Chapter 17- Opening Knots

Your meme business is doing great Pranju22!!

The darkness of the sky diluted into a deep blue colour. The air had the smell of a new day but the dawn never came for Bijoy and others waiting for some good news. Asha had been brought to the hospital on time and the blood loss had been severe yet it was managed. Her wounds were tended too. There were multiple fractures in her arm and ribs. The culprit had been caught by the police but no one cared about him until Asha regained consciousness.

Sonakshi was sitting with Samaina and gang. She still had difficulty in figuring out her surroundings. She had had her bouts of vomits. The staff at the hospital looked down at her, like a daughter who never cared for her mother and who could blame them, when she had turned up drunk in the hospital. All her life Sonakshi did the right things to never get her image tainted in the general public's eyes. Alas, when the actual time came people thought what they wanted too!

Dev had left after managing to settle Sona in Sameer's car. He prayed for a speedy recovery, bid goodbyes and left.

When they were granted permission to meet Asha. Bijoy expressed his wish to see her first. Naina wanted to let Sonakshi go first but Swati stopped her. Sonakshi wasn't still in complete hold of her senses and was having a terrible headache.

Bijoy knocked the door of the room Asha had been allotted. It was his old habit to never enter a room where Asha was without knocking.

Asha was expecting Sonakshi. The ex-couple looked at each other in a minute of silence.

"Kaisa lag raha hai ab?" Bijoy initiated the conversation.

"Meri beti kaha hai?" Asha asked him in return.

"Bahar hai." Bijoy couldn't bring himself to tell Asha the truth about Sona's condition. He wanted Sona's upbringing to be one medal in Asha's records.

"Andar kyu nahi aayi? Tumhe pehle usse aane dena chahiye tha."

"Wo andar aane ki halat me nahi hai."

"Matlab?"

"Dard kaisa hai?" Bijoy changed the topic.

"Tumhe pehle meri beti ko andar aane dena chahiye tha." Asha acted as if she hadn't heard his question.

"Wo nahi aayegi. Wo ... Party me usne ... Kuch zyada hi ... She got drunk." Bijoy pursed his lips in anger.

"Ho hi nahi sakta. Sonakshi me koi buri aadat nahi hai. Maine aane hi nahi di." Asha wasn't in best of her physical conditions but she was ready to brag about her upbringing.

Back in the hospital lobby Sonakshi had gained most of her reflexes after she was given glasses of lemonades. She had been vomitting ever since.

It wasn't that she could not understand what was going around. Her understanding of her surroundings had increased manifold since she came to the hospital.

"Maa ko dekhna hai." She pleaded the group. She got up from the chair, without waiting for another response. She dragged her feet to Asha's room. She opened the door slightly and stood behind her parents. They seemed to be fighting. Well, what was new about it?

She strained her eyes and tried to comprehend what they were saying.

"Unbelievable!" Bijoy was shouting. "Tumne usse kabhi bataya nahi! You made me a culprit in my daughter's eyes!"

Sonakshi entered Asha's room. The parent's were horrified if she had heard something. The daughter sat on the sofa cum bed. The truth was she had always seen them fight. So she didn't even bother to ask the reason of the fight. Her state was turning passive and indifferent towards them.

"Jab iska hangover hat jaaye tab tum isse sab bataogi. I can't believe you could do this to me." Bijoy ordered Asha and stormed out of the room.

Sonakshi didn't even care for what was happening. She removed her shoes, threw them and slept on the sofa.

Bijoy came out of the room. He thanked all the children for their help. He requested Sameer to drop everyone home safely.

"Hum rukte hai na." Naina pleaded.

"Beta tum log kal raat se yahi ho. Ghar jao fresh ho jana and then you can come to see her for sure." Bijoy forced a smile and tried to be polite with the kids. "Thank you for everything."

"Ab aap sharminda kar rahe hai." Munna said.

Bijoy didn't know what to do. He gave a gentle, unenthusiastic pat to Munna's back and turned around to leave.

"It was a long night." Swati yawned and when she realised Munna might have seen her in this not so lady like way, she turned her head to the other direction feeling embarrassed.

With heavy, tired steps all six of them left the hospital premises. In silence, they began driving home. Preeti slept on Pandit's shoulder. Swati was looking out of the window wondering what would Munna be thinking about her while Munna was looking out of the window thinking about a strong cup of tea.

Naina, in the rear view mirror, saw Preeti sleeping on Pandit's shoulder with the tagline things are closer than they appear printed on it.

She looked at Sameer. He was tired, exhausted and emotionally drained too. He had been very active and strong throughout the night. She knew what she had to do next.

"Chai ke liye rukte hai na." Munna pointed at a small chai tapri. Sameer nodded and parked his car near the vendor selling tea. They ordered six cups of tea. PreeDit and SwaMun sat near the vendor whilst he made the tea. Sameer decided to sit a little away, on a bench.

Naina saw him basking in the faint sunlight. They hadn't realised but it had rained all night and the roads were empty, wet and clear now. The cool morning breeze was fanning their faces.

Jab koi baat bigad jaaye,
Jab koi mushkil pad jaaye,
Tum dena saath mera o humnava.

Na koi hai na koi tha,
Zindagi me tumhare siva,
Tum dena saath mera o humnava.

She sat next to Sameer. He was aware of her presence but he chose to not make it obvious in the fear that she might run away. He didn't even look at her. His gaze was fixed on his feet.

If he would have seen her, he would have noticed her red, drained and tired eyes which demanded sleep but she had fixed them on him. Her nose was red from the night's crying. She looked nothing short of broken but inside all the exhausted appearance was Naina, the school girl dancing at getting her friend back and the present day Naina was smiling that she had got a better version of him now.

Sameer felt a warm and soft touch in his fingers. He looked down at his hands. Naina had interlocked her little finger with his. He looked up at her to see if it was a mistake but her eyes held so much faith, so much love that he knew that all his efforts had paid off finally.

Ho chandni jab tak raat
Deta hai har koi saath
Tum magar andhero me
Na chodna mera haath

Jab koi baat bigad jaaye,
Jab koi mushkil pad jaaye,
Tum dena saath mera o humnava.

Na koi hai na koi tha,
Zindagi me tumhare siva,
Tum dena saath mera o humnava.

"I'm sorry Sameer." Naina sounded soft and apologetic.

"Naina, tum kyu sorry bol rahi ho?" Sameer wasn't expecting this.

"Mujhe tumhari baat bahut pehle sun leni chahiye thi." She answered in a low voice. "I'm sorry."

"Maine bhi bahut saari galtiyan ki hai par ab agar tum sorry keh rahi ho to haaa." He pretended like he was thinking something hard. "... Haa maine tumhe maaf kiya."

Naina laughed a little. "Thank you."

"I still can't believe this." Sameer was slowly going out of control.

Naina chuckled.

"Toh?" She asked.

"Toh!" He replied in recognition of the reference.

Sameer released his finger from her's. He slowly with a little uncertainity, kept his hand over hers; promising to hold it forever.

Wafadaari Ki Vo Rasmein Nibhayenge Hum Tum Kasmein
Ek Bhi Saans Zindagi Ki
Jab Tak Ho Apne Bas Mein

Wafadaari Ki Vo Rasmein Nibhayenge Hum Tum Kasmein
Ek Bhi Saans Zindagi Ki
Jab Tak Ho Apne Bas Mein

Jab Koi Baat Bigad Jaaye
Jab Koi Mushkil Pad Jaaye
Tum Dena Saath Mera
O Humnawaaz

Na Koi Hai Na Koi Tha
Zindagi Mein Tumhaare Siva
Tum Dena Saath Mera
O Humnawaaz

A long battle had been won. The heart and mind both were in alliance with this choice. There could not have been a better piece to fit each other's heart. Sameer and Naina had began the journey to become SamAina.

Misunderstandings and judgements cloud one's minds. It is always better to see both sides of the coin because half a story may be entertaining and scandalising but it is always harmful.

Half a story.

It was something that Sonakshi knew. Half a story about her father's suppossed betrayal. Half a story about Asha and Bijoy.

There was something that was concealed. There was something unbelievable. There was something that Sonakshi did not know.

Sonakshi woke up on the attendent's sofa cum bed. Her head felt better now. As she let light enter her eyes, she recalled events of the other day. She was all pumped up for the party and then she got drunk. She was talking to Dev about something. He brought her home. Someone told her that her Maa had an accident. Then, she had been there all night with Naina's friends. Then she remembered faint images of her parents fighting. Then ... she slept? Yes that's it. That's what happened.

She saw Asha sitting on the patient's bed with disappointment written all over her.

"Maa how are you?" Sonakshi got up with a jolt but as soon as she was up on her toes she felt giddy and sat back on the sofa.

"Talk to ME, Ms. Bose." Bijoy said in an icy cold voice. "You go to the washroom and remove this alcohol stink from yourself first. Then we have to tell you something."

"Bijoy..." Asha pleaded.

Sonakshi had seen enough drama by her parents. She thought it would be about her rowdy behaviour last night. She saw a bag kept in the corner of the room. She took her clothes, brush and toothpaste.

Inside the washroom she could hear angry whispers of her parents. She could have easily eavesdropped but she opened the shower instead. She had had enough of their fights as a kid. There was no need to hear one more.

"Sonakshi..." Bijoy desperately started talking to her as soon as she was out and dressed.

"Bijoy this is not the time." Asha was shouting.

"We have lost a lot of time already!" Bijoy screamed louder than her.

She screamed, he screamed louder. That was there relation as far as she could remember.

"What is it?" Sonakshi asked Asha.

"Kuch nahi hai beta!" Asha was trying hard to hide the secret. "Tu ye dawai le aa."

Sonakshi was about to take the prescription from her mother, when Bijoy snatched it in a rage.

"Scared, aren't you? Scared to fall in your daughter's eyes? You didn't think twice before assissinating me for her! Even after all you did I trusted you." Bijoy could have burst his voice box.

Sonakshi shook a little. This violence had always affected her.

After requesting a few more times, Asha lost her case and agreed to tell Sona whatever Bijoy wanted.

"You need to know this Sona beta!" Bijoy was serious.

"I don't need to know anything about you two! I have seen enough!" Sona tried to stop him but Bijoy was adamant. He didn't care about the position they were in. He just wanted Sonakshi to know their truth.

Asha and Bijoy had had an arranged marriage. Their parents were happy on catching the best fish they could in their community. Their wedding was a day of celebration and fun for everyone except the bride.

Asha as a young bahu was always quiet. She never showed any interest in Bijoy and the chores related to him or the house as a whole.

Bijoy was a history teacher in middle school. He was a happy man and turned more blissful after his marriage. His wife was a shy woman. She never talked much. She didn't quarrel. She didn't demand gajras and movie dates like other wives did. He had the most docile wife ever. She was extremely silent, so much so that when Bijoy proposed to make love she rested on the bed like a rock.

A year after their marriage Sonakshi was born. With the little kid running around the house, Bijoy started observing changes in Asha. The once docile wife now began smiling alot, she began playing around with the new born. It was like new life had transpired into Asha with Sonakshi. Asha still didn't demand anything from Bijoy or talked to him but with Sonakshi she was a different person.

A few months later, the Das' moved next to them. It was a family of two aged parents and a man of about Asha's age - Aadyot Das.

Asha grew a little more cheerful. She started humming tunes Bijoy had never heard. She started dressing up more extravagantly. A blush always adored her cheeks. Her focus started shifting from Sonakshi.

One day, Bijoy came home to find two year old Sona fallen on the floor crying alone. He called Asha but she was not around. He searched the whole house but she wasn't there. He decided to ask the Das' about her.

Bijoy reached their house. He knocked on the door but his ears met a familiar tune. A song he had heard a lot recently. He heard giggles, he heard some running and catching happening inside. He forced the door open only to find Aadyot hidden in the crook of Asha's neck.

Bijoy ran back home. He locked the door. Asha kept slamming the gate for the entire night with Aadyot at her side but Bijoy didn't melt till dawn. He pulled Asha inside and Aadyot too.

In the fit of his anger he felt like forcing himself on her, right in front of Aadyot or killing Aadyot right in front of Asha's eyes but he settled at a slap on Asha's cheeks.

On questioning, Aadyot and Asha told Bijoy that he was the one who came between the two. They were in love and were planning to elope when Asha's parents forced her into marrying Bijoy. She could not go against her family. Asha was a walking body without any life from that day.

When Aadyot moved next to Asha, she told him to go away. How ever dull things may be, the Bose's were her world now. Aadyot staged a rebellion and the love that never died pulled the two of them in it's roaring fire.

Bijoy was shaken to know the facts. The only thought that he had was of how would that little girl, Sonakshi survive this truth ever? Aadyot offered to keep Sonakshi with him. Asha could bring her daughter and the couple could elope now.

Bijoy demanded to see Aadyot's parents first but he refused saying that they would never agree to the alliance and that he would rather run away than telling them the truth. He could elope but not state the truth. Aadyot told him that his parents will be ashamed of him if he brings them there.

Bijoy wanted Aadyot to take Asha away respectfully so that he wouldn't bear the brunt of having an eloped wife.

Aadyot kept pleading and then he left, not having the courage to fight anyone.

Aadyot made his choice. He left Asha then and there.

Bijoy, Asha and Sonakshi moved to Mumbai. After the rage of that night Bijoy could never be back to being a good husband like he was before Aadyot's truth was revealed. Bijoy's salary wasn't enough to cope up with the needs of their family. Asha started taking tuition classes and found confidence in her independence. She didn't need to listen to Bijoy's bickerings now. Sonakshi grew up to see two quarelling parents.

After a few years when Asha refused to have another kid Bijoy decided to leave that contaminated woman once and for all. He left Sona with her mother in the hope that Asha's already doomed life could have some light.

After a few months of not being aware of Bijoy's whereabouts Asha saw him in a TV show essaying the role of a father.

"Dekha Sona beta! Meri koi galti hi nahi thi." Bijoy shouted with enthusiasm.

Sonakshi's eyes were heavy and were on the floor. The brutality of Bijoy's description had shaken her to the core. The way he had went on to describe the precision of her mom's love affair or the way he described his wish to destroy her mother after the truth was revealed ; she could no longer see either of her parents like she did before.

"Dekha Sonakshi ye aurat, this woman right here, she kept me away from you and made me look bad in your eyes!"

Sonakshi's eyes travelled one last time to Asha's guilty head.

Aadyot Das

How would life be if he would have adopted her? A selfish, shameless question rised in her head.

Aadyot Das.

She kept thinking again and again.

Aadyot Das

A different father. She had the chance to change her Baba once!

The wall of indifference she had built in her head broke brick by brick. She felt pain. She felt an excruciating pain surging in her head.

She looked at the weird hope in Bijoy's eyes and the unreasonable guilt in Asha's.

"Still wanna be with your mom?" The prospect of getting his daughter back was exciting Bijoy.

Sonakshi opened the door of the room and went out.

Precap - "I can't even date her."

And the last ray of hope died.
