Chapter two

It felt like a nightmare, but she knew it was far from that, and she resented it. She wished as hard as she could that it was not true, that it was not real, but it was all in vain. She knew it was there, and she knew that they would find a way into the loop soon, they were smarter than anyone gave them credit for, the wights would come again, and this time they would not lose. Deciding she could not sleep any longer, she got up and climbed up the small ladder to the top floor of the tower, where the balcony was. Miss Eagle had entrusted her with the top two floors of the tower room and she was entirely grateful for that. Leaning over the edge of the stone fence that stopped her from falling from the top floor of the house, she smiled as the wind whipped passed her face, tangling in her hair and making her feel a lot calmer. She let out a shaky breath and turned away from the wind, noticing the eagle that was sat watching her, the ymbrynes knew the same thing she did. But the wind was addicting, a sweet nicotine of cold sea air, that attacked her boy with all it's might, but it was her favourite thing, and she was its victim. It took all of her willpower, just to turn away from it again, and even more to allow her to climb back down the ladder.

The moment she arrived in her room, she noticed something, something that she could have sworn wasn't there before. A trapdoor lay in the centre of the room, she knew that it was not there before and it had been covered by something, but why was it uncovered now? Her hand hovered over the ring that would open it, she loved a mystery and she just wanted to know what was down there, but there was something telling her not to do it, so instead she turned and walked to the door, she needed to talk to Miss Eagle. But it still sat at the back of her mind, a mystery was waiting to be solved, and it had come to her, and she had to solve it, it was a must. If she didn't solve it, she surely would go mad, it would plague her, plague with the knowing of the secrets to be discovered, and that she wouldn't be able to know them.

No one else was awake, a thing Jeanette was used to, she woke up hours early then the others, she always had, and she had always thought that she always will, but that wasn't quite true anymore. She was nearly two hundred years old and still scared of the monsters, she was sick of it, but she couldn't help it, but she could fight the monsters. In eight years she would have lived through two centuries, but she resented that, she was too old to keep on hiding. And age changes people, she was reaching the point where she didn't give a damn anymore, she wanted to explore the world, and if that meant killing the things she couldn't see and was completely and utterly scared of, then so be it.

She reached the ground floor in a matter of minutes, she could hear voices from the conservatory, indicating that the ymbrynes were awake. She was, slightly relieved by this, as that meant she could talk about her fears with someone, but she was saddened that it had to be them, even though they were the only people who would understand. Reaching up and knocking on the door, she only had to wait a short time to get an answer.

"Come in." Miss Eagle called. Jeanette opened the door slowly, and entered the room nervously. The ymbrynes were sat on one of the sofas, talking and drinking tea, they were the image of one of the posh women stereotypes. "Ah, Jeanette, what can I do for you?"

"I think our loop's location is known by the wights." She said, trying to phrase her words in a way that would not make it seem as though she was crazy. Although, she had a sneaking suspicion that Miss Eagle already thought that.

"Yes, we have been fearing that as well, thank you for your concern Jeanette." Miss Eagle smiled at her, causing her to nod awkwardly, Miss Eagle always managed to scare the girl in some way, although the girl didn't always notice, as she mistook her own fear for anger.

"I- um you're welcome." She mumbled., her eyes trained on her bare feet.

"Would you like some breakfast?" Miss Peregrine asked, cutting through the awkward silence that had ensued after the short conversation. The girl just shook her head.

"No, no thank you. I think I'll go for a walk." She nodded and quickly left the room, exiting the house as fast as she could. She skipped down the worn stone steps that led up to the porch and wandered down the path, and towards the rotted old pier. She felt drawn there, and she wanted to know why.

Upon reaching the pier, Jeanette felt a chill wash over her, there was something wrong, the loop itself seemed to be telling her that. She sat down at the edge of the water, wincing as her feet came into contact with the freezing cold water. Staring out at the ominous horizon, it was a glint in the depths of the water that actually caught her eye. Leaning closer to the water, she saw a trapdoor, identical to the one in her room. Excitement rushed through her, a mystery was there, waiting to be solved, and she was in a position to solve it, and so she had to solve it. Without even contemplating the risks, she slid off the edge of the pier, into the cold waters, but she was so fuelled by adrenaline that she didn't feel the freezing waters, as she looked for the best place to dive.

She took a deep breath and dived, she was almost there, she almost touched the metal ring of the trapdoor, when she realised that the lack of oxygen was getting to her, that as well as the freezing temperature of the water. Her hands had begun to go numb and black spots were clouding her vision, her mouth opened and she attempted to breath, only to inhale water. She was going to die, again. It was as she was giving up that something strange happened, something wrapped around her waist and pulled her out of the water. She lay on the pier, coughing and spluttering. When she finally looked up, she was met with the disappointed glare of Ethan. He looked worried too, and could possibly have been crying, but it was hard to tell, as he was dripping wet from his dive into the freezing waters.

"Are you trying to get yourself killed!" He shrieked at her, she shrugged, causing him to shake his head at her. "Jenny I'm serious! You aren't a strong swimmer, you scared me to death!" He enveloped her in a hug and then looked at her again.

"Do not give me that look Ethan, I'm not stupid." Jeanette argued angrily, Ethan laughed and shook his head, slinging an arm around her shoulders.

"You're serious about this aren't you? Do you really want to go down there?" he asked her, she nodded.

"It is the exact replica of the trapdoor in my room Ethan, I need to know what's down there. It may even provide the answers we've been searching for." She told him, he sighed but nodded.

"Did it not occur to you that we could just go through the one in your room?" Ethan asked, she shook her head.

"Not at the time, besides it is a bit late for that now." She pointed out. He nodded once more.

"Alright then, but I want you to promise to stay close to me. I don't know what we'll find down there, but I don't want to lose you." He said, she grinned.

"Ethan, you do worry too much, but if it makes you feel better, then I will not stray from your side." She promised, he smiled softly back at her.

"Thanks Jenny, shall we go?" He asked, holding out his hand, she took it with a nod.

"We shall." She agreed, before the two plummeted into the cool waters below the pier.

Keeping her tight hold on Ethan's hand, Jeanette dived towards the trapdoor and grabbed the metal ring in her free hand, with his help, she managed to open it and fall into the hole, where the door slammed shut behind them. They stood together in pitch blackness, the only reminder that they were not alone, was the fact that they had remained hand in hand.

"Jenny, do you know a way we would be able to see?" Ethan questioned her, she nodded, and upon remembering he could not see her, she spoke.

"There is something I can try." She told him.

"Do it." He agreed, she chuckled lightly and closed her eyes, focusing upon what she wanted to do. A small, pink ball of light appeared. Floating in the air, it wasn't the brightest light, but it would do.

"How is that?" She questioned, admiring it curiously. He laughed.

"amazing as always." Ethan commented, smiling a her and gesturing to the long corridor that lay in front of them. "Shall we?"

Jeanette just nodded, she was eager to explore, but she knew she had to honour her promise and stay close to Ethan. It was sometimes nice to explore at a slower pace anyway.

Ethan suddenly stopped and stared at the wall, which caused the girl stood beside him to frown. "Ethan?" She asked, a worried tone in her voice.

"Jenny, look at this." He pointed to the wall, she frowned at it.

"What?" She asked impatiently.

"Scratch marks, there are scratch marks on the wall." He answered, she reached out a pale, shaking hand and touched the marks on the wall.

"What is down here Ethan?" she asked him. "What could have done this?"

"I don't know; do you- do you want to continue?" He asked, hoping she'd decide to turn back, but she nodded.

"We can't give up now." She stated. He nodded.

"Okay, let's carry on then." He sighed. She smiled at him, and squeezed his hand comfortingly.

They carried on walking, seeing no other sign that there had been anything at all, until they heard a sound from around the corner. it sounded like chains moving, a strange noise for an underground tunnel. Ethan and Jeanette exchanged confused looks.

"Ethan, what do you suppose is there?" Jeanette hung back, fear in her brown eyes, she stared at him, uncertainty hung in the air, asking questions that she could not, he knew what she feared of seeing, for he too feared it.

"It won't be anything like that Jenny, I know it." He said, smiling at her in reassurance, but it was hard to convince someone it would be fine, if you yourself thought the same way.

"Ethan, what if it is? I can't go back there, Ethan!" Jeanette was panicking, he knew the thoughts that ran through her head, he just needed to keep his best friend calm. He pulled her towards him and wrapped his arms around her tightly, waiting until she was relaxed and her muscles less tense before he even considered letting go of her. She looked at him and touched his cheek, a gesture the two used to use when thanking each other for one another's existence. He smiled a small, sad smile back, and returned the gesture.

"It'll be okay, we'll be okay, just trust me." He told her, she nodded her head, her tired eyes were illuminated in the dim light, making her look ever more tired. She trusted him, she trusted him with her life, her heart, her soul, and he trusted her with the same, maybe even more. She put her hand in his again, it fit perfectly. Always had, always will.

"shall we go then?" she tried to keep her voice uplifted, but it held all that he was thinking in the strained, false, happiness, what if it was down there? What if she returned? Neither dared think it, but that didn't stop them from thinking about it anyway, it was a worry the two shared, it was a fate they had been running from for so long, but now it seemed to be catching up with them, they could not let that happen, they could not let that happen. To even think about it happening... they would be dead before they had chance to breath. However, if they looked, they would be in with a chance at surviving. Because that is what they specialised in, surviving. Ethan looked at Jeanette, his eyes staring straight into hers. Slowly, he nodded and after a moment, he did too.

"Let's go." He said, taking a deep breath and walking down the corridor, the girl by his side. When they rounded the corner, they weren't entirely sure what to expect, but what they found was definitely not what either of them would have guessed. It was extenuated by Jeanette's half happy, half scared scream.

"Ethan!" Her voice seemed to disappear in the strange mix of emotions that hung in the air. She was crying, and he had to take a step back just to assess the situation.

"Oh god!"
