?!", I surprisingly asked. He chuckled and took the flute.
"I did. It took me 5 years to make it.", he replied.
"Then why are you selling it?", I asked.
"I think that something is unusual about that flute. Still, I don't regret selling it.", Jordan replied. Aww, it's such a waste to let some random customer to buy this nice instrument. Then an idea came to me. I took out my wallet and I gave Jordan 100 dollars.
"You're buying it?", Jordan asked.
"Yeah. I don't know what to do with this though but I don't want to let some random stranger buy this.", I replied. Look who's talking. Like you're not a random stranger Sophia. Get real.
"Really? Thank you. I hope you can find that flute useful.", Jordan said as he took the money and he gave it to his grandpa.
"Someone finally bought it.", Jordan happily told his grandpa.
"Finally.", the old man said.
"May I ask why?", I asked.
"That flute's been there for more than two years. I'm an honest person so whenever I tell the costumers about what I had told you earlier, they would make these awkward excuses to go out of the store. Once they're out, they don't come back.", Jordan explained.
"Here you go young lady.", the old man said.
"Sophia. My name is Sophia Wright.", Introduced myself.
"Nice to meet you.", both of them said simultaneously.
"I have to go. Bye.", I said as I held onto the bag and rushed out of the shop. I was walking on my way home when I thought, how on earth do I use this thing?! I sighed.
"Well, maybe I should just put this on display at my room.", I said to myself. I kept walking and I saw Florence walking in the distance. I was about to call out to him but I hesitated. Why did I just hesitate?! I closed my eyes and sighed.
"I didn't know that I'd bump in to you here.", Florence said. I opened my eyes and looked at his face. It's been awhile since we both came face to face with each other. It's been awhile. When did we last spend time together? When did we last be face to face with each other like this? I felt like it has been a long time. Just then, what Ken said to me at the old music room came back to me. Why did it have to come out now? Ugh. I feel like I'm flustering!
"Are you alright? You've been silent the whole time.", he asked. No good. I can't talk.
"Hey.", Florence said. I looked at him.
"Wanna walk with me around the park?", he asked. My heart was suddenly pacing and I felt nervous all of a sudden. I nodded in reply and he started to walk while I followed him from behind.
"How have you been?", he asked. I was silent. We just kept walking until I mustered myself to reply.
"You're asking me like we haven't seen each other in years.", I replied. Woah. That was mean.
"We may have seen each other at school but not being with each other has felt like years.", he said. My eyes widen in realization. It has been cold recently. Winter is coming. Autumn is slowly fading. Florence and I are acting like we're strangers. Why? I don't know.
"I'm sorry.", I said. I couldn't look at him in the face. We're in a middle of a fight yet how can he act like nothing happened? Is he strong? Or am I just weak. Ugh. Because of what Ken said, I'm not able to think clearly. It's so frustrating!
"Why are you apologizing?", he asked.
"Nothing.", I replied. Ugh! This is getting really awkward! We arrived at some place in the park where there lay a beautiful lake.
"What's that?", he asked. Florence was pointing at the bag where tge flute was placed.
"It's just a flute.", I replied.
"Do you even know how to play a flute?", he asked.
"I will practice.", I replied. I gasped. An idea came to me. How about I join the contest at the Music Festival? That isn't a bad idea.
"I'm joining the Music Festival.", I told him.
"Do you even have time to practice when you're failing in Math and Geo?", he asked.
"I will make time! Don't ask me like you were my mom Florence!", I replied. Ah. I snapped.
"I will join the Music Festival and I will pass all the exams next week.", I continued. I saw Florence's back gasp but ever since we started walking, he never looked at me.
"Ah, really? Good luck with that.", was all he said.
"Well, it was nice talking with you. Good luck.", Florence said as he walked away. I didn't budge from where I stood. My heart hurts. It's clenching. Huh? Why am I crying? I sat down on the soft grass and looked at the sparkling lake. Too bad. The lake looks so beautiful yet my heart isn't pretty right now.
