Chapter Five
Piper's POV
The lake and creek were frozen limiting the water supply even more. What was worse was that the campers were no longer brushing the situation aside as side effects from temperamental Gods. Everyone was now on edge, whispers shot around the camp, everyone was guessing what the problem was. Or at least what could be causing it. Piper had pulled Annabeth aside trying to pick her friend's brain but Annabeth only had bits and pieces of speculation like everyone else. Whatever it was, the problem wasn't going away, it was getting worse. Percy and Leo switched on and off constantly throughout the day trying to thaw the ice so the camp could function on some level of normality. Needless to say tempers were flaring.
Thalia and Jason had shut themselves up in their cabin and when Piper walked by she often heard angry grumbling and even yelling. She wanted to help but knew at this point there wasn't much she could do. She recognized that the two Grace siblings were trying to minimize the chances of people getting in the crossfire of their bad moods. However they weren't the only ones upset by this new cold development. Annabeth was having to deal with a cranky Percy, and Calypso a cranky Leo. Luckily for Piper Nico and Will had kept level heads through the whole mess.
Now she was sitting on the edge of the dock watching Percy melt the ice only for it to solidify yet again. The sound of feet smacking wood came from behind her and soon a gleaming head of blond hair hurtled past. It was Will jumping down onto the ice.
"What're you up to?" Piper asked raising a curious eyebrow. Will smiled twirling on the ice perfectly. He was wearing a wierd looking pair of shoes.
"I figured I could help. Some of my siblings and I might be able to bend the sunlight a little. And with the help of some friends in the Hepheastus cabin, they made some ice skating sneakers." Will wiggled his foot proudly. Again the sound of feet pounding wood thundered behind Piper. Sure enough five more Apollo campers were now on the ice. With Will's instructions they busied themselves with twirling around on the glossy lake and aiding Percy's futile struggle.
"There is no way we're going to be able to keep this up." Piper grumbled getting to her feet and striding in the direction of the Athena cabin. She knocked on the door before pushing it cautiously open. "Annabeth?"
"Percy if you're here to whine-" Annabeth started with a voice that would under normal circumstances be used to chide a five year old. Annabeth rounded the corner before giving a relieved sigh when she spotted Piper. "Thank the Gods."
"Let me guess, he's begging you to figure out a solution already?" Piper smirked. Annabeth sighed sinking into the mattress of her empty bunk.
"Yeah, but I can't blame him. I've spent the last few hours trying to come up with some sort of solution but I only have bits and pieces. Besides if it's Zeus, Poseidon, or maybe both, that's having a fit there isn't much we can do about it." Annabeth shook her head, her shoulders slumping.
"I know that Thalia said it had something to do with Zeus, but I can't help but think it's something else too." Piper explained sitting next to Annabeth. "Sure it hasn't snowed or anything and there was that really wierd thunderstorm, but Zeus wouldn't be freezing our water supply. That's not really his thing."
"I had a similar theory but Poseidon wouldn't intentionally do this, but it wouldn't be the first time a God has done something accidental based on their emotions." Annabeth noted. There was a moment of silence as the two girls ran out of ideas.
"Do you think we could go to Olympus? Maybe tell them what's happening?" Piper asked breaking the quiet. Annabeth shook her head in dismay.
"I'm not trying to be a Debby downer but even if we could they wouldn't let us in if they were having problems. Every time in the past, when something wrong happens on Olympus, it's pretty much shut down. Nobody gets in." Piper understood, if anybody knew that bit of information it would be Annabeth. Annabeth or at least Percy, seeing as how the two had gone on what seemed dozens of quests before.
"Who knows maybe it's just a fluke. We're the only ones experiencing this right?" Piper questioned though she knew she might as well be trying to grab thin air.
"As far as I know. Reyna and I did have brief discussion but details weren't discussed." Piper nodded getting to her feet. "Look Piper, whatever the problem is we'll figure it out. We always do, but what I'm worried about is whether it'll be in a good way or..."
Piper didn't need Annabeth to finish her sentence. Either the camp would find out what was causing the strange winter by a simple sign, or something worse was going to happen. From experience it was almost always worse and that's what had everyone on edge. What Piper kept wondering was what the cost would be when they finally figured it out.
Leaving Annabeth to stress over her thoughts Piper made her way to Jason's cabin. Again as she passed she could hear angry yelling only it was worse this time. Concerned she practically kicked down the door. Upon entering a shoe came flying at her. If Piper hadn't ducked it would have smacked her in the head. Straightening Piper took in the scene around her. Objects littered the ground and the once tidy cabin was now almost a complete mess. In the middle of it all Thalia and Jason were wrestling on the floor. Jason had her in a head lock but Thalia had him pinned to the ground at an awkward angle. For Piper this was one of the strangest sights she had ever seen.
Walking over Piper struggled to peel them apart. When she did Jason's red face went back to its normal color. "What happened?"
"She wouldn't stay on her side of the cabin." Jason glared angrily at his sister.
"I was trying to go to the door." Thalia snapped.
"Well it's on my side." Jason argued.
"You can't pick sides like that! It's like me saying the floor is mine and the ceiling is yours!" Thalia fumed. Piper was completely dumfounded. She had watched TV shows when she was younger when these situations happened. She had always dubbed them stupid, and thought that it never actually happened in real life. Apparently it did, even with demigod's.
"Jason you can't have control over the door." Jason scoffed. Piper who was normally patient wanted to smack her boyfriend upside the head. He was starting to really get on her nerves acting like a three year old. "And Thalia you can't cross onto Jason's side."
Piper was completely out of her element. She felt like a mom mediating a fight. With both siblings unsatisfied and grumbling Piper left the cabin shaking her head all the while. Please Zeus, if you don't want me to go crazy, fix the weather! Piper pleaded. As she made her way towards her cabin a chill passed through her. It was brief but cold. Goosebumps rose up on her skin as she entered her cabin to escape the madness. As the door was about to shut a breeze ruffled her hair and another chill passed through her.
