Chapter ten
No one said a word, no one dared to say a word. Until one of the little ones started screaming in fright.
And more screams ensued, until everyone was a mess of screams and sobs.
Jeanette stood with Enoch, Josef and Horace, watching the chaos sombrely.
"Well this is definitely going to help us get our ymbrynes back." Enoch said. Jeanette nodded, she liked this new side of him, but now wasn't really the time to comment on it. She was seeing the side of Enoch Miss Peregrine's children knew well, and unlike most of them, she liked it.
"Perhaps we should do something?" She suggested.
"I think Emma and Jacob have that covered." Josef answered, pointing to the two, who had climbed up onto a large crate and looked like they were about to say something. They didn't say anything for a few minutes, until Emma whistled for quiet.
Everyone stared at her expectantly, Bronwyn comforting the little ones who were crying, Melanie holding Nathan tightly, as he shivered violently. The effects of what Ethan had done showed in everyone's face. No one really wanted to believe it. But it was true and it hurt Jeanette like a slap in the face.
They had all been betrayed, betrayed by someone they had trusted, and for Miss Eagle's peculiars, betrayed by a family member. Heartbreak sat in their emotions and it took a moment for Emma to speak, as she was shocked by the expressions on her fellow peculiars.
"Crying and screaming is not going to solve this. We need to keep it together. Or we'll never get Miss P or Miss Eagle back." Emma said. No one said anything for a while.
"And how exactly do we do that? Just trusting Jacob's 'peculiarity' is not enough. Last time he led a Wight to us! And this time, this time it's worse. This time the wights are a part of the past." Enoch announced grandly. Jeanette nodded.
"As badly as Enoch put that, he is indeed right." She cut in before Emma could answer back to Enoch's comment. "We need a plan, we need a strategy. Cameron, Nathan and I have come up against these wights before, they know peculiars better then most. One used to be an ymbryne."
"You're right, we all need to work together. I can't do this alone, I don't know my peculiarity that well. As well as we can fight, as a group we will be better." Jacob said.
"We have to get our ymbrynes back, we'll make a plan and then go tell those wights who's boss!" Emma announced. Everyone cheered.
"Emma! We need your help!" Cameron yelled, he had taken his cousin from Melanie and was cradling him in his arms. Nathan was unconscious, his lips blue and he shivered violently. Emma came running and gasped when she saw the boy.
She warmed her hands and placed them on the boy's arms. Colour started to return to his face, his lips changed from pale blue to a pale pink, he eyes opened and he looked around in confusion.
"Nathan?" Cameron asked his cousin worriedly. Nathan looked at him.
"Cam? Where's Ethan?" He asked.
"He's gone Nate." Cameron answered.
"What do you mean?" Nathan asked. "Jenny! Where's my brother?"
Jeanette ran over to the young boy at once, taking his hands in hers, Emma was holding the boy's shoulders as she warmed his frozen body.
"I'm sorry little one, he went with the wights. They took the ymbrynes." She told him. Nathan frowned.
"He did this?" He asked, meaning his frozen body.
"Yes. I don't believe he meant to, but he did." She said.
Emma finished expelling the frost from his bones and stood up. "You should be alright now. But take it easy." She told him. Nathan smiled at her and gave her an unexpected hug.
"Thanks for saving me Emma!" He said. She smiled at him.
"It's no problem." She answered, before leaving the group with Jacob, seeming to need to talk to him. Nathan then hugged Melanie and Bronwyn, thanking them for saving him. He may look like a thirteen year old with a never ending glare, of which he couldn't help as it was his resting face, but Nathan had a heart of gold.
"Why did he do that to us?" Nathan asked, as he hugged Jeanette, deciding that she needed a hug, of which she did.
"I don't know Nathan, but we have lost another family member." She told him, reaching for Cameron and getting him to join the hug.
"It's only us three left, only we know the truth of what happened there." Cameron said.
"We have to stop this." Nathan mumbled.
"We will." Jeanette let go of the two boys, finishing the group hug. Melanie wrapped a few blankets around Nathan who grinned and thanked her.
"Thanks Mel." Jeanette said to the winged girl, who smiled and nodded.
"I didn't do much, just what I could." Melanie shrugged.
"But what you can do is helpful and possibly lifesaving." Jeanette smiled, before walking over to Enoch, who had called her to join him. Melanie smiled back and then went to help Bronwyn with the little ones, before going to find her own friends.
"Emma and Jacob are drafting a plan, they want you, Leo and Stephan to check it over afterwards." Enoch told her as she approached him.
"Thank you Enoch." She smiled at him sorrowfully.
"Do you want to go back to our workshop?" He asked. She nodded, but her eyes were fixed on Leo, who stood on the deck, staring at the water with anger in his eyes.
"I'll meet you there, I must speak with Leo." She said. He nodded and walked away, leaving her to slowly approach one of her best friends.
"Are you okay Jenny?" He asked her. She nodded slowly. She needed him as much he needed her in that moment.
"I keep wondering, have we failed him in some way? Was it us who made him turn on everyone?" She asked, Leo knew by 'we' she meant herself, but couldn't bring herself to say it.
"No, I don't think it was something we did, but you have to talk to Cameron, it could have been something that happened long ago, or when you were in the tunnels." Leo told her. She smiled softly and nodded.
"I will talk to him later. But, how are you?" She asked him. He shrugged.
"I'm fine. It's not like I liked him anyway." Leo told her. She laughed and reached up and wrapped her arm around his shoulder.
"Oh Leo." She chuckled, before her expression turned serious and she reached up to whisper something in his ear. "I know."
He went red, but then hid it with a look of disgust. "Go on, I'm sure Enoch is waiting for you." He told her. She laughed and skipped to the door.
When she was gone, he let out a sigh of relief.

As she walked below deck, Jeanette seemed to pass everyone at some point in her journey. She met Emma and Jacob by the door, Millard questioned her about Ethan, and when she was about to walk into their workshop, she witnessed Aimee ranting to Stephan about how she would never get over having hollowgast guts splattered all over her. After that, she heard a strange noise and saw Fiona and Hugh kissing in a corner.
She let out a sigh of relief when she finally reached the workshop, causing Enoch to laugh and look up from the rat trap he was making.
"What?" He asked her, as she sat down opposite him.
"I have met too many people in just the one corridor." She answered sadly, "it was most disconcerting."
"It sounds it." He agreed, but she wasn't too sure if he was poking fun at her or not.
"It seems that in a sense, Ethan was right, we are without ymbrynes, and we're peculiars out on our own. Is that not strange?" She asked him, beginning to work on another figure.
"Depends on whether you believe in fate, or coincidence." Enoch muttered. She stared at him for a moment, before nodding.
"I suppose so."
