Chapter Fourteen
FLORENCE JOHNSON
---------------------------------
“Let’s go big brother! We’re going to be late.”
“Wait just a sec. Let me just finish this.”
Today we are heading to the beach. Just me, Michael, and Sophia. I’m in charge with the food, as usual, and Sophia’s mom will give us a ride to the beach before heading off for work. I heard Michael shouting and walking towards the door.
“They’re here already. Let’s go!”, Michael shouted. I carried the basket and other things needed and locked the house. Sophia came to me and helped me carry the things.
“Thanks.”, I said.
“No problem. Let’s go.”, she replied. We hopped in to the car and off we went. Michael sat at the front seat while I sat at the back with Sophia. He turned the music on, loud enough for Sophia to place her hands on both of her ears.
“Can you lower the volume? It’s too loud.”, Sophia asked. Unfortunately, Michael and her mom were singing along with the music.
“Gee, thanks a lot.”, Sophia said crossing her arms above her chest and sunk in to her seat.
“Just bear with it Sophia. The beach is not that far.”, I told her. We arrived at the beach.
“I’ll be back later guys. Enjoy!”, Mrs. Wright shouted and off she went.
“Woah. Not much people today.”, Sophia said as she looked around the deserted beach.
“Not much? It’s just us here. Well, the good part is, we own the beach today. Michael, help me set up the grill.”. Michael came rushing and helped me. Sophia went to the shore and stared at the sea water.

SOPHIA WRIGHT
-----------------------------------
I sunk my toes under the warm sand and sat. I touched the gentle rushing waves on the shore and inhaled the refreshing breeze.
"Nothing beats the beach.", I murmured.
"Hey. How's the sand?", I looked behind and my mom bent down and smiled at me.
"It's good actually.", I replied. My mom stood beside me and asked,
"Can I sit beside you?". I nodded and she sat beside me. We were silent for awhile. The rustling of the small waves hitting out toes, the happy screaming of Michael behind us and Florence's scolding in the background.
"How's it going with Florence?", she asked. What's with the sudden question of all things. Of course she knows how Florence and I are doing.
"Of course it's going great. Why?", I asked. We both looked at Florence mending the grill while scolding Michael to calm down. My mom chuckled at the pleasant sight.
"You don't see a guy like him everyday Sophia.", my mom said. What is trying to tell me?
"What do you mean mom?", I asked in curiosity. My mom just smiled and stood up.
"If you start to feel something weird in the future towards him, let me know. I'll give you a hand full. Got that?", she said as she went and approached the two boys. I wonder what she meant. Start to feel somthing weird towards Florence? My very own best friend since four years ago? What could that weird feeling be? I'm curious. I stood up and approached them.
"Hmm. Something smells good.", I said.
"Well of course. This cooking is my specialty.", Florence replied. I sat on the blanket under the umbrella beside him.
"You can play music, take care of a child, you can cook, you're a great friend. You're really amazing, aren't you?", I asked and teased him at the same time. He smiled and flipped the piece of meat.
"Well, not really. It's you that makes me completely amazing.", he replied. Sudden;y, my heart started to pace. I touched my chest and I looked at my mom whom I swear was smirking at me. Was she spying on Florence and I?! Talk about envading privacy. Gosh. Parents these days. I looked away and I gazed at the beach.
"Say, what do you think of me?", I asked. Florence stiffened and I looked at him in wonder. He plastered an awkward smile and said,
"Uh, you're my best friend. What else would I think of you of?". I smiled and I nodded. My mom's wrong. There's nothing weird between me and my best friend.
"I thought so. I guess my mom's just acting weird.", I replied.
"Huh? What are you talking about? You're the one acting weird; talking to yourself and stuff.", he said. I sighed and laid down.
"By the way, why aren't you in a bikini?", my mom asked. I sat up in shock and Florence stood stiffly in shock too.
"Mom!", I yelled.
"Mrs. Wright you really do pop up out of nowhere.", Florence said.
"I'm hungry. Let's eat!", Michael said. Florence served the food on the table and we all sat together. Florence and I sat beside each other while my mom and Michael sat beside themselves.
"Wow. The food's good.", my mom complimented.
"Nah. It's just my ordinary cooking Mrs. Wright.", her replied.
"Talk about specialty.", I frankly said and he awkwardly smiled. My mom wondered what we were talking about and Michael just kept eating.
"Well, I know for a fact that Florence would make a good husband.", my mom said. Florence and I almost choked.
"Stop blabbering mom.", I told her and she just showed me a smirk.
"I'm actually not ready for that yet. I'm still planning to go to college after I graduate.", Florence replied.
"Heh. Well, you better make your move before you graduate young man or you'll regret it.", my mom said. Wait, did Florence like someone? Well, probably not since he tells me everything. Maybe my mom meant something else. Florence laughed and my mom looked at him.
"Well, I'll have to know myself better first Mrs. Wright before I do anything rash.", he replied. My mom just smiled and continued eating. I looked at Florence who looked flustered and embarrassed. I sighed since I didn't understand both of them. We all finished eating.
"All of you go have fun. I'll take care of this.", my mom said. Something just popped out of my mind. I approached my mom wearing a pissed off face.
"Tell me my beloved mother, why are you still here? I thought you were only dropping us off?", I asked her. I felt her startle and Florence innocently agreed with me.
"I ah, I was planning to umm, eat lunch with you three!", my mom said as she ran off to the car, went in and yelled,
"I'll be back before six!", and off she went. Florence and I stood there in a daze.
"Oh, I'll take care of the dishes. You go and play with Michael.", I said.
"Really?", Florence asked. I showed him a thumbs up and he smiled.
"Thanks Sophia!", he said as he ran off to the shore where Michael was and I just smiled at how he can be a child sometimes.
