*Chapter Five: Thank God for grandmas*

"Who could that be?",I said. I really hoped that those old geezers heard me screaming last night and decided to call the cops.

"Well, there's only one way to find out." Joseph said as he grabbed my wrist and pulled me downstairs.

I walked up to the door and looked through the peephole...but the person that I saw was not the police...it was Grandma Joy.

"Well at least we have some contact with the outside world." I thought.

I opened the door and let her in the house.

"Christina! Joseph! It's been so long since I've seen you both!"

Grandma said as she hugged us tightly. I shut the door behind her and we sat down in the kitchen.

"It's nice to see you too grandma, would you like me to get you something to drink?" Joseph said as he walked towards the fridge.

"Just some orange juice will be fine. My, my Joseph! You have grown so much! I remember when you were just a little baby! You were so cute!"

When I glanced over at Joseph as he was giving grandma her orange juice, I noticed that his face was bright red.

"...thanks grandma..."

Although I was very glad to see Grandma Joy, I wondered why she came at a time like this. Was it a coincidence? Was it fate? Maybe she needed something? What if see wanted to see my parents? What would we tell her?

"Hey grandma?" I said a little hesitantly "It's nice to see you too but, what brings you here today?"

Grandma looked confused. "They didn't tell you? I'm supposed to take care of you two for a week so your parents can spend some well deserved time with each other. Where are they by the way? Usually your mother opens the door when I come over."

Joseph and I stared at each other. We didn't think about what to tell someone if they asked about our parents. I didn't want to tell her everything but...we have no choice.

"Go on Christina...it's okay." Joseph whispered to me.

As I was about to tell her everything, she said something unexpected.

"Well, no matter, I've still got to take care of you two for the week so grab some clothes and let's go!" She sang with a cheery smile.

Joseph and I looked at each other and shrugged.

"I guess we should go along with it." I thought to myself.

We went upstairs and put some clothes in a luggage bag. I looked at my phone and I was about to take it with me when I examined it again.

"Well it's useless to take this now." I said with sadness.

As I closed my bag, Joseph opened my door with his luggage bag in his hand. He walked over to me, dropped his bag and hugged me.

"Don't worry Christina, we'll tell her when we are at her house." Joseph whispered.

And with that,we grabbed our stuff and went downstairs. I grabbed my keys to the front door and we told grandma that we were ready to go.

"I wish I could get the chance to say goodbye to my sweet Mary...but she probably went shopping with your father."

It's a good thing that grandma was oblivious to everything.

After I locked the front door behind us, Joseph and I put our bags in the trunk of grandma's car. Grandma's car had leather seats and good air conditioning so we were going to be okay for now. Joseph and I sat in the back seat, I could have sat in the front but I've gotten a little attached to him so I decided to sit with him. The ride to her house was going to be a long one, I wish my phone battery wasn't gone. The car was quiet until grandma turned on the radio and tuned in to the "oldies but goodies" station.

About thirty minutes into the car ride, I started to get tired of the station that she chose and I tried to fall asleep. It was a good thing that the station was playing a slow song. As the music started playing, I started to nod off, until the singer singing a familiar song.

"Just you know why, why you and I, will by and by, know true love ways."

I'd know that song from anywhere, it's "True Love Ways" by Buddy Holly. He is one of my favorite singers from the 60's. The song was beautiful as always. It was so soothing that I finally drifted off to sleep.

When I woke up, I found Joseph sleeping with his head against the window, and he was holding my hand. I was about to pull my hand away but grandma had finally reached her house. I woke up Joseph and we got our stuff from the trunk.

"So grandma?", Joseph asked as he yawned. "What are we going to be doing here for the week?"

Grandma opened the door to her house and replied,"Well, we can go to the movies and see what's playing, we could go shopping, or anything else that you guys might want to do."

I went upstairs and found a spare room where I could crash for the week...probably the rest of my life if we tell grandma what happened.

It's about dinner time now I'm just sitting on the bed in the spare room. I can smell the sent of spaghetti flowing through the air while I draw pictures of random things like flowers, dogs, and food. I was about to make the finishing touches when Joseph walked in.

"Christina?"

I knew what he was going to ask by the look on his face.

"We will tell her...after dinner."

"Christina!"

"What? I want her to give us food first...I'm hungry."

"Fine...we eat first then we tell her..."

And with that, we walked downstairs to a delicious dinner with my friends, spaghetti and the meatballs, served with a side of mashed potatoes, baby carrots, and Mac n' cheese. I was in heaven.

After dinner, like I said I would do so, I got grandma's attention and asked her to listen to what I have to say.

"What is it my dear Christina?" Grandma Joy said curiously.

"Well..."

It was kinda hard to tell even my own grandma. I looked over to Joseph for reassurance, he nodded and I took a deep breath.

"A couple nights ago, when my parents started fighting...my...father...came into my...room and...he...he...he rapped me..."

I started to burst out in tears and I went to hug grandma for comfort, but when I tried to wrap my arms around her, I found myself hugging air, and grandma passed out on the floor.

"Grandma? Grandma!" I yelled as I tapped her shoulders to try to wake her up.

"Oh my god...you killed grandma!" Joseph said jokingly.

"Joseph! This is no time to be joking around!" I said.

I was so frustrated by all that has happened and if grandma got a heart attack from hearing what happened to me, I wouldn't have anyone else to turn to but Joseph. To my luck, grandma slowly woke up.

"Christina? Why would you joke around about something like that?" She said hesitantly.

"But I'm not joking around...it really happened."

I'm starting to think that she may have hit the ground too hard.

"No...John would never do that...never."

Then she stood up, turned around and walked to her room. But she kept saying "No...John would never do that...never."

I sat there...dumbfounded about that reaction.

"Why can't anyone help me!" I yelled as I ran up the stairs crying.

I threw myself onto the bed, threw my head down into the pillow and sobbed like a four year old who lost his favorite toy. Then I heard a knock on the door.

"Christina...it's Joseph...please let me in." He said while knocking on the door.

"No! I want to be alone!" I said between sobs.

Then he said something that I really needed to hear.

"You've been alone long enough, it's time that someone actually cares about you enough to make you feel better."

I realized that he was right, so I opened the door and hugged him right where he was standing. I closed the door behind me and I sat on the bed with him. He leaned over and held me in his arms, I couldn't believe that his arms would be so welcoming. I was so comfortable that I laid down on the bed and Joseph was still holding me as I fell asleep.

I don't know how long I was asleep, but something terrifying woke me up.

"AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!" I heard Grandma scream as if something came out of a horror movie.

At first I thought that she flipped the channel right into the middle of a horror movie commercial, but she kept screaming. We heard glass breaking and dishes breaking...then...dead silence.

We slowly walked to the end of the hallway and then grandma screamed again. We ran to the closet and grabbed some metal baseball bats. (grandma kept them as a souvenir when Joseph played little league) then we ran down the stairs to find a man dressed in black with a big pan in his hand.

I froze...I looked like a scared kid who played little league for the first time (*cough cough* Joseph...)

Grandma got up from the floor and yelled "Run Christina! run as far-"

before she could finish her sentence the guy dressed in black swung the pan against her head with a resounding blow. The blood stains on the back of the couch and on the floor were terrifying...there was blood everywhere. I couldn't bear to watch this horrible sight.
